Cute if you're not there long, but has serious problems. Firstly, the location is excellent. I've been to quite a few little places like this as a kid, and if I had to choose my cabin to be this close to town, I'd want it to be nestled in a secluded spot as this one is. Also, the shower/tub situation is excellent. Wifi worked fine, and the TV was new. Cabin is warm, and the fireplace/heater make sure you're comfortable.
What's not comfortable are the old broken-in couch you can feel falling through its supports, or the rock-solid pillows & mattress. If you like hyper-firm it's perfect for you, but I definitely lost sleep trying to get comfortable as the bed kept all 200lbs of me flat as a board. The pillows are those hard foam pillows that are unforgiving rectangles of discomfort. Bring your own. No spare blankets, so bring those too.
The room is dated, and there are some clear signs the place is in need of remodel or better staff. Wooden floorboards were separating near the tub due to water damage. There was a broken mug under the sink, cleaned like it was still acceptable to use. We asked for new towels one day, and the staff said they'd be over in 20 minutes. Three hours later they strolled in to clean the room as if we weren't there or didn't call. Floor was generally dirty when we got there.
Decoratively it's very dated. Cheap pictures that look like they've been cut out a magazine or purchased in bulk are screwed into the wall in plain wooden frames. They're also incredibly random in their placement. Not great to look at. Weird 90's floral wall paper trim. Our bed was placed such that it cut one picture in half, like nobody even tried to make it look nice.
Upon checkout, no way to do it until 9am... and then the staff were 15 minutes late getting to work! Video check out over a computer because I guess the owners don't trust the staff or can't bother to work there themselves.
TLDR; if you don't mind hard beds and dated decor, there are worse places to stay. Just don't expect timely service or a very clean cabin, because you won't...
Read moreWe had stayed at Sleepy Forest in Big Bear several times before and always had a good experience. However, this time we stayed in cabin #8 and it was not good. As you enter the porch there was dry rot on all the posts and chipping paint, not very impressive! As you entered the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom there was no doubt this cabin needed to be renovated. Paint was chipping, wallpaper loose on the walls, flooring needed to be redone. We are hoping that cabin #8 is next in line for a complete remodel. I will say the cabin was clean and the bed was comfortable. There was no soap at the bathroom sink. I asked the manager for some and she told me that there was soap in the bathtub area. They have a container on the wall with same soap for shampoo, conditioner and body wash, which was a little difficult to transport to the bathroom sink. She also told me people/kids were putting the bar soap down the toilets and clogging them up! Fortunately, I had a small bar of soap in my luggage. There were no stoppers for the bathroom or the kitchen sink. I asked for one and they didn't have any - a little hard to do dishes when you can't put soap and water in the sink. It took a day to get a dish towel. I asked for a dish cloth and they didn't have any. They did finally bring me a sponge. I told them a nice touch would be a roll of paper towels for the kitchen. They told me they used to do that, but people were throwing them down the toilet and again clogging up the toilets. I would recommend that you do not stay in cabin 8 until it has been remodeled. I had booked another cabin without a kitchen that had been newly renovated, I wish I had kept that cabin, but I wanted the convivence of a kitchen. Also #8 is connected to 2 other cabins. At 11:00 at night the people next door, I think, were using their jacuzzi tub - that was pretty loud. Pick a cabin that is not connected to another one! I will stay here again, we like the area, but I will be pickier on what...
