Marvin Suites is a small family run hotel that is conveniently located in walking distance between the Ferry pier/marina to the south and the beach to the north. This is a very quiet location on a sandy cross street with individually designed rooms on two levels. The streets are sand, transportation is generally by foot, golf cart or scooter, the infrastructure is slowly developing and luxury amenities do not fit the ambiance of this small fishing island. Once we had taken the opportunity to look around, ate at some of the excellent restaurants, and got to know Marvin, we did not want to leave. Our room was spacious, with basic amenities including a small bar fridge, spacious balcony overlooking the street, and flat screen TV. Some of the suites have kitchen facilities as well. Local items have teen incorporated into the decor. Television reception was quite limited, however we did not go to a remote rustic island to watch TV. There is a common sitting/dining area on the upper level which became a central meeting place where we made new and lasting friendships and was the best location to get a somewhat reliable wifi signal. Bottled water was provided and a few glasses and dishes were available to for guest use. A central coffee urn was always on with the brew "strengthening" over time. There is a small central courtyard with hammocks, table and wood burning BBQ on the main level, where Marvin would connect with guest and share his extensive knowledge of the island. The mid day gatherings were a memorable highlight for us. Marvin took my husband and others fishing and then returned to prepare the catch for all to enjoy. Personal assistance was provided by Marvin and his staff to guests for booking transportation, or securing funds when the local band ATMs would not work. Holbox has a very small local population of around 2000 residents and is rapidly growing now that it has been discovered by tourism. It definitely enhanced our experience to have access to our local host's wisdom and insights. It you are looking to be pampered on a five star beach vacation, then do not choose Isla Holbox for your vacation experience. If you are looking for a more authentic visit, then I would highly recommend Marvin Suites. You would be in very good hands with a friendly and...
Read moreIf I could give this place a 10/5 I would. Hands down the best place on the island to stay. Marvin, his wife and his staff are the most friendly, accommodating people you will meet. You know why? Because it's family owned and they genuinely care. The rooms are large, clean and basic, plus it's set back in the town a bit so it's very quiet. But still, it's only an 8 minute walk to the main square/beach. What more do you need?
Well, if you do need more, Marvin frequently puts on afternoon seafood grills and doesn't ask anything from anyone other than picking up a few ingredients and pitching in some help. My wife, three month old and myself stayed with Marvin for 20 days and we took part in 6 of his afternoon feasts and they are easily better than any of the meals we had eating out. I'm talking, not even close.
If you need even more incentive, the place is small enough that you really get to know everyone who is staying there. We met a bunch of great people our 20 days there and I can pretty much bet that that would not have happened if we stayed in some generic hotel where everyone keeps to themselves.
Last piece of advise: when booking try to get yourself into room "Sur". It's probably the best room in the place.
Can't say enough good things about Marvin. Do yourself a favour, climb over Trumps dumbass wall and book yourself into Marvin Suites, and if you're American, don't...
Read moreThe host Jessica made you feel at home right from the beginning. She is friendly, serviceminded and always ready to advice and recommend places to go that at least for us were very good. She pointet out places that we would never had found our selves. ||The rooms are very clean, big and spacious with kitchenette and aircon. No mosquitos :-). There is no view from the room which is also reflected in the price. The seven rooms surrounds a small cozy yard with an outdoor kitchen where there on request may be arranged common dinners. ||Everything is in walking distance but yet the place is quiet. ||The place offers laundry service from day to day at a very reasonable price ||||We can warmly recommend this place for future guest that do not neccesarily search for a seawiev and direct access to the sea.||||Thanks Jessica. You are a pearl and we will recommend you to our friends and come back||||Best||Jørgen...
