Eden Gardens Motel — Hotel in South Island

Eden Gardens motel is 500 meters outside Oamuru city centre up a hill. The impression is that this once was a rather fancy hotel with a beautiful view over the ocean, but has now deteriorated and is a forgotten motel.||||The reception was unmanned when we arrived and left, so you need to call a number for someone to arrive.||||Room had a high nice ceiling, a lovely comfortable bed and a small desk with a kettle and coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Quiet and calm. I had a good night sleep.||||Interior was rather worn down, the carpet dusty, and the ceiling was fitted with a horrible cold modern lamp more suitable for a hospital.||||There is a cafe area where you can use a microwave oven and cutlery. It seems like it should be possible to also buy a drink in the evening and breakfast in the morning, but we saw no staff during our stay so there was no one to buy from nor ask about it.||||With a bit of love and investment this place could be a charming hotel worth stopping for. Now it is an ok budget stay...

when I first stepped inside reminded me of older hotels in China. This is a Chinese run Hotel and decor is definately chinese. Second impression construction , layout , and nearby buildings had a famililiarity, little search and found out it used to be maternity wing of old Oamaru hospital. Has been well refurbished and has a certain charm to it, clean and tidy , astounding views of ocean and Oamaru city, if not from room then from end balcony. Room we had on the smaller side but O.k for two people. Modern clean bathroom small fridge and tea, coffee making facilities. Let down for me was stellite T.V with only free N.Z chanells and Chinese channels . Really needs Sky for european visitors and a larger tv screen. Enjoyed our stay, being a bit different from the norm added that bit of charm. Staff were near non existant and just a basket for room keys on checkout? It was a very comfortable stay. Although the bed is a bit hard but overall we had a good sleep. They provide the heater, and electrical blanket. The room is small but that's fine to us coz this is a motel. Reasonable price. Won't expect anything like a hotel service. The best thing is they provide unlimited wifi as well which can access in the motel. This is the great convenience for us. As you know most of other places in New Zealand we have a limited internet access. Yes we r aware of this place is a former hospital, but so far so good. Not haunted at all.
