This is a quiet little ryokan well away from the hubbub of the main tourist center in Yufuin. We were offered free pickup service from either the station or the bus center (as well as drop-off service after checkout), which was definitely necessary with luggage.
The ryokan is definitely on the quiet side. While I went on a weekday, I did hear one family on their way to and from the baths, but otherwise, there was barely any noise.
Perhaps because of the barely-moving little stream right outside my room, there were mosquitoes buzzing around in the middle of November. The staff provided me with bug spray, but I still woke up to a bloody mosquito carcass on my pillow the next morning...
The family bath, particularly the one outside, was very, VERY hot, temperature-wise. It hurt just to my put my feet in - I would definitely not allow a small child nor an elderly person to use it at the normal temperature. There are no hot/cold valves for customers to adjust the temperature themselves, which is a big downside of this ryokan in my opinion, particularly when they set the temperature so high to begin with. (I found a slightly hidden cold water valve and used that to cool the boiling soup down.)
The men's/women's baths seem to be of a more normal temperature, but still a bit on the warmer side than some other places...
Read moreAwesome ryokan with great service! As many other reviewers had mentioned, the location isn't that near the main street, but that's exactly the beauty of the place! It's nevertheless just a very short walking distance (~10 mins) to the main street. Free car parking onsite (big empty space next the ryokan entrance).
We booked the room with the private onsen, and the room space was huge. There were both the Japanese traditional room and western style room with two single beds, so definitely more than enough space for bigger group if needed.
Breakfast was awesome. You get to choose to have the breakfast at either 8am, 8:30am or 9am. We didn't get the dinner package. You are allowed to buy and bring food/dinner back to the ryokan and have them in the dining area.
There were two main staffs attending to the guests and a number of staffs in the kitchen. All of them were very nice.
Really enjoyed my stay. Highly recommend to those intending a ryokan/onsen...
Read moreI went to Yufuin during the 1st weekend of Dec and booked a stay with Hananomai as I wanted to have a private onsen bath. Hananomai is about 10-15 mins walk from Yufuin station and slightly away from the crowded street. It was a beautiful traditional looking ryokan with very friendly and attentive staff.||||On our check-out day, we still had a couple of hours before our scheduled train so we went to Yunotsubo Kaido Shopping Street to kill time and left our luggage with them. Went back to collect our luggage and was dreading the fact that we need to drag our luggage to the train station under the drizzling rain. To our surprise, the staff volunteered to drive us to the station without our asking. That was really a BIG plus point.||||If given the chance to go back to Yufuin, we will definitely choose to stay with Hananomai again. Thumbs up to...
