I am from New Zealand and fish and dive a fair bit. I love eating seafood and it’s hard to impress me.
Well Toyo Sushi wowed me. I’ll work my way up. The location is far from the charm of Gion and the interior is modest. In saying that it is very clean and the nice timber had a homely feel to it. The beer was very fresh and saki quality. The bream, sushi and eggplant dishes were really good. The tuna was excellent and from a cut near the belly.
I cannot remember having better sashimi salmon and fresh water eel, both sensational. However what me go back for more sashimi (despite being full) was the Hokkaido shrimp sashimi. These little guys were incredibly tasty.
The husband and wife that run the place are super friendly and obviously very proud of what they serve. I have no doubt they choose the best seafood they can find and handle it expectedly so it lands on your plate as fresh as possible.
If you appreciate good seafood, then you really must come to Toyo as you will not get this quality back home. Not to mention, you can gorge yourself because the prices are far too low.
Just don’t take our seat tomorrow night as we...
Read moreHidden gem! Little sushi restaurant in some residential area. It seems to run by a couple with the husband handles most the fish (the sushi chef) and the wife helps with everything else. They automatically gave me an English menu and I ordered seafood bowl (1600 yen). The hot green tea come soon after I made the ordered, and later was switched to another hot one (I didn't finish it yet). The order also came with a miso soup; it's hot and delicious. I enjoyed all the pieces in my seafood. I couldn't be happier. Very glad to give it a try, even though there was only a few hundred of Google reviews when I visited, instead of going to other noodle shops that had thousands of reviews. There were many westerners, surprisely, given the restaurant is bit father away from other local attractions. Wondering it was ranked higher in some European review site. If I came in the area back again, will definitely stopped by. BTW, they close on Thursday and Fridays every other week. So watch out if you plan to visit them...
Read moreWow! What should I say, I love Sushi and I am from Austria (no sea:) but this sushi here was the best price/value sushi I ever had in my life! The owner (and his wife I guess) are very friendly and are running the place since 1979 as he told me if I remember correctly. I first started with the simple sashimi plate. That was good but not outstanding but then I ordered the Tuna belly and the see eel and that was when I felt in Love (besides the scallops)! Tuna belly, see eel and see urchin are generally the best of the best but this one was outstanding. Then I also ordered nata maki and plum maki besides another see eel and pickled Makrele. The makrele was the cheapest of all sushi and indeed not the best. The nata was also not my test. But again considering the price and the quality it is a "must visit" especially when you are visiting the temple nearby anyways Whenever I am back in Kyoto I will go there again no matter what! Thank you very much you...
