This is a good spot to stop between IN or OH to the Carolinas. Better than driving in the dark across the Appalachian mountains. Yes, it's a bit pricier than the others in the area, but it feels safer too. My spouse had stuff stolen in his car when he stayed over within the WV capital.
They have a gym and indoor pool There's a "resto" that serves buffet breakfast (separate voucher to purchase at check in @ a discount else buy if needed) Also supposedly have dinner options too.
Decor and facilities look more higher end than typical HIE from the sitting area at the lobby to the "resto". Haven't actual cutlery and breakable plates/ cups in HIE for a long time, if ever.
Room has a nice tub and a bar thing so you don't kill yourself slipping. Toiletries are the nice Dove dispenser Beds are real queen size and bed/ pillow quality as expected from an HIE (which is why we chose HIE just keep away from their Indigo brand. Not worth it!) AC works as it should Water pressure was good and shower was the right working condition. Tub was also the right depth to enjoy a soak. It's also one of the few hotels that seems to have an exhaust. The room was great for a traveling working person. So many sockets! Also a nice table under the tv that can be moved, so i didn't need to work with the tv in front of me like in other HIEs we stayed in during this Summer road trip. Parking available on site We had breakfast there and the children loved the bacon and biscuits. They even had scones for those who would want it. Soda and juice options plus a non lactose option for milk! A big plus for someone with a lactose intolerant child. The booth seats had a small tv that entertained the twins with Disney Today was sausage (my phone idiotic wrote gross instead of sausage), biscuit with sausage gravy, bacon, scrambled eggs, French toast, and bacon. Fresh fruit available and the usual cereal.
Susie (hopefully got her name right) was pretty nice during check in. She also put us in an ADA room after learning I was hearing impaired. So a light something is in the room in case of an emergency to get my attention.
Only negative I can say for this place is there didn't seem to be enough luggage carts. We waited a long time for one to get back down. So unsure if it's because a lot of people don't really return it immediately or there's not enough Not a deal breaker.
Overall, we'll be sure to check in here again when our route takes us through WV again.
EXTRA NOTE: if Google Maps makes you take a road called "paint creek..." it something. Don't! Choose to stay on the highway route which runs parallel to this small (barely fits 2 SUV, on this object 2 lane curvy road without shoulders in many parts that could make your car fallat a steep...
Read moreWe stayed at the Holiday Inn & Suites last night in Beckley WV. I wanted to make you aware of the concerning state of this hotel. I am aware that the microsoft issue affected checking in, which was inconvenient but at least there was a reason for the long lines. The hotel is so understaffed. The very patient and kind people at the front desk were completely overwhelmed and had no help. I asked for linens for our pull out sofa and they had nobody to bring it up to me, so I waited at the front desk while they got it. We needed 1 extra pillow later that evening and I was informed I received the very last extra pillow in the whole hotel.
Our room was 204. It had a strange faint smell of urine. The linens we received for the bed had large stains on them. The room itself was more spacious than we expected, which was nice but there seems to have been no maintenance on the room for a long time. The sink fixture was loose and you could not turn the water temperature without having to hold it in place, this can easily be fixed by a handyman. There was hair on the vanity top as well as the counter near the fridge. The room overall was not cleaned properly. There was dry dark liquid on the cups near our coffee machine. The fridge had a freezer that had iced over, clearly something spilled on the ice and it was really gross looking.
The ice machine on the 2nd floor was not in service at all.
I understand that free continental breakfast is not provided at the Beckley WV location. While continental breakfast at your location is not explicitly stated, it doesn't say that there is not a complimentary continental breakfast on the website. We made a special trip out to grab breakfast items from Kroger when we learned that there was a charge for the breakfast buffet. I will note that the menu looked almost identical to the free breakfast we received at the Holiday inn in Versailles, KY. My point is that, I wish we were aware breakfast was not included prior to arrival.
These are systemic issues at your business, I did not bother the overwhelmed front desk staff with these matters. These inconveniences were unnecessary and...
Read moreWe recently stayed here for 5 nights last week while visiting New Gorge NP. Which by the way is very convenient as New Gorge NP is very spread out and logistically this location worked out great with bouncing between the different parts of the park. With that said, this place on the surface looks great however once we entered our 1 bedroom suite it didn't take long for us to start noticing things. And I am not talking about taking a white glove and running it across the dresser or being super knit picky it was basic stuff. Like for instance there was old candy on the floor in plain sight by the master bedroom, old food left in the refrigerator that didn't belong to us, and the door entering the room had a noticeable 1 inch or more gap in it at the bottom. And it was a good thing my children remembered to bring their flip flops to wear in the shower because we are still to this day not sure what the black stain covering the entire bathtub floor was? It also didn't help that walking through the hallways on the 4th floor and passing housekeeping and hearing them complain and obviously disliking their job which explains why our room was not that clean. There is no continental breakfast which is not a huge deal but the breakfast they did offer is not worth the $12/person price tag. Not when it is the same breakfast every single day! My kids actually got tired of french toast and bacon and kept asking when they would start serving pancakes or something different. Staff at the front desk and restaurant were all nice and welcoming and that's the reason for the 3 stars. Again for the location this place is great and the Tamarack Plaza is less than a mile from here with a Starbucks which was great. If we ever come back to the area we will probably not stay here and will try a Marriott or Hilton...
