We had to stay in Manila for 1 night and booked this hotel because of the location and great reviews. I truly do not understand the 4.8 star reviews. Although the location is close to Manila Bay and a major mall, the cleanliness is subpar. I spotted a cockroach trap in our room. I asked a staff member if there were cockroaches in the building when he came to fix our non-functioning tv and he said « sometimes but not now ». I later that day saw a cockroach scurrying across the lobby floor (picture to prove it) and again the next day. I get that Manila is a city and insects may be common, just be aware of what you’re booking. The rooms are VERY basic and tired. This is definitely a no frills hotel in a very rough looking area. The pool is totally covered (roof covering) so do not think that you will be tanning while swimming. Almost no sun access. No bar, no good restaurants in building. Gym looked very questionable. Sad to say but I’ve been in better rooms in hostels for $11USD in South America. Front desk staff was nice with us, but they require that you pay a deposit of 2000pesos upon arrival as a security deposit. Upon checkout, they had us wait in the lobby for approx 10 mins as they inspected our room. We weren’t charged any extra fees but we did see them charge the lady ahead of us an extra fee for a « stained towel ». When the client tried to talk to the staff, they were non...
Read moreSmooth check-in with the help of a staff member at the reception. They have a separate reception area inside the Birch Tree Hotel building. They allowed me to check in 30 minutes before the standard time, which was great. Upon entering the room, it smelled nice. They provided shampoo and toothpaste, and there was even a hairdryer, which was a plus for me. Additionally, there was a microwave and a kettle. Unfortunately, they only have a regular TV. It would have been great if they had a smart TV, but the good Wi-Fi connection made up for it. I loved the unit I stayed in because it had a balcony. The bathroom was clean, and the shower was excellent, featuring a rain showerhead with good water pressure, plus they had a bidet. My only concern was the bedsheets and pillowcases, as I’m sure they weren’t changed from the previous guest. I noticed long hair on the sheets, and they were wrinkled. During the night, I also spotted small roaches roaming around when it got dark, so I had to keep the lights on all night. Additionally, the staff outside the corridor were quite noisy and inconsiderate of the guests. On weekends, you can also hear the bar karaoke from outside, which can be disruptive if you're sensitive to noise.Overall, it was a good stay, and I hope the management takes this feedback into...
