This hotel was booked by my husbands company for an extended stay. M-F for eight weeks. I traveled with him. We had never stayed at a Tru hotel before so there were no expectations. And we weren’t paying for it so it was a blessing. After reading the reviews I was a little skeptical. However, after the first week there I looked forward to coming with him each week. By the third week I actually felt at home there. I don’t believe they are set up for extended stays but they fulfilled all of our basic needs and then some. True there aren’t any microwaves or coffee makers in the rooms but for me personally, that was no big deal. I would highly recommend researching what they offer before booking if those things are important to you. They do have a microwave in the lobby and hot delicious coffee and tea offered 24/7 also in the lobby. I think it’s a wonderful way to get people out of their rooms and around others. Something our world is very much in need of especially since 2020. They don’t offer laundry facilities but they aren’t an extended stay hotel so that makes sense to me. They do have a wonderful gym which I made use of almost daily. And a filtered water station outside of the gym. There are some good restaurants close by ( they are listed on a board in front of the elevators). And a wonderfully interesting place called Tamarack nearby that I would highly recommend. This hotel offers a free and delicious hot breakfast daily with some gluten free options that I was happy to see. You must try the wonderful swinging chairs in the lobby. They have a pool table in the lobby that seemed to get people together for a game of pool. I’m a people person so I loved being in the lobby people watching or chit chatting with the staff or other guests. If you come in to check in and no one is at the front desk please be patient because they care about their guests and are more than likely helping one at that moment. Out of all I’ve mentioned in my review my favorite part of this hotel was the staff. They are bar none some of the nicest people that I had the privilege to meet and spend time with there. From front desk and breakfast attendant to housekeeping staff and maintenance. They are the most close knit and family like staff that I have ever seen work together in a hotel. They are friendly and customer service oriented. And as of three weeks ago our time there was up and I miss them. A special shout out to Rebecca GM, Gina AM, Missy, John, Corey, Susan, Debbie, Alan, AJ, Shannon and Maggie. I’m sorry if I missed anyone. They all made me feel like a part of their TRU family as we called this place home for eight weeks. So when you are considering a stay here whether it be a day or a week, take the negative reviews with a grain of salt and go experience it for yourself and draw your own conclusions. If not you may miss out on something based simply on others thoughts. Our needs are all different. But what I needed was to feel the warmth from the staff here and that I did. I’m sorry for the length of this review but I didn’t want to leave...
Read moreStopped by the Beckley, WV location on May 26th. We are Hilton Hotel people but Tru is not a hotel we care for and will never stay again. I’ll sleep in my car first. The compact concept definitely was not enjoyable. Everything felt cramped like a sardine can. The bed was horribly uncomfortable. I could barely stand up straight leaving the hotel my back was hurting so bad. I detest the everything task lighting in the room. It makes things very dark. The hand soap squeeze bottle (and all the other toiletries) was not easy to operate and hurt my hand. I don’t like fighting for soap. Not good for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Seems like an ADA thing. Just definitely not my thing. Now, let me touch on this specific location a little more. Well, it’s in a terrible location. The side road and around the property was overgrown with rickety old shacks close by. One side is the highway but the area felt downright creepy pulling in and walking up to the door. The front desk man at 11pm on 5/26/24 was really nice. That’s about all the good I can say about this place. The floors in our room were sticky and dirty. There was green algae growing around the bottom of the shower door and dirt on the shower ledge. The walls are very thin so you hear every little thing. The bedspread was thin as paper and did not look crisp and clean. The washcloths were very thin and dingy looking. I could literally see through the washcloth fabric. Almost like the cleaning service they are using isn’t truly getting the linens clean and they are not throwing them out when they start looking old. I plugged my phone charger into the outlet on the outer ledge of the television. All of the sudden the television and the lights started blinking, so I had to remove my charger from that outlet. What was that about? The shades are doubled but they are thin and do not pull down far enough to keep the morning light out. With the room being so small, it was literally blinding in the a.m.. The little round red nightstand is silly and not very functional. There’s not much lighting in the room and the light over my side of the bed was not even working. And, two times in the middle of the night something started messing with our room door knob and trying to push our door open. Needless to say, I didn’t get much rest. I read another post from weeks ago where someone experienced the same. No coffee maker in the room. But of course not because where would they sit it?!? There’s literally no room in the place it is so dinky. The pancake maker was broken at breakfast which was about par. Another post from 2 months ago said the same. With this concept, it’s like the Hilton people all got together and said, “We should create something comparable to a Motel 6 but charge a whole lot more money.” I’ve never been so glad to leave a place in my rearview mirror. If you are looking for posh or even just casual relaxation, this isn’t it. It “Tru”ly was not a...
Read moreI seem to have mistaken this for a hilton branded hotel. No coffee, no microwave, no cabinet or drawer space, not even a damn clothes iron! Lets not mention this place was a zoo for the first two days. Constant stomping until midnight. People coming and going constantly. I have stayed in hilton hotels for years. We have stayed with All different brands, at all different price points. Steer clear if you are looking to stay in an actual hotel. This is much closer to a motel 6, but motel 6 at least has basic amenities.
This stay has costed more than my mortgage, which does not say much. Regardless, the issues are endless. Breakfast is not consistent monday-sunday. The time changes throughout the week. Why is this? Never have a experienced a hilton breakfast ending at 9am. It is really disappointing to watch the front desk attendant staring at me as she is shutting the curtain over the breakfast food at 9:01am. Let's not mention that the breakfast was the same EVERY SINGLE DAY. The only day it changes was today. stausage Patties instead of bacon strips. Sadly the sausage is still labeled bacon from yesterday?? Hello? Serve safe standards???
Bare bones amenities in the room. Honestly that is unacceptable. The coffee in the lobby is nothing more than coffee flavored dish water. Please train them on how to properly make and refresh a pot of coffee. Lightly browned water shouldn't be served as coffee. Call it what it is, dirty water. This normally would be fine, but I couldn't brew my own coffee to offset the nasty water I drank this morning.
No microwave??? This is another big one. On vacation, people tend to indulge and eat out. Now I'm left with the choice of wandering down to the lobby to find a microwave and warm my meal back up, or eating it cold. Another huge miss here.
Lastly, here I am eating breakfast. The same 3-4 workers, three women, and one man have been gossiping behind the counter since I arrived for breakfast. Everything from lottery, to their husbands, barbies, gossip about employees missing work. It seems HIGHLY unprofessional for a worker to be complaining about other workers around guests. Makes me assume this place is ran poorly, and is not upholding cleanliness standards. I highly doubt guests want to hear your personal conversations while we are eating our very subpar and repetitive breakfast.
I can excuse the clothes iron, and even the noise and children being allowed to treat a hotel like jungle gym. I cannot excuse the basic misses that separate hilton from the rest. This unfortunately will be my last stay in these sub par "tru" hotels. This is just embarrassing. All around. I hope this review is scathing because the...
