6 night booking/ 5 night actual stay. Late July 2024. Self. Extremely Musty. The scent of mold was pervasive throughout the room, but particularly strong along the bed’s headboard; in fact, so strong that I had to sleep upside down (with my head placed along the foot of the bed). However, this improvised sleeping position was merely a band Aide. It simply reduced the toxic smell. The humidity, despite the AC, made for damp bedding (very uncomfortable feeling). I attempted to alleviate the pungent smell and damp sheets by opening the window- didn’t help. What’s worse, after 3rd night I developed a headache that would exacerbate each time I walked into the room. The scent of mold was everywhere. In fact, I departed two days ago and still have a lingering headache and my eyes have trouble focusing. The green carpet (1970’s throw-back) was also damp. I’ve never been so grossed-out by a carpet in my life. I would not allow my feet to touch the carpet (wore slides). In addition, the popcorn ceiling in the bathroom was coming undone (another victim of the humidity, no doubt). See posted pic. Breakfast was alright, nothing special but not horrible. The location is the best part of the hotel. It is close the Autumn Cafe and Latte Lounge (both great eateries). And, 2.5 miles from Cooperstown All-Star Village. The place appears to be run by young post college grads. Take that for what it’s worth. The smell forced me to leave a day early. I couldn’t wait to leave that room (and hotel). Despite my bad experience, I was not credited a night because I unknowingly booked through a third-party and was informed they couldn’t do anything for me. When I booked, I saw nothing but third party vendors. The Marx Hotel does not post their actual telephone number, or maybe it’s hidden way down the line (I didn’t see it). This may be a new scam set-up by the hotel industry. I will be contacting that third party soon. Advice: * BOOK ALL HOTELS DIRECTLY FROM HOTEL.* All this despite spending a small fortune, approximately $2280 or $380/night for 6 nights. But actually -more- because I only actually stayed 5 nights/ left a day early. I would never stay at this hotel again, nor do I recommend it.

CALL THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT IMMEDIATELY. I stayed in Room 310 from July 30-Aug 2. Only photos can describe the disgusting conditions I found. I am a frequent traveler and have stayed in accommodations of all price ranges. You shouldn't have to pay for CLEAN. It is apparent this hotel is not spending any of their revenue on facility maintenance. And I paid nearly $300 a night to expose myself to this filth. My room was dirty, damaged and smelled of wet, mold and mildew. The shower had 10-12 inches of mold growing up the corners of the stall. Wallpaper was peeling off the walls and the moisture damage was clearly visible. Condensation from the AC unit had made it's way out 6 feet from the wall, so I couldn't walk on the carpet around the bed without getting wet. The parking lot is riddled with potholes and is very poorly lit at night. This is a trip and fall hazard. I was never offered another room...only told that maintenance would come in to address the wet carpet. Guess what...that never happened. Unfortunately, the desk staff was just another disappointment. The young lady who checked me in was rude and dismissive and she made no attempt to make me feel like a welcomed guest. The Oneonta health department needs to be called in to review this property. The hotel serves food as well but I refused to go anywhere near the restaurant given the conditions I viewed in my room. Please do not give this hotel your business until they clean up their property.

The Marx Hotel has such personality, my partner and I really loved it. The hot breakfast options on weekend days were perfect quality, crunchiest bacon I have ever had at a hotel. The staff was so incredibly patient and kind with our questions and even gave us complimentary water bottles during our stay! The fact that the king bedroom was so so spacious and had a bathroom with great accessibility (A giant tub and two shower heads! One with a moveable shower hose is unheard of at hotels at this reasonably affordable price!) and very clean made it a 10/10. A++++ to everyone involved with upkeeping this hotel. BONUS - The second story takes you directly to Main St. where local shops are all so easy to walk to. As for any dislikes, it would just be nitpicking honestly. A well-rounded hotel all around. The locks of the doors are a little stiff (which can be loud so I hope anyone on our floor was not bothered, lol), but can be easily managed. The Wi-Fi was a little spotty at times, but it came back enough for nighttime tablet watches. :) (Note - Not the fault of the hotel itself, but be warned of the loud train horn sounds at night and early morning.) Disclaimer: I copy and pasted my original review from booking.com to here as I felt that the Google reviews here are rather unfair to this hotel! So here's some positivity, while being as unbiased as I can. The Marx has character, the older features like the wallpaper feel very cozy. I would 100% come back again.

