I read some of the other reviews on here and just want to put a disclaimer out there. My star rating is based on the quality I got for the price I paid!! If you're wanting a hotel with all the facilities and lots of guest service like breakfasts and room service, I would recommend going to a different hotel. If you're like me and you're wanting something super cheap and close to lots of restaurants, the downtown area, and the university, I would definitely recommend this place. I stayed here a couple years ago (before the remodel) and wasn't a fan. I knew they had remodeled the place so I booked a room here for a couple days last week. This time around was way better than I was expecting. The room was big and clean except for some dust in the corner of the bathroom, the bed was pretty big too and comfortable, and the air conditioner worked perfect. I interacted with two different staff members and both were super friendly, professional, and accommodating. I had zero issues checking in or out. I had a hard time finding any pictures of the place online from after the remodel, so I took one of the room we stayed in for anyone considering booking (P.S I took this as we were checking out, everything was made up when we checked in)

I've been coming to Chico a few times a year for work and since the remodel of this University Inn, I have been staying here ever since. I particularly like the location of this place, being right on Main Street just two blocks from the center of downtown. I’m usually coming alone on business, so I appreciate the quick walking access to restaurants, bars, and Chico State. I'd stayed here before the remodel when it was a bit old and dated just due to its price point. Now that it's been remodeled, it's a bit more expensive but still one of the cheapest hotels in Chico. I still find for the price, the new rooms are pretty good value. There is no breakfast and the vending machine didn't work when I last checked, but overall everything else is pretty good. The king bed is comfortable and I usually bring back leftovers and store in the decent sized fridge. The front desk is very helpful which helps me feel safe staying here alone as a girl. If you're looking for an affordable stay and don’t need anything fancy shmancy this is the one!

I was passing through Chico and stayed here for 2 nights. The outside looked really interesting and modern but it’s really just a renovated older motel. The rooms weren’t particularly modern but they were clean and fairly big. The beds were comfortable. Some of the furniture is dated but they have unique features like a retro-style microwave. The girl at the front desk was very nice and suggested a bunch of things to do in and around Chico. The best part of this place was the location - we were basically able to walk to every store and restaurant we visited during our stay, and bidwell park was only a short drive away. Given the location, quality of the room, and price, this motel offers great value and I’d recommend to others too.

DO NOT STAY HERE!! After a long day of traveling we were too tired to drive to our originally planned destination and decided to stay in Chico instead. We started calling different hotels for availability at around 9:00pm. This hotel said they had a room available and the pictures on their website looked ok so we booked the room. After arriving the hotel looked more run down than the pictures had shown. We stayed the night and slept in the next morning since we were up most of the night due to loud noises and homeless people roaming the parking lot and going through the overflowing trash can outside of our room window. When we were getting our things packed up and ready to go check out at around 10:30am we saw a COCKROACH going across the floor from the bathroom. We were absolutely disgusted! After seeing that we decided to check the bed for roaches and bed bugs, when we pulled the sheet up we found multiple MOLDY BLOOD STAINS! We finished packing all of our things and I went to the front desk to complain and ask for a refund since those are both health hazards. I showed the employee (I think his name was Sam?) the pictures and he showed the house keeper. Both of their faces looked horrified. He said that I need to call him tomorrow for a refund. So I called back today and Sam was not there to speak to, instead I spoke to Sakir Ali who identified himself as the manager. He said he would not issue a refund since we stayed the night, he said that I should have told them about it when we checked in. I explained that we did not discover the cockroach and moldy bed until the next morning 30 min before check out. I asked if he wanted me to send the pictures and he accused me of LYING!! He just kept saying "no that didn't happen, you're lying". After he was so disrespectful I asked to talk to the person above him or the owner of the establishment and he refused to give me any information. He ended up hanging up on me. I have worked in customer service my whole adult life and I have never heard of a manager handling a situation this way. Sakir is not capable of being a manger if he treats customers like this especially over something that is a real health hazard. It is not right that this establishment stands by putting their guests in rooms with roaches and mold and accuses them of lying about it! I will be contacting their local health...

Horrible. Deserves a zero-star rating. This is a place that apparently doesn't care in the least about maintaining minimal quality standards. Examples:

Walkways were dirty, with cigarette butts everywhere. Room was filthy, with a pervasive foul odor. It was supposedly a non-smoking room, but our clothes and luggage were permeated with a nasty smell that would indicate otherwise. Walls had holes. Light bulbs were out in two lamps. Sink and counter in bathroom were barely attached to the wall, hanging at a 30 degree downward slope, making it impossible to place any items on the counter. No maid service until 5 pm, and then the "service" was simply a poorly made bed. The credit card my sister-in-law used to make the reservation was charged, even though we asked that our card be used. The semi-conscious desk clerk -- it's not clear to me if he was high, drunk, or mentally-challenged -- tried to claim that the room had been pre-paid on Expedia, which was absolutely not true.

Bottom line: One of our worst hotel experiences ever. We've stayed at two other inexpensive downtown Chico hotels in the past, and both of them, while basic, were clean & comfortable. As we told the clerk when we checked out, you don't have to be sh*y just because you're...
