Assigned an upstairs room above the laundry room in the back of the compound. After pulling luggage over unpaved path, climbing squeaky stairs, using a room key to open the lock of a squeaky door, we walked into a room with a double bed, surrounded by spartan furnishings (wobbly table, TV that is slow to respond though visually a nice flat screen), squeaky floor boards, a mediocre fan and opened windows without screens. Returned to room after it turned dark and groped our way up the stairs. By this time, the image of Bates Motel came to mind. Opened the door which required a hard push and tried to go to bed early since we had a 7 am tour the next day. Realized that I had mosquito bites from the opened window in the bathroom; tried to shut it but was unable to due to the lack of lever on the window pane. Fortunately. my husband brought his pocket tools and shut the window. Anticipating mosquitoes homing in towards me, I slept restlessly and also due to the insecurity we felt for our room which was approachable by another set of stairs from the veranda side. Retruning to our room the next day after our tour, the room looked serviced and in addition, some kind of brush with hair in the bristles (was it used for the toilet or the cups?) was left out. The bathroom window was left half open again. Besides mosquitoes, new visitors were on the wall- ants and with light, also spider web on the wall. Repeated the ordeal of closing the bathroom window. We were thankful that this was going to be...

On arrival, we were told that there was no booking - untrue, it was booked via booking[dot]com. Much confusion and lack of interest shown by staff at desk who kept answering the phone to take futher bookings throughout. When they finally realised we did have a booking, no apologies for the delay were offered.
Upfront payment meant we had no idea what we were getting ourselves in for. Room was an "upgrade", though from what it is difficult to say. Dated, paper-thin walls, and doorways that, because they are old and worn, flood the rooms with light from the hallway. Room 37 is next to the communal laundry and a public toilet. It has an uncomfortable double (not queen) bed. I reiterate, this was an "upgraded" room.
Finally lost it on night 3 when we were kept awake all night by someone using the washing machine between 9pm and 5am - the whole room shook. Were offered another room promptly which was great - one upstairs - "even though it costs more we won't charge you the extra". It wasn't necessary to add this comment.
Much better to be upstairs if possible. Queen bed, darker room, less hallway noise.
Not much choice for accommodation in Newmarket, so you are hamstrung. Do ask to see the room before paying - I think it will make your...
Read moreWe were charged from credit card night before we arrived when website clearly said pay on arrival and then we had to contact our bank to prove it as they said they don't take money before arrivals...but not before we had to pay again to get a key to the room. Refund was given when found that they did withdrawal but it wasn't immediate so we were less cash in our pockets than expected for day 1&2 of our holiday. The fridge freezes, so all our drinks were throwouts the next morning. The shower was not draining well and had to turn shower off to wait a few minutes to drain before carrying on as it was flowing out of the tub. Sign in cupboard says if you require an iron in your private room...ask at office... however they don't have irons to give out as suggested. If you are shorter than 5.6ft then grab yourself a chair to get towels from the rack as it is ridiculously high and there are no soap holders in the shower. Service started unfriendly as they did not believe us about the credit card withdrawal however most of the other staff were friendly, the food was lovely and it is in a great location but I won't return again as we did not enjoy the experience and a sucky start to...
