We found Sandton’s hidden foodie treasure chest at AtholPlace Restaurant during Restaurant Week SA 2017. We started with pre-drinks in their bar/library area to get ready for a foodie adventure like no other.
The first gem was the Greens and Garlic Soup with Kimchi. The Executive Chef, Willie Malherbe really knows how to execute exciting and unusual dishes with Asian inspiration. After the delicious soup came the Smoked Springbok Lion with Radish and Crisp Goats Cheese, the crisp goats cheese is an absolute foodie revolution. The goats cheese had a crispy layer, almost deep-fried texture on the outside and oh sooo soft cheesiness on the inside.
The main beef dish was a Fillet with Roasted Vegetables. The dish was accompanied by Pumpkin Puree blobs and Red Wine Jus that raised the dish to a whole new level. The next main up, was the Kingklip! If we had to choose to eat only one dish forever, this would be it! Come breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, tea time, you name it, this dish will go with it. Coconut, Lemongrass and Lime Roasted Kingklip with Pakchoi served with Rice Noodles and Chili Caramel. Knocked us out of this world!
Dessert was an interesting combination of Dark Chocolate and Cherries. Big and bold flavours that complimented each other so well.
AtholPlace really feels like home but with royalty treatment. The price is definitely a fine-dining-price but we paid it with a smile, because with food as good as this, to transport you to a whole new world, professional staff having a collective goal in mind to ensure everyone has an unforgettable experience. Tick! Goal achieved! And an atmosphere of awe and wonder it was definitely worth every pretty penny.
Their menu changes regularly, so we will definitely be back for more exploring!
TTT recommends you sit inside to enjoy the local art and try the Kingklip if it is available.

Read moreAn Oasis of Luxury |If you are looking for a sanctuary to relax and unwind with 5-star service, this is definitely the place to stay in Johannesburg! Having stayed at several branded 5-Star hotels in Johannesburg before, I wasn’t sure what to expect when my husband booked this gem (secretly.) From the moment we arrived the staff has been outstanding and accommodating (not to mention the place is beautiful!) This boutique property, placed 5 minutes from Mandela Square in Sandton, is a respite of luxury and style. The property and rooms are beautifully designed and the “extras” like a stocked minibar (there’s fresh ginger and lemon even) a “makeup” wash cloth and (what appears to be) Aveda products, turndown service with champagne & sweets, and a generous late checkout has exceeded our expectations (thank you Ryno for your assistance-so very gracious!) ||And let’s not forget about the service and dining experience! The creativity and quality of the meals need to be recognized as well as the staff! We arrived late (9pm) and had a day of traveling. We were greeted with smiles from Beverly, Ryno and Tatenda. Our bags were taken to our room while they showed us to the dining area. Our 3-course meal was delicious and expertly prepared, quality and presentation 5-stars! The service by Tatenda and Douglas was exemplary - everything was to our satisfaction throughout our meal and they couldn’t have been more accommodating! Breakfast was exactly the same with fresh juices and fruit, pastries and cheeses in addition to the selection of choices from the menu. Service by Ozias again was exceptional! ||As a hospitality veteran (both hotel and F&B) I can say this will be the only place we will stay going forward when visiting Johannesburg! The staff members wholeheartedly made this a “Relais & Chateaux” experience! Thank you to the staff for your hospitality, it is greatly appreciated... we only wished we...
Read moreThis was my first visit to Johannesburg, and generally South Africa. Upon my arrival, people told me that Johannesburg is not safe, and I was very worried about my stay. We arrived on the 20th in the morning after a long flight from Tanzania. The place was truly quiet, and the weather was amazing (cloudy). The team has been so good to me during my entire stay. They treated me like family. They did courtesy checks in the room frequently, which made me feel cared for. I found everyone educated and professional. They know what they do. They made me explore more about Sandton City despite the short stay. This was a great memory of my stay at Atholplace and in South Africa. I truly appreciate the big support, love, kindness, and care from Tatenda, Beauty, Jane, Melinda, and the maintenance guy who received us that morning (I can't remember his name). Also, the woman who was present that morning was really kind and made sure that we were comfortable. Without forgetting the guy who checked us in, he was very humble despite our attitudes, but professionally and successfully he was able to handle us and settle us. Atholplace is all someone may need for a breathtaking...
