We made reservations to stay at a Sleep Inn in Fredericksburg, VA. We arrived there at 4:15. A couple from Quebec was already checking in when we got there. They wanted two connecting rooms. The desk lady had no idea which rooms connected. She called out a young girl to look at a diagram of the rooms. Apparently they couldn’t figure it out so they took off together, must be to look at rooms. They returned and she finally got the couple checked in. By now it is 4:45 and I’ve been standing there with my phone opened to my reservation. We finally get assigned room 110. We go in and unpack our stuff. Room wasn’t very great, but oh well just one night. While sitting in the bed I noticed this weird bug crawling across my nightstand. Tried to get it, but in ran down the back. Then a bunch of jumping started in the room above us. Plus you could hear the tv through the wall next door. Then the bug comes out again. Enough is enough. I go down to the desk and demand a new room. After she finishes checking in the new guest, she assigns us to 118. We go and pack up our stuff and move into 118. We unpack there. We decide to go out and find something for dinner. Before leaving I decided to use the bathroom. When I flushed the toilet, a large stream of water started coming of tank out onto the floor. So we go back to the desk and tell her we needed another room. Then we had to wait for her to finish checking in another guest. Now we are given #234. We move everything in there. First thing I do is go flush the toilet. Yup, you guessed it, that one leaks also. Now back to the desk where once again we have to wait for another guest to be checked in. Now she assigned us to 218. We now move into this room, where lo and behold the toilet didn’t leak and there weren’t any bugs. However, the desk lamp was missing and there wasn’t any Kleenex. Two of the rooms we were put in were missing the the grab bar in the shower. Also there was someone smoking in the hall and this is a non-smoking hotel. The Choice Hotel website listed this hotel as having a hot breakfast. The breakfast here is only continental. By now it is 7:30 pm and too late for me to eat a meal. Dinner consisted of a package of...

Read moreThe property is in a decent area; walking distance to restaurants, and stores. Unfortunately, there is construction next door to the hotel which does cause noise within the rooms. The back door has the ability give customers keycard access to the hotel, however, the mechanism isn't functioning. As a result, the door is either propped open by customers, or locked and customers must go around the building to gain entry.
The main problem I had with the hotel was regarding a lack of basic understanding of ADA law. The law is quite clear, you cannot ask for documentation or proof of a service dog's certification. Unfortunately, staff refused to allow me to explain the law. So, here it is: What questions can a covered entity's employees ask to determine if a dog is a service animal? A. In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, staff may ask only two specific questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person's disability.
My son has a legitimate service dog. He needs this dog for his disabilities and his dog wears a vest which clearly depicts her as a Service Dog. Upon entry to the hotel a staff member asked for the dog's certification. I tried to explain the ADA law to her. She demanded proof. My son who didn't want any problems, presented the employee with the certification which us carried in his dog's vest. The employee then photocopied the training certificate to, as she said, "prove to staff the dog is a service dog." Uh, yeah, the vest already does that.
I realize people have fake service dogs, but that doesn't allow a company to break the law. I don't mind teaching people about the law of service dogs. I don't even mind explaining what this amazing dog does for my son. But a company is not allowed to violate ADA law. I'm sorry. Do better, Sleep Inn and train...
