The Edgerley Suites — Hotel in Albert-Eden

The Edgerley Suites was literally my 'home away from home' for several months this year, and I loved it. I stayed full-time long-term for more than 5 months, and then was a part-time casual guest for about two months after that, as I went through a bit of a life transition.

I did my research before I first checked in back in March, and looked at all the other comparable serviced apartment options in the Epsom / Newmarket area, and The Edgerley Suites was by far the best option. The location is excellent - walking distance to everything Broadway / Newmarket has to offer, including the massive Westfield Mall (biggest in NZ?) which has everything you could possibly need, and open late - not to mention many restaurant options in its famous "rooftop dining" space even after the shops are closed. And there's even a Post Office just at the end of the road - a rare thing these days, not to mention a dry cleaners and pretty much everything. Plus it's right between the motorway on- and off-ramps for very easy access to the motorways in all directions.

For me, the convenience of just being able to walk in with a suitcase of clothes and everything was there ready to go was exactly what I needed. All units are fully furnished and equipped (including full size fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, hair drier, iron and ironing board, cutlery and crockery and most of the cookware you'll need, etc.). Far better than a hotel and way cheaper (especially for long-term stays where the price gets cheaper).

I'm surprised at the reviews suggesting it's overpriced - I found it was good value for what you get, compared to the other options in the area. I'm also surprised at the reviews that question the cleanliness - that wasn't my experience at all, and I stayed in several different apartments (or "rooms") during my 7 months - one for the long-term stay but several others for the shorter stints. The cleaners will come every day if you want, like a hotel, and I found they generally did a good job. The bedding and towels were always fresh and clean (and smelling slightly of bleach so you know they've been cleaned well), and they make the beds to a top hotel standard. In 7 months I never really had cause to complain, but if ever I found something that needed attention - the excellent, and friendly staff, always attended to it right away, I never had to ask twice.

The front desk / reception team were lovely, and very accommodating. And as others have said the building itself and facilities are good - sure there's no pool or gym etc. (if there were the prices would be higher), but the secure parking was great, and there are two lifts not one like some places, I never saw them out of action, and the building is only about 7 years old so up to all the current standards and regulations.

Yes, in one apartment there was an issue with the pressure regulator on the hot water cylinder (common in apartments), so they put me in another room while that was fixed, then next time I went into that room sure enough it was fixed.

I know they get a lot of regular and repeat guests (and I wasn't the only long-term guest while I was there), so it can't be as bad as some reviews suggest? I would happily stay there again if the need arose - and have referred colleagues and clients to them.

I suggest if put off by some of the negative reviews (remember, there's a lot of competition in the area, are all those reviews legitimate?), then contact them for an "inspection" of a couple of rooms before committing, they're happy to do that. If coming from out of town, I'm sure they'd arrange a "video walk around" to see almost as good as in person. Yes some rooms have a better outlook than others - like nice quiet serene bush, or north facing for the sun but looking towards the mall and motorway flyover - but just tell them your preference and they'll try to accommodate. (the motorway was never a problem, can't hear it thru the double glazing).

I was happy there for several months - so I can't see how anybody wouldn't be for just a week...

We spent 2 nights in room 405, a standard 2 bedroom suite. The hotel website claims it provides 'a homelike living environment (a home away from home)'. Well it definitely is not like home. The bed was so hard the 2 adults ended up with painful hips and back resulting in a very unsettled night. Research shows that very few people could tolerate sleeping comfortably on a 10/10 ultra firm bed so why does a 4 star hotel provide this level of firmness. Other guests have commented on the hard beds and yet the hotel has seemingly chosen to ignore these. Solution? Management purchase inner sprung mattresses and base and ditch the slat mattresses and slat beds in this hotel .||The second thing is the badly stained carpet. The stains look as though they've been there for a very long time in spite of management claiming they have been professionally cleaned.||The kitchen facilities were clean and modern with an under-bench oven, full sized fridge and the usual toaster, electric jug and microwave. and the bonus was a dishwasher with tablets. There was a limited number of cutlery and dinnerware.|I'm not sure why a dish cloth wasn't provided to wipe benches, nor oven proof dishes for the oven.||On the plus side the suite is spacious, clean (other than the carpet), comfortable and warm and the secure car park is great. Newmarket is a short walk away.||Finally I would not stay at this hotel again nor recommend it as a 4 star hotel...

Room service was pathetic. Cleaners didnt even bother to vacuum ,wipe any surface. Crumbs of food on the floor, any other pieces of tissues left lying on the floor, tables were not touched. Even the vanity water spots on the mirror was still there for the 3days I was there. Bed was hurriedly made, linen not changed at all. Empty Tubes of shampoo n stuff was not picked. We did our own dishes but the dishwasher wasn't emptied. I tried to keep my room clean, wiped the kitchen sink n bench myself. Not impressed at all. Bathroom was not even cleaned in the 3 days. My list can go on. The hotel looks great. The rooms are so spacious and bedroom nice. 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms..great! Parking good. If the cleaning team could at least off the lights . Hotel needs some parking in front, outside the basement so visitors can park when checking in before they are given access to the locked parking. We had another vehicle rammed into ours damaging our vehicle when we were checking in. If you can get a room with a view will be great but back view is not good. Too bushy. Gardens are great. Kitchen is nice. amenities good but needs replenishing well. The cleaners didn't even line the bathroom rubbish bin, instead left the liner in the vanity...
