This is a charming hotel, and i really want to like it, i just cannot. We enter our room, which is unbearably steaming hot despite it "only" being 22-24 degrees outside, we immediately proceed to the window, however opening them appears to be quite a challenge. We end up fighting with the doors to get them across the carpet and having to move a rather heavy armchair that is placed in the way of the window. The relief of finally opening the windows is substituted with the terror of a compressor humming loudly. Temperature was an issue during our entire stay. On our first evening when we got back to the room from dinner our room was buzzing with music from the bar area. Being above the bar area would not have been an issue if, the bar would close their 10+ windows or our room would have been better ventilated giving us the possibility to close our windows. After some time, we call the reception that tell us, that the bar was supposed to stop playing music at 20:00, which was 3h overdue. He promised to ensure that the bar closed their windows and turned down the music, however nothing happened for 45 minutes, then the windows of the bar where closed and later the music stopped.. The bathroom also did not offer a very relaxing experience. The flushing mechanism of the toilet was broken. After flushing it would continue to leak water into the toilet masking the noise of pipe and toilet flushing in the entire hotel room and bathroom. Hot water barely made it up to the bathroom sink. The bathtub was nice, however, sitting in the bathtub using the hand held shower part, the pipe leaked ice cold water at the same time. Bathroom is general was weirdly designed e.g. the towel rack was right above the toilet paper, booking access to toilet paper once the towel had been used, the soap holder in on the wall effectively blocked the ability for two people to be in the bathtub, the placement of bathroom products was strange. For me the only saving grace was that the bed is actually quite comfortable. We had taken a Large room because we wanted that extra comfort. However, sitting in the couch area at night-time was uncomfortable as the as the light Installation (2x2 unadjustable spotlight and a 5spotlight lamp though with adjustable settings) would bast you right in the eyes. The couch had a cigarette burn, the floor had several large bleach stains. In general, my feeling was, that this was once a nice hotel, however, being mismanaged and not maintained, thus offering low value for money. Final comment on the room, when i am in bed with my partner, i do prefer not to have a photo of a half naked asian lady with weird nipples just above the bed (just my personal opinion)
In terms of cleaning, the bulk of it was quite fine, but that was coupled with smaller areas that were not. E.g. the bis bathroom mirror was clean, the two small additional mirrors the mirror in the cabinet were not. Having a velour sofa, one needs the remember they are unforgiving and NEEDS to be vacuumed. At some point i dropped something next to the bed, when i reach out for it i instead found a quite nasty hair elastic covered in dust and hair.
Will i come back to the hotel, I do not think so. However, if i am in malmö again i will enjoy a glass from their springbank collection, which we unfortunately discovered half an hour...
Read moreMy recent stay at MJ's Hotel in Malmö was far from the relaxing and hospitable experience I had hoped for. Upon arrival, I encountered an issue that set a disconcerting tone for the remainder of my visit.
Upon check-in, the hotel employee requested my passport and, without seeking my consent, made a copy of it and filed it away. I immediately expressed my discomfort and objection, citing my previous experience with identity fraud. The employee insisted that it was a legal requirement under Swedish law. It was late, so I decided to address the issue the next morning.
The following day, I spoke with the reception staff about my concerns. They reiterated the necessity of keeping a passport copy, again referring to Swedish law. When they produced a document from the police, it only specified that they needed to record identity details such as name, address, and passport number—not a full copy of the passport. After I pointed this out, they apologized and attempted to retrieve the copy of my passport. To my dismay, they were unable to find it. They claimed the employee had destroyed the copy after my objection the previous night, but this explanation seemed implausible and felt like a cover-up for losing my passport details. This entire ordeal left me feeling very uneasy and concerned about the security of my personal information.
Adding to the discomfort, the hotel's atmosphere was more akin to a bustling nightclub than a restful retreat. The lobby, primarily a bar area, was crowded with non-guests drinking and partying until the early hours. Loud music played continuously, including in the hallways where the rooms are located. On Friday night, the music blared until 2 AM, making it nearly impossible to sleep. The focus of the lobby staff seemed entirely on the bar and its patrons, rather than on ensuring a pleasant stay for hotel guests.
Despite these significant issues, I must note that the rooms were nice and comfortable, and the breakfast was satisfactory. However, the overall experience was marred by the intrusive noise and the lack of guest-focused service. MJ's Hotel felt more like a nightclub with rooms attached than a hotel with a bar.
In summary, while the accommodations themselves were decent, the intrusive handling of my passport and the noisy, party-centric atmosphere made my stay at MJ's Hotel quite unpleasant. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a restful and secure...
Read moreThis quirky old hotel with its pink flamingo theme was a delight to stay in. We stayed in the largest room, a corner room with multiple windows facing in two directions on the top floor, room 402. It had a king size 4 poster bed, a living area with capacious and comfortable couch and chairs, and a spacious, pristine bathroom. A small wardrobe easily accommodated our hanging clothing, but there was not much space for other clothes.||In addition to photos of 402, I took a photo of rooms 406 and of 407 (while housekeeping was making up the rooms) - I will attach them to this review; they will be single room pics at the end in that order. ||The bar area is warm and inviting, and the breakfast room is the most charming we have ever seen. The breakfast offered fantastic variety, with all foods properly labelled to avoid allergies – without a doubt, the best of all of the 5-star hotels we stayed in on this trip.||The hotel’s location was exquisite – quiet at night (if you get a room far from the bar downstairs) but in the heart of the old town within walking distance to the most popular sites. We put on 25,000 steps in our one full day in Malmo, and saw most of the key sites. Malmo surprised us with its old-world charm and friendliness on the one hand, and its progressive, innovative vibe on the other.||The shortcomings in this hotel were: 1. The early checkout, time of 11 AM (most hotels of this calibre allow check out at noon); 2. The lack of face cloths in the bathroom, not unusual for European hotels, but inconvenient (we brought our own); and 3. The lack of telephones in the rooms - we had to get dressed and go to the reception to ask even the simplest and shortest of questions. Those shortcomings are the reason for my 4 star rating.||Overall, the positives outweighed the shortcomings by a wide margin, and we would...
