We are planning a trip to Peru AGAIN and this prompted us to write this review. We stayed at Magic packers a few years ago. By looking at the pictures, things have not changed except for some new paint.||We found all the staff to be pleasant and the manager Luis to be very helpful and accommodating. Our room was in the back part of the hostel. It was quiet but it was quite cold if you had to go to the washroom in the morning or at night because it was open and had no roof covering the courtyard which led from the room to the washroom. Also if it rained and one would get wet trying to get to the washroom. It was quite cold if you wanted to take a shower in the morning or late at night||We booked some tours and one was to Rainbow Mountain. The tour company Magic Packers used was not of good quality. They were suppose to have oxygen handy in case it was needed. They did not and I fainted from the altitude and TORE my ligaments on my ankle when I collapsed. The tour company gave me a refund of 100 soles because of the incident.||Luis said he would not be able to give me the refund until he received it from the tour company. When we got back to Canada we got an email from Yuri that looked after the tours. He said the money was received from the tour operator and Luis would forward it.|We emailed Yuri and told him that Luis and I discussed putting the refund on my VISA.||After several emails, Luis said he could not refund on the VISA. He would send money through Western Union. Did not make too much sense because what would happen if Luis overcharged your VISA for the stay there, then we would have to wait for the money to come from Western Union. ||As I said, it has been a few years now and I have still not received my refund. 100 soles is not much money for us but one should be wary of staying there. You do not know how things are until there is trouble that needs to...
Read moreOne of the worst hostels I’ve ever stayed in. On the positive site - the double room we had was nice and clean and the staff spoke English. The hostel is in walking distance to the city centre. But that was about it. When we arrived, the double room with private bath we booked wasn’t available, so they gave us a double room without a bath, which would have been fine. But the communal showers had no warm water for the two days we stayed in the hostel. Even after making the reception aware of it and asking before showering if the warm water would work, it worked for 5 minutes before becoming cold again. After asking for a solution to the problem, they at least organised a free airport transportation for us. The taps in the bathrooms are loose. One day the water didn’t work at all because they turned it off due to construction in the building. We practically lived on a construction side. I guess because it’s off-season, they renovated the top floors of the hostel. From 7 o’clock in the morning it was loud and noisy because of the construction. Not really what you want after coming from a multi-day hike. The breakfast wasn’t at all what was presented in the pictures online. The WI-FI sometimes didn’t work. But I guess this is what you can expected for the price we payed. I would have preferred it though, if they would be open about the construction and noise from the beginning so that you know what you’re...
Read moreWe cannot understand why this hostel has such good reviews. Everybody says it is a quiet hostel but that is the opposite of true. There is loud music playing every night which can be heard in all the rooms thanks to the construction of the hostel. Every evening around 10 pm and every morning from 6 until 9 am there is a train honking that is running only one street away. That is super loud. Also there is a restaurant for locals next to the hostel which was playing loud party music until 4 am where even earplugs did not help. All of this is very bad when you have a Tour the next day that is starting at 4 am. Also: Most of the rooms only have windows to the hostel so you don’t have fresh air and if you want to have a little bit of fresh air it is loud because of the loud music coming from the rooftop. Also: The showers are often very dirty and disgusting even. The location is 15 minutes away from the centre and it stinks horribly on the streets. Last but not least there were a lot of confusions with our rooms which was really annoying. An example: we arrived in the middle of the night and could not check into the room we requested (twice!) personally at the reception a few days ago. Then we got another room and had to leave this from one minute to another because...
