Clearbrook Motels Wanaka — Hotel in South Island

We were unfortunately a little disappointed with our stay in the Clearbrook Motel. The motel itself overlooks a little stream with a lawned area, which is quite nice, but the walls in the room are very thin, so we had to listen to the children of other guests running up and down etc on the lawns in front of our room until quite late at night. The room itself needed a bit of a decor update - the sofas were ripped and everything felt like it could do with a bit of a lift. When we first arrived, the room was not ready until about an hour after allowable checkin (the gentleman at the desk was flustered and explained they were short staffed that day, and I think he was left with both the cleaning and reception at the same time). When we first walked in we were hit with a real lemon bleach smell, which stayed with us for the entire time we were there (and I think probably effected our experience as a result). The bedroom is quite hot as well, so we didn't get a good sleep. The room comes equipped with a full kitchen, and there is a washing machine in the bathroom wet area, which we didn't use, but would be helpful. The location is good, and it's easy to access the main streets of Wanaka from the motel (it's just around the corner from the WONDERFUL Cinema Paradiso, which we thoroughly enjoyed) , and we strolled down through the streets to the main lake. I got in a huge acccident where the wind blew my camper van off a gravel road.A total stranger gave me a ride to Wanaka to Clearbrook Hotel. Vicky is absolutely amazing and kept trying to help me out and get a hold of the lame camper van place which I booked thru but unsurprisingly received no answer back just as I did. This place has an amazing view of the beautiful mountains of the area and partial lake view and the top floor has been upgraded and is extremely cozy. The owners are absolutely awesome. I can’t remember if it was John as the other owner of the place but I mostly dealt with Vicky who is the exact type of person I had heard about when researching New Zealand. Authentically nice which we don’t have much of here in America (especially here in the San Francisco area), helpful and altruistic. I would recommend anyone to stay here 10 out of 10 times if you’re ever out in Wanaka. People as genuine and helpful as Vicky (and I believe John) are hard to find in 99% of the other places...

Excellent location, very clean room.|However, we had to cut our 3-day stay short because we could not sleep - the mattress was too soft, resulting in us both having back aches.||The manager was hostile, rude and refused to refund the last day's fee because "we didn't cancel 72 hours prior." How could we cancel before we knew how uncomfortable the bed was? Furthermore, when we asked if he could offer an alternative he refused. Thus, we had to walk away as he pocketed a days rent for nothing in return.||There was no reason for the manager to be rude and insinuate we were not being honest about the sleeping quality.||We do not recommend this motel due to the discomfort, the rudeness of the manager, and his unwillingness to refund the last days rental nor offer any alternative...
