First the attributes. The people working at Casa del Sontano, on the front desk and the small cafe on the terrace in particular, were very helpful and kind. They made our stay as pleasant as possible and exuded the hospitable charm of Oaxaca. This hotel is very close to the main attractions, including Templo de Santo Domingo, with a beautiful view from the roof that comes at an affordable price. Although we did not have a chance to use the jacuzzi, we loved the view, especially at sunrise. One other benefit, out of the four places we stayed in Oaxaca they had the best and most consistent WiFi, so digital nomads may enjoy working at the terrace restaurant.||However, the hotel reminded me of the comparisons between Instagram photos vs reality. The reviews of other guests seem that they stayed at another location. The large property may have been luxurious at one time, but our two rooms were small and dark, with a damp odor. The doors were awkward, with the small entrances split in half requiring you to go inside sideways. It would also be difficult for a person with mobility issues to navigate all the stairs, but the city would be challenging on its own. While I cannot recommend staying here, we did find a way to make do and were greatly assisted...
Read moreFirst, they are review stuffing with several 10/10 with no detail. In no sense is this property worth 10/10.||Pros:|The location is convenient if you like to walk and the staff is friendly to a person and mostly competent. The cafe is adequate for breakfast and so/so for lunch - open until 4:45.||Cons:|The "family double" is microscopic. There might be 50 square feet of unoccupied floor space. The photos are misleading. No iron or ironing board.|The lack of hot water and water pressure are true. At best the water was warm enough to not get a chill.|This former monastery is tile everywhere and transmits sound like crazy! Early to bed? Forget it, you will hear every voice and footstep in the hall. Bathrooms share a common vent chase so every bathroom sound transmits to all floors.|The beds are hard as a rock. I like firm, but this was other level hard.|The "bar" appears to have been closed for a long time.|Several common maintenance items appear to be neglected.||Summary: This feels like a property on the way down. If you spend another 10% I'm guessing you will upgrade in comfort and quality by well more than 10%. The staff is an 8 but everything...
Read moreThis hotel was close to most downtown attractions, but far enough to be relatively quiet.||||I liked the rooms (named after saints) and the vibe.||||One day waiting for a tour pickup had breakfast and although simple it was good. They have four sets that include coffee/tea/juice and eggs or enfrijoladas + beverages, etc.|| ||The temazcal (aromatic sauna shaped liked an igloo) was relaxing, especially after drinking the tea. They can have it ready same day before 6:00 PM, but you have to let them know at least one hour ahead. ||||My only problem was that after 8:30 AM and until past 10:00 PM the internet slowed down to the point where WhatsApp calls didn’t go through. I had a conversation about this with the staff members, but apparently it was out of their control; it seemed that as more hotel guests started using the internet the quality got worse.||||Even with the Wi-Fi degradation issue I would still...
