I opted to stay here instead of staying at the Marriott downtown Charleston for a conference being held there. I am so glad I did! Yes I did have to make a 15 minute drive in the morning and and evening, but it was worth it.
Breakfast is amazing and it is different everyday. Abby one of the staff members makes fresh made dishes. While I was there, I had eggs, quiche, grits, hashbrounds, and other casseroles in addition to fresh fruit (good assortment with kiwi and not just filler melon), baked goods (the home made muffins are amazing), and I absolutely loved the yogurt parfaits (again made in house). I heard someone was annoyed that they asked for "homework" and wanted them to fill out a list of what they wanted for breakfast. I did not have to do such "homework." However in the defense of this great establishment - the reason you may be asked to fill out a form for breakfast is so that the Abby or whoever else is making breakfast can make sure to make you something that you actually like! Damn is that not good hospitality or what. Apparently they only do that when they aren't as many people and they want to guarantee they are cooking the right dishes and it is not wasted. If filling out a form to get exactly the food you like is too much....well you have bigger problems. Do you go to a restaurant and expect waiters to read your mind too?!
Anyways they stored both of my big paddle boards in their garage no problem. I had access to them whenever I wanted. They didn't even hesitate or complain about the inconvenience that I know my boards caused for them. It just wanted a big deal.
The rooms are high quality and clean. The balconies are big and fabulous. I love laying out here and working or eating breakfast. The towels and robes are top notch. I visited in the summer, but I would love to come back in the winter and use the fireplace.
Happy Hour is great! Wine, Folly punch and beer. My only wish is for a better beer selection, but then I recognize that I am a beer snob and love craft beer. They had bud light and yingling. They also served food at happy hour. Every day was different food and included something that was home made from one of the staff members kitchen. Seriously good food.
Good parking situation. I walked to the beach once with my board and it was easy. Beach nearby does have some street parking if you time it right. They have golf carts and will take you to and from the beach.
If you want to go somewhere and feel like you are not only at home, but at home with people willing to take care of you and make sure you are happy (which makes it better than home, right?) ... then you should stay either here or their sister property, Regatta Inn. I went to that property to go paddle boarding and for a happy hour one night. They have a better view for sunsets. Everyone on this staff is great. Met the owner and he...
Read moreI noticed many 5 star ratings for this facility, so we all have different expectations. Mine are based upon having stayed in dozens of B&B’s across the nation. They are usually quaint, nice furniture, and above all the hosts can't do enough for you. I found the people who worked here to be hospitable, but not like a typical B&B owner. Only 3 guest rooms were being utilized but they still pre-prepared a buffet style breakfast. Food was Luke warm, links were undercooked, etc. I felt a detachment with some of the staff and although I was only there 2 nights, every day and night there were different people working. I had to ask the name of every one of them. They did not introduce themselves, I had to make the introduction, ask their name, and what their function was. So not the personal experience I was expecting. The room was large and clean, but lacking. The "Fireplace"was a free standing heating unit with a glassed enclosure. We needed A/C and there is no control for the room, so the room was warm, and uncomfortable for someone like me who likes a cool room to sleep. The "furniture" was a couch with a complete slip cover, and far from comfortable. The two chairs were steel, no cushions. You heard me right. Steel chairs inside. The most comfortable place was outside, on the porch. That had a very nice set of comfortable chairs with table, with an accompanying chaise lounge. And the bed was fine, nice linens and comfortable mattress. Lighting was harsh, as they are not using soft white bulbs in the lamps, with the exception of one small lamp next to the couch. There was recessed lighting in the ceiling but again no dimmer. Staff training, different furniture, controlled A/C, an actual fireplace, dimmable lighting and some other minor changes would make a big difference. So it was a mixed bag. Not what I expected, so I will not be going back. It’s a well kept facility, and for some may fit the bill,...
Read more2-star inside, 4-star outside is how I would describe our stay. Outside - the grounds are very nice and well maintained. The shuttle service was extremely convenient and the location was very close to the Main Street attractions. The main complaint would be the shuttle drop off is at a public access and the main hotel in town which made it VERY crowded and not the most “relaxing”. Inside - I’m honestly surprised with all the positive reviews. Frankly, our expectations, particularly during a pandemic, would be for these rooms to feel pristine. We found them to be mediocre and not the cleanest. The carpets felt a little dingy, the furniture was extremely worn with clear tears on them, and there were visible smudges on things like the mirrors where you could see they had been cleaned but at around 90%. The bed was extremely uncomfortable with what felt like a pull out couch mattress (high at the headboard, sags in the middle) and bring your own pillows. At breakfast we found two bagels with mold, which the staff replaced, however you could clearly tell they were frozen and had just been microwaved to warm. The marsh view was nice, however the entire top middle section of the screened inn porch was missing which made it unusable due to the mosquitos and bugs from the marsh. I mentioned this to the staff at check-in and the young lady didn’t seem to care or know that was done. We found the staff to simply be someone at a desk and there to drive the shuttle. There was no outward effort on making you feel special or welcome, which again is extremely disheartening during a time when people aren’t possibly the most comfortable with traveling. We’ve stayed in several bed and breakfasts over the years and generally love the quaint charm and hospitality. We didn’t feel like we got either of those...
