Let's start with: I rarely write bad reviews. Second: it's my second time at a Selina hostel, the first one was in La Paz. Third: I'm on a long travel, about 8 months, 4 of which I've been sleeping almost exclusively in hostels/dormitory rooms, across South America and Australia, so, despite my age, let's say I have tried quite a huge amount of hostels. Well, Selina Miraflores has been absolutely the worst experience I've had so far. I spent 2 nights there, at the start and at the end of a Peru Hop 3 days tour (highly recommend btw). The first night I arrive and find out that leaving my backpack in the luggage storage at Selina costs 10 USD, basically the cost of a bed. I had sent them emails to know about the cost but never got a reply, it's not specified anywhere, obviously, if I had known about this, I would have never booked. This cost is Simply insane. After complaining for a while the receptionist offered me a discount at 10 USD for 2 nights luggage storage. I accepted. The night I came back from the tour, arrived super tired at 11.30 pm, checked in, went up to the room, they had put me, a 37 yo woman, in a 10 beds room fool of exclusively young male teens. You can imagine the mess on the floor and the dirt. If it was not enough, the bed wasn't done, so I had to wait the cleaner to come. All of this for quite an expensive price, between 16 and 18 USD per night for a bed in a big dormitory. I'll attach pictures of the room for the records.
Read moreMy stay at this hostel was by far the worst of all my travels. From the moment I arrived, things went downhill quickly. There was a long queue of nine people waiting to check in, which set the tone for the rest of the experience. When it was finally my turn, I was met with an incredibly rude staff member, Mamela. She barely acknowledged my presence, let alone offered a welcoming greeting.
When it came time to pay, she handed me the card machine without showing me the screen. Fortunately, I checked it myself and realized she had mistakenly charged me 50 USD instead of 50 soles. This was a huge error, and no apology or explanation was provided. Furthermore, she failed to explain basic hostel procedures, such as the fact that guests had to choose their own beds. I only discovered this when another guest in the dormitory explained it to me. Additionally, unlike other guests in my room, I didn’t receive the welcome drink that was supposed to be included.
The room itself was average, but the bed curtain design was impractical, as it covered the plug and shelf when closed, making it difficult to use them. The bathroom in my dorm was consistently dirty, despite a sign claiming it was cleaned five times a day. I even used the provided WhatsApp number to report the unsatisfactory state of the bathroom, but received no response or improvement.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to extend my stay. When I went to the front desk to arrange this, the staff member assisting me was completely unhelpful. She forgot to provide my new bed card, room key, and breakfast voucher, and I had to guide her through the entire process. To make matters worse, when I moved to a different room, the bathroom and showers in the 12-person dorm had no windows. One guest had a stomach issue, and seeing as the bathroom door is only a half door, the resulting smell permeated the entire dorm, which was unbearable.
There were some positive aspects to the hostel. The location was excellent, making it easy to explore the surrounding area. The breakfast was quite nice, offering a good start to the day. Additionally, the cinema room was a nice spot to chill.
Despite these positives, the overall vibe of the hostel was strange, and the negatives far outweighed the few good points. I cannot recommend staying here and was relieved when my stay finally...