Old, outdated - be prepared for malfunctions; just hope nothing goes wrong because management is more infuriating than anything & need customer service training.

First impression. Check in staff was kind, friendly & informative. Unloading area isn't covered, a little inconvenient in the rain. Older hotel, nothing fancy but gets the job done. 3rd floor and room had a musty smell; but on the 2nd day I overheard the cleaning staff reporting it to someone and when we returned later in the day it smelled more like Febreeze. Cleaning staff was friendly. Breakfast was mediocre and bland.

On the last morning of our stay, the fire alarm goes off around 6 am (or so). (Lovely way to be woken up, way earlier that needed.) After standing outside for a bit, hotel gets cleared by the fire department to go back in. After laying back down, about a half hour (or so) later it happened AGAIN.

(Note: I was told the alarm went off a third time - after we left. They silenced the alarms (hello safety hazard) to prevent them from continuing to sound because they were unsure what was causing the issue. )

After being cleared a second time, I opt to check out. I asked the girl checking me out what they are doing to recifty the situation. She said she didn't know -"she will check me out but she can't do anything, that I will need to speak with her manager" (reasonable), who happens to walk around the corner.

What was worse than the hotel experience that day, was the daytime manager, Mary. I asked what they were doing to compensate for the situation; that evacuating once was inconvenient but twice was unreasonable. Her body language and demeanor from the moment she walked up was smug and condescending. She said she didn't know and are trying to figure out what is going on. I said "can you call me when you do know, before I leave a bad review" (as in, let's try to resolve this). Which she responds, go ahead and leave a review and starts to walk away. In which I said, you're rudely going to walk away? (Again trying to resolve this while on site.) She said "yes, because I threatened her with a bad review". And proceeds to tell me they didn't know what was going on yet. To which I said, I wasn't asking what the cause was, I cared how she, the manager, was handling the guests. She told me it wasn't her fault. Obviously, it wasn't her fault, nor did I imply it was. However, when you stay at a hotel, you are paying for and expecting a good night sleep, which barring hotel guest issues, should be uninterrupted. While it is not her fault personally, the hotel which she is managing is responsible for some sort of malfunction. I wasn't expecting much, for starters, a sympathetic and sincere apology (not a smug 'manager' who seemed anything but sincere). Perhaps a discount for the trouble their outdated hotel caused; or even offering to extend checkout time if I was willing to stay. Granted I was tired, had a headache and was IMO, appropriatly grumpy; but a kind manager with good customer service could have easily addressed the issue.

Note: Heard from other teammates, their experience with the same manager BEFORE the alarm incident happened, was also...

The gym has a maximum of 4 machines and most of the time they don't work.NEVER GO TO THE BASEMENT ALONE!! The pool is just a rumor at this point. Also, it smells very goony in the hotel. While sleeping in my room there was something whistling, if you hear whistling, you didn't. One more thing, while I was in the elevator just doing my thing, my curiosity got the best of me and it was best to press the button. The B button. So there, there i am. Standing in this very elevator where I dont know what's gonna happen next. I don't know when it's going to be the last time I ever see life again. And boom the doors start to come to an end. They close shut. I'm there standing for about 6 good secons until I hear the beep and come to a stop. The doors stood still for a good 2 seconds and finally opened when it was time. Time was the only thing holding me back. Because if I stayed another minute down there, it would have been my last time seeing day light. The room was foggy with a hint of musk and oil. A gas leak looked like it had ruptured and a basement full of emptiness tied it all together. Rumor has it, a "monster" lurks down there and comes out when the clock strikes three. We'll sure damn wasn't three. But when I walked out of the elevator to take a scroll, there was 2 empty hallways in which none looked like it came to a complete stop. Well guess what i did. I went left. Why didn't I go right? Well because I saw the monster on the right. So why the hell would I go right. I have never ran so fast to my elevator in my life. I pressed any button to get me out of there, my life was on the line. I pressed the 6th floor and it slowly waited to go up. Honestly my experience has been great, never had a experience like this before and dont wish it on anybody. Definitely not my fault because why the hell are they keeping that thing down there. Only going to give 3/5 because the...
