On arrival we let ourselves in via a key safe and found that the host had kindly placed some prosecco and a card in our bedroom for our 40th wedding anniversary which was a lovely thought. However, we had mixed feelings about staying here. We only saw the host once when we called him, having had an issue with water spilling on the floor (which was entirely our fault and he kindly sorted out), but it felt more like an airbnb which wasn't the experience we were hoping for. In all fairness, I had missed the fact that it was room only on booking.com but having never having had this occur before in this type of accommodation, even during the pandemic, I had made assumptions. Having a lovely cooked breakfast is so much part of the enjoyment of staying away. The host did say he would bring us breakfast in our bedroom on the day of our ruby wedding anniversary but we didn't really want to have it there. On the plus side, he provided good information about where we could get breakfast. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. It was a good base to get to other parts of Dorchester and parking was available. We also struggled a bit with hair washing as although a hand -held shower was provided, the bath didn't have a screen to stop any water going over the edge. It's a beautiful old property with basic facilities and if you are happy with this then it's a great...
Read moreWe spent 6 nights at Beggars Knap so that we could visit relatives. It was built as a grand residence by the local brewery owner and the current owner, Mark, and his family live on site. Its atmosphere and decor are reminiscent of grand hotels before they were sadly tarted up and modernised. |As a place to stay, it does not attempt to be anything other than a delightful, somewhat quirky, place for laying down one's head for a good night's sleep, in which . it was successful. Our room contained a comfortably large bed and with a shower that provided a decent shower. The room was excellently furnished in the style of a past age. Food is not provide (except for biscuits and do-it-yourself tea/instant coffee in the room), something of which I am in completer favour, based on hotel stays over the last 60 years. However, there are more than a few nearby eateries of various types. ("Vibes", a vegetarian/vegan cafe across the road is excellent - even for a confirmed carnivore like me). |It is well situated and the area is not all that busy with an adequate amount of surrounding greenery. |We would be more than happy to stay...
Read moreBeggars Knap transformed our tiny Covid-safe wedding into the fairytale wedding day I had always hoped for. We booked to sleep in the romantic four-poster bedroom the eve of the wedding and the wedding night itself- which felt like being a Jane Austen heroine! We also hired the delightful Victorian parlour/dining room for our exclusive use - which was definitely well worth the money as we were able to come back from the registry office for champagne toasts and wedding cake. The outside of the house and it’s small garden provided elegant classic English photo backgrounds for all our wedding photos. Mark could not have been kinder or more helpful and went the extra mile to make our wedding day perfect. Definitely recommend to any bridal couple or anyone wanted to experience the magical, story book feeling of a quintessentially...
