Initially booked to stay here for two nights but thankfully decided to reduce my stay to just the one night a week before arriving. ||Arrived in Brighton just before the check in time of 3pm, we hadn’t received instruction on how to access the hotel as advised on the phone call earlier this day so I called the customer service line to be advised the room would not be available until 5:30 at the earliest due to issues with linen this would not have been an issue had I been called and advised of this before arrival especially after talking to customer services earlier that day and having confirmed that I could check in to the room at 3pm. |The conversation I had with customer service was testing at the least as the agent on the phone was unapologetic and would not allow me to speak. |The fact that the room would not be ready when advised ruined my stay as I had a booking at 5pm followed by an event which started at 8pm and was unable to get changed or freshen up prior to my booking. |We were offered the option to drop our bags at the hotel which we regrettable accepted and this is when the stay became worse, the hotel looks nothing like the pictures, it’s very dated and could do with some major renovations.|I was taken to the room by the cleaner who reluctantly allowed me to place my bags in the room myself with his supervision, the room was very small and had a very strong smell of weed and smoke which is noticeable throughout the entire hotel. The room was a state which was to be expected as this had not yet been cleaned. |I dropped the bags and we found something to do until our restaurant booking, at this point we were considering not staying and travelling back home as the hotel at first glance was that bad.|Anyway we decided to stay and tried to enjoy the evening as best we could.|We returned to the hotel late that evening and made our way to our room, we were on the top floor so walking past the other rooms and hearing the amount of noise and loud music coming from other guests it was clear that we should have gone home but this was no longer an option. |We entered the room to be hit with a very strong smell of smoke and weed, the room was not very clean and was very cold, the bathroom was tiny and in order to use the toilet you have to somehow manoeuvre around the sink and the shower, well it’s not even worth trying to use as this was more of a trickle of water rather than what would be expected. |Trying to sleep was another matter, the hotel was very noisy and we were woken up several times by shouting within the hallways, we managed a few hours sleep between us before deciding enough was enough and decided to get up and decided to leave. |On walking out it was more noticeable how dirty the overall hotel is, there was sticky liquid that looked as though it had come from the bins when the cleaners were removing them from the rooms, this was all the way from the top floor to the ground floor entrance, the walls were filthy and the carpet full of stains, the whole hotel had a horrible smell which was not pleasant and was very dirty. |My overall stay here was not a joyous one. |I have complained to Customer services but I have just been fobbed off with an apology and no compensation for the late check in and the state of the room and facilities. |My advice to anyone looking to book here is DON’T unless you want no sleep and to stink of weed which I’m still trying to wash out of my clothes. |Pay a little extra and stay somewhere else, I’ve stayed in hostels that have been...
Read moreWe booked the Avalon on the day after wanting to extend a short visit. We've stayed in the area fairly often and know it well, funnily enough I used to live in a flat across the road. The hotel is well situated for the city centre the beach or the pier but even more so for the vibrant St James Street area, which it is a very short walk/stumble back. It's a great area for those visiting Brighton and wanting to do both the touristy and non touristy parts. There's always something going on in that street, we even had a quick karaoke version of Purple Rain while popping out for snacks. Our room was on the ground floor and had a large bay window which overlooked the street. There's a bus stop right outside and naturally you can hear people wandering by. The bottom of the window had been obscured to stop people peering in but I imagine people on the top deck of the bus could probably see into the room if you didn't pull over the big black out curtains. In fact I know they could because we were waving at people on the bus for fun whilst snuggling up in bed watching Come Dine With Me on the tv in the morning. The room was a decent size, it had cute decor and even had a bath. The bathroom had this mad honeycomb effect on the wall that spun me out a little bit but I'd taken psychedelics a day or so before so was probably more due to that. I can't imagine how it would be in there if you had been heavily drinking or under the influence. I definitely could have got lost in the pattern a bit if I were there under different circumstances. Very cool though, I commented on it as soon as I saw it. The room walls were decorated nicely and it was comfortable enough. Mixed reviews on the bed. It was comfy and cosy with an extra pillow and some throw cushions but my partner flips around a lot in her sleep and by the morning we must have been about 1ft away from the wall. Not sure if this was the bed or the slippy floor, wasn't a problem just a funny quirk. I see in the other reviews there are some complaints around the check in and door codes but in all honesty it seemed fairly standard to me for a small hotel that's not staffed. The process was seamless and there was no issue. Communication was really simple and when there was a small issue we were responded to straight away. I understand the point about the lack of safety from the codes but this is no different to every other place that has a similar set up and in general there was a safe vibe within the Avalon as far as I could tell. The hotel noise wasn't an issue for us at all, I quite like there being signs of life around and it certainly wasn't ridiculously loud from any other room. There weren't parties going on or people playing loud music or shouting or anything. It was generally calm and like I said just wasn't an issue. As for the outside noise I'm not quite sure what people's expectations are when you're staying in a vibrant urban area. It was absolutely fine and certainly no louder than any flat I've ever lived in in the city. I actually found it pretty comforting to know there were people around but for the convenience of the location I'm not sure you can expect the place to have a silent countryside serenity. All in all we enjoyed the place and in all likelihood will probably, if the price is right, book to stay at the Avalon again the next time my partner is...
Read moreWe got moved to this hotel as the room at the initial property we were due to stay at needed maintenance. We got an email informing us of this the night before we were due to arrive, so very short notice. I spoke to one guy on Friday night who was very helpful, but Saturday morning was a different story and was quite stressful due to poor communication. We arrived to find a very different hotel to the images found on Google and I do not know how this place has achieved a 3 star review. It’s a dump! A large gap at the top of the bedroom door meant extra noise. The bathroom door doesn’t close or lock. There were blood dots around the sink and suspicious brown speckles on the toilet seat. Paint flaking off around the bath. The towels smelled of fried food. In the bedroom the base of the bed was stained and no balance sheet was provided. Only two pillows were provided for a double bed and three grubby, stained cushions were placed. Brown specks were found on the pillow cases. Dust covered lamp bases, cupboards that pop open & don’t close fully. The decor is also poorly done. Sticky backed plastic has been used to cover the work tops in the bedroom, but this hasn’t been fitted correctly or trimmed. The windows don’t close fully which meant the room was noisy and draughty. This was especially fun when we could hear the antisocial behaviour from the group hanging around the church across the road. We tried to find another hotel but there was nothing under £300 per night. We also got back from a gig at 11pm so too late to take the 5 hour drive back home to Devon, when we had an earlier start and long day due to travel this morning. This hovel is being run remotely, which it didn’t appear to be previously from the old photos of a tidy, clean guest house. I understand costs have risen, but the cost of someone staying on site to care for the place as well as manage the service is not one to be skimped on. I would advise anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Brighton to avoid it like the plague. Disgusting. I won’t return and definitely do...
