DON'T GO HERE!!! Not only is the food mediocre at best, especially compared to the much better selection and quality of Japanese foods like sushi and ramen, it will make you sick! They overcharge you for piles of MSG and food dye. I wasn't going to say anything bad online and simply not go there anymore, but then my dad, boyfriend, and I got sick after eating there. We live separately and eat separately, yet we all had the same symptoms that signaled food poisoning. I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager, Alex, to let him know we got sick because they just opened and we wanted them to err on the side of caution.
He was super rude and condescending and insisted we prove it by going to the ER. I told him it was not that dire we just feel really ill and can tell it's from the terrible food they served. In the restaurant we got great customer service (thanks, Christine), but this guy wouldn't let up trying to defend the food quality and eventually on his own offered a refund (my dad and I spent over $150 there). We said yes because I thought it was a kind gesture, but today when I told him what time I was planning on stopping by with the receipts he insisted on arguing AGAIN we prove we really got sick from their food in the face of me saying I'm picking up the refund HE OFFERED WITHOUT ANY REQUESTS OR COERCION. This manager doesn't understand customer service whatsoever and decided to look a gifthorse in its mouth. I'll be going to urgent care and filing a claim against the restaurant not only for my medical care, but also for the wages my boyfriend and I lost due to their horrible food giving us digestive issues.
Here are some MUCH better sushi and ramen places in Evanston: Ton-Ichi Ramen, Tomo Japanese Street Food, Sea Ranch Sushi and Ramen, Kuni Japanese High End Sushi, Todoroki Sushi and Hibachi

Conveniently located in downtown, Hokkaido offers a dining experience that falls short of expectations despite its popularity. While the atmosphere impresses, the food and service leave much to be desired.
The culinary offerings at H Ramen and Sushi are underwhelming:
Sushi: The sashimi is disappointingly thin, resembling nigiri portions. The sushi lacks freshness and fails to inspire, even in an all-you-can-eat setting.
Ramen: The broth shows promise, but the small serving size makes it a questionable value for à la carte orders. The beef in the ramen appears overcooked and flavorless, suggesting it may have been repurposed after broth preparation.
The service is mediocre at best:
Forgetful staff: The server neglected to bring water, wasabi, and ginger. Inaccurate orders: Mistakes were made with the number of ramen dishes ordered.
The restaurant's ambiance stands out as its strongest feature: Even on a crowded weekend night, the space maintains an energetic vibe. High ceilings, chandeliers, and graffiti create an interesting visual contrast.
In conclusion, Hokkaido’s prime downtown location likely contributes to its customer base, but the establishment fails to deliver on food quality and service. While the atmosphere provides a pleasant backdrop, it's not enough to compensate for the overall mediocre...
Read moreIt was the WORST SUSHI AYCE ever. They put TOO MUCH RICE for sushi. That’s the worst ratio I have tried in my life. And they force you to eat them all or charge you for the leftovers. I know I read the rule on the menu! And as they put too much rice, I had to take off half of it. And I was planning to eat the leftover rice with other side dishes. However, the server reinforced the policy on leftovers while I was eating food. I DO KNOW! From that moment on, I couldn’t enjoy my dinner because of the stupid pressure! The server said “it’s a common sense to charge fee for the leftover in ayce place.” Well, I didn’t even have leftovers, but he assumed I would have. Also, their sushi is “NOT A COMMON SENSE” for me. It feels like giving you a tiny hamburger patty with 4 buns. And they say it’s AYCE! I couldn’t even enjoy it because of that stupid amount of rice. The sashimi is just the same tiny piece that goes on top of rice for nigiri and they limit 5 pcs per person to order it. What an unpleasant experience. I’m a big sushi fan, but this is not a place to go! I have been tons of the sushi places all over the world including places in Japan. But they make sushi without COMMON SENSE. Also, stupid pressure from the server made my experience terrible. The worst service and food. Never going back again. Don’t waste your...
