A capsule hotel is just a hostel. I like a good hostel and I love a Japanese public bath, so picked this place.
Overall experience was good and I would stay again, but I wasn't bowled over so it's a solid 4 stars.
The good:
The location is both quiet and convenient. There are few hotels around Shibuya and they are bad value, so I'd much rather stay at Nadeshiko that at a much pricier depressing business hotel.
THE BATH! Read up on Japanese baths if you don't know what to expect, but I think it's such a nice and relaxing experience and definitely beats the absolutely tiny shower you'd get at one of the cheaper hotels. Hard to beat a hot bath after walking around all day.
Temperature and humidity in the dorm were perfect and there was plenty of room for suitcases.
There is a convenience store 1 minute away and a launderette on the ground floor.
There are useful amenities like yukata bathrobes, good hairdryers, curling irons, skincare sets, plentiful towels, toothbrush kits etc.
The guests were a quiet, friendly and respectful crowd.
The not so good:
The building is a bit more tired than it looks online and the corridors/landings are effectively outside, as is common in older Japanese buildings. That said, it is clean and functional.
The reception is only staffed between 16:00 and 22:00, so if you want to store your luggage before then (or if there's any issue with your key card etc.), you need to get hold of them on the phone. What they don't realise is that tourists all have data only SIMs (I'm not even sure you can buy a tourist SIM with voice calls). This is a big oversight on their part and creates many issues. I've helped several people get in and call the hotel. Be ready to MacGyver something with a VoIP service.
The bath and "getting ready" area with vanities and sinks is closed for cleaning after 10 and until late afternoon. That seems excessive.
Bedding could be better but it didn't bother me.
The launderette doesn't sell laundry detergent (but you can buy a small pack from the...
Read moreit's my first time staying at a capsule hotel as a solo traveller and I most certainly will do it again! It really rare and such a treat to have a hotel designed exactly for a solo female traveller and Nadeshiko went above and beyond to make this happen. I stayed in room 305, which is the top bunk in a 6 person room. The guests are all very polite, quiet and respects each other's privacy despite shared bathrooms and thin capsule walls.. basically everything but your room! The idea of letting you choose your yakuta and bag (which you can take away) is the perfect touch of girly without being too girly. The capsule rooms are quite big, and I can almost stretch my arms straight across the width. Yes the bed is a little hard, yes you can hear people snapping photos inside their capsule, and yes other guests' alarms will wake you up in the morning (I definitely got a 5am riser....), but for a capsule hotel the comfort they give you and the types of guests they attract, more than makes up for it.||||One thing I MUST review is the bathhouse. MY GOD was it amazing! The fact that they have dedicated a large space for just a bathhouse and communal relaxation area is just phenominal and the perfect end to a long cold day of shopping ;). I did my fair share of soaking in the cast iron soaking tub, and wooden bathtub, and zoned out to the soft, calming music. most of the time, i was alone in the bathhouse which was great. ||||All in all. top marks and will totally...
