2024 UPDATE:
Since my original review we have stayed here 2 more times! We love this hotel. If you go during off season, it's even better - super quiet and relaxing. We love that it has laundry, and all the other amenities in the Fun Dome (pool, hot tub, sauna, arcade, workout area, shuffleboard, mini golf). I like reading in the Fun Dome while my son enjoys the activities. Even just the chance to explore the hotel is great for allowing some independence for kids without worrying. The hotel staff are all super friendly and helpful!
My only complaint is that the fitness equipment is not maintained. One treadmill has been broken for over a year. The cable machine is essentially non functional. For us, getting an opportunity to work out on road trips is key, so this aspect is lacking. If the hotel could upgrade or repair their fitness equipment, I would have ZERO complaints. Luckily, if you come during nice weather, it's a gorgeous (hilly) run up the road past Six Flags, and there are hiking trails back there as well.
Despite the fitness room lacking, we will be back next year and this hotel will continue to be a stop for us on our annual roadtrip.
2023 First of all - this hotel exceeded our expectations solely on the basis of its character and aesthetic (or "vibes")! The hotel lobby was decorated for the holidays and super inviting! The staff member who checked us in was enthusiastic and friendly and gave us a map of the building. The building's history is super interesting and again, the aesthetic throughout is fantastic. Not your typical cookie-cutter hotel at all! The "fundome" is so retro! It's perfect for kids - pool, hot tub, sauna, arcade and fitness area, plus a bar and restaurant. We had a lot of fun wandering around exploring everything. The beds were really comfortable and the breakfast buffet at the Haymarket (on-site), though not included, was delicious (plus if you buy an adult breakfast, you get a kid's breakfast free, so it's worth it!). If you're an IHG member, there is an option for late check out, which is great if your kid won't leave the arcade! We were on a 5 day cross country road trip, and this was a great place to stop. Next time we'll stay 2 nights so we get a full day to really enjoy the amenities at this hotel. Plus, if you happen to be going to Six Flags, it is literally right next to the hotel.
The only constructive criticism I have is while the aesthetic of the building is fantastic and historic, the rooms could be modernized without losing that vibe, as they seem dated. The soundproofing is also lacking - we could hear all the kids in the neighbouring rooms/hallway! Given that it's mostly (large, loud) families staying here, better soundproofing would be helpful!
We would definitely stay here again (and hope to!). The Holiday Inn "Holidomes" are few and far between but this was the highlight of...
Read moreThere was no one to greet me when I entered into the lobby. Waited for approximately 5 minutes before a member of guest services even showed up. I was shown a map to my room, however, no other information was offered. I had to ask around about dinning times, Easter brunch, pool closing time, etc.
The newly renovated rooms are VERY nice. I was impressed with the new decor. The mattresses are from Beautyrest and they are very comfortable. There was a mini fridge in our room, a Keurig Coffee maker with 3 K-cups, blow dryer, iron, and free wifi. I would give the room alone 4.5 stars out of 5.
The food at the Haymaker restaurant in the hotel was overpriced and not good at all. Everything tasted like it was pre made and heated up in the microwave. Also, the restaurant needs a makeover/update decor. Kids under the age of 12 do get to eat free off a nice kids menu per each adult entree ordered.
The pool was nice and big, however, the water in the pool, children's pool and especially the hot tub seemed to be lacking chlorine. The hot tub was disgusting and had lots of skin particles floating in it. It is also rather dark/deem in the pool area. This area could use more lighting. The pool area is pretty cool, just needs to be better cared for. Miniature golf was a joke. Holes in random places right in the middle of the shuffle board game area, old, worn and broken equipment. There were 3 putters about big enough for a 4 year old to use and the plastic wiffle style golf balls were broken. The miniature golf would have been a great perk if it was kept up and playable.
There is a little tiki style bar outside the pool area. This is a nice perk but beer was $5 for a small plastic cup. Vending machines offered lots of choices and took debit cards for payment as well as cash, however, the prices are ridiculously high.
Free shuttle go to and from Six Flags.
Staff members I encountered were all very nice.
Hotel is pet friendly.
We will go...
Read moreWe picked this location because it appeared to have pretty good amenities. Was impressed with the coloring pages for the kids to do. The pool area was very crowded due to a 40th birthday party. The hot tub was super crowded, shoulder to shoulder. The mini golf course was not accessible because a mom had set it up for her son to use it for his RC truck. The elevator was out, but our room was in the basement. The room temperature was very hot and could not be adjusted. We had a fan which helped. The shower was wonderful. There was running in the hallway above us and no supervision of kids at all. The room was adequate, but there was a cockroach in the bathroom. The beds were ok, not what we have come to know at most Holiday Inn's. I used the points to lower the cost of the room and wish I would have just stayed in Fenton down the road. We have stayed there and even though it does not have the huge pool and other amenities, it is much more comfortable. I would only recommend this for families that want to let their kids run off steam and the parents to be able to relax. Quiet time starts at 11 and trust me not a minute sooner. We just kept our TV on till that time. We asked for a poolside room so we could access everything on the inside, we were pretty far from the pool (which was fine) but still had so much running right at our room. We did use the fitness center, which was good, just wish there would have been more room in the hot tub. The restaurant had good food and the staff at the restaurant amazing. All in all, an okay stay, just not at the level of the other Holiday Inn's that we stay at. Again, I would recommend the hotel for larger families that want to let the kids have...
