Penzion Encian is a comfortable stop in Slovakia and I'd recommend it to any one who wants to be comfortable in a clean and friendly environment. But it isn't fancy or overblown, some of the furniture is funky, and the restaurant doesn't stay open late. But I had a great time here. The entire place is carpeted which makes it cozy. When you pass by a window you can see the mountains in the distance too. Comfy beds with ample space for your stuff, a mini fridge, hairdryer, small but fully equipped bathrooms, just not hip. Breakfast is a small but comprehensive affair that includes juice, a meat or two, eggs, fresh fruit and veg salads, and delicious fresh pastries, the best being the poppy seed cake. We had dinner there one night too. The salads are enormous but not served with dressing. The veggies on top are meant to be a natural seasoning and this works as my salad included olives and a bit of olive oil. Tried a local dish called halusky which clearly must be a Slovakian state secret because if the rest of the world clued in to this dish, entire societies would collapse. Halusky is akin to a small thumb shaped gnocchi, covered in a salty-ish cottage cheese with some bacon sprinkled on top. The chance that this dish could be very greasy is high, but it wasn't at all and was much lighter than expected but still tangy. YUM. But get there early because they don't stay open much later than 8-9pm (this being in September). All here is reasonably priced and they have a few essentials for sale at the bottom of the stairs in case you forget something. It was a nice stay,...
Read moreComfortable small Pension in the high Tatra mountains which is central to everything in the town. The rooms are adequate although only stairs and no air conditioning. The Manager had excellent English and was extremely helpful although the other staff had no English and dealing with them was difficult. The breakfast bar had plenty of food although it started rather late (8 - 10am) and it was placed in a corner where only one person could access at a time which was not good on days the hotel was full. Meals at lunch and dinner were not very good and there were several other restaurants close by that were far superior and much better choices. It would be great to have a room facing the mountains...

No lift so numerous stairs for top floor.|What is lacking is an electric jug and cups so you can make a cup of tea in your room. It was raining and we went down at 8.30pm to buy a cuppa but it was all shut up. In fact a new arrival was trying to get in Nd reception was closed at 8.30pm although it states open until 9pm.|A electric jug in room is a normal expectation so was disappointed this was not provided. One should not have to leave the premise to get a cuppa.|Very clean and friendly staff.|Breakfast was excellent. Our evening meal...
