I had a great time at the Belvedere Inn in Hannibal, Missouri. I checked out their website and picked my room based on the descriptions. The Jenny Joseph room caught my eye because it’s named after a former owner’s wife, which intrigued me. As a big book lover, I was curious since I hadn’t heard of Jenny Joseph before. Hannibal is such a charming and historic place, and being there felt like a connection to the legendary author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. After reading about the room, I decided to look up Jenny Joseph and found out she was a well-known poet from the UK, famous for her poem "Warning." It made me think about how that poem might have inspired The Red Hat Society, but that’s a different topic. I was thrilled to stay in a room named after her! When I got back to the B&B, the owner greeted us and handed over the key. I excitedly told my partner, "Papi, this room is named after Jenny Joseph, a talented poet!" The owner then shared that the rooms Jenny and Sallie were named after slaves, and the story about Sally being one of Twain’s slaves lost to gambling debts made me feel uneasy. It seemed a bit off, especially since the website had a different narrative. Why name a room after a white poet when there’s a story about a slave? It left me puzzled.

This is a very nice B&B. The location is perfect--a quiet neighborhood that's an easy walk to the historic area. Be sure to read through the inn's website before you go. Every B&B is different, and the website is very clear about what your experience here will be. The inn has been lovingly restored. Pat's husband Bob Yapp is a historic restoration expert--he once hosted a show on PBS and he does hosts a shore excursion for river cruise ships that stop in Hannibal. If you're lucky enough to meet him, you'll learn a lot. We stayed in the Albert Lamb room, which has one king bed and an enormous shower. We really appreciated the extra shelves for toiletries in the bathroom and the power point in the bedroom--features often missing in B&Bs. The rooms do not have individual temperature controls, but there's a ceiling fan and we were comfortable. Coffee is available at 7 AM, and there are bathrobes so you can run down and grab that first cup. Breakfast is served at 9 AM family style. There's one hot dish plus a couple of sides such as muffins and sausages. I wish there was a simple grab-and-go option (cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt) for those who want an earlier start and/or a lighter meal. Altogether we had a lovely stay and recommend the Belvedere Inn.

Our Supper Club recently stayed at The Belvedere Inn for a one-night theatre get away. Pat and Bob Yapp, the inn hosts, instantly made us feel right at home. Within moments of starting the introductory tour of the inn we were all gathered around the kitchen island sharing stories and laughing like old friends. I casually mentioned that we planned to dine at LaBinnah Bistro before going to the theatre and in a split-second Pat was on the phone arranging for a table to accommodate our group. The Belvedere Inn is an exquisite and extensively restored 1859 Italianate Mansion in the heart of Hannibal, Missouri only a few blocks from Hannibal’s Historic Downtown. Our group of eight took over the inn for the night, booking every room. We stayed in the Jennie Joseph Room, named for the wife of the third owner of the house. The iron queen sized bed was extra comfy with crisp linens, a down comforter plus down pillows. The fully appointed spa-like spacious bath with subway tiled shower exceeded our expectations. Fresh brewed strong coffee was available starting at 7 AM for the early risers to enjoy on the front porch. Pat lovingly prepared & served a savory breakfast quiche made with fresh cut herbs from her garden & locally sourced farm to table ingredients from their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). A big thank you to Pat and Bob for making our stay so memorable. We will most certainly be coming back for another stay at The Belvedere Inn, if Pat & Bob...

Pat and Bob are tremendously gracious and gregarious hosts with a genuine desire to see all of their guests are comfortable while visiting their cozy home. Prior to my arrival, I let Pat know that I have some dietary restrictions due to a health condition and asked if I there was a refrigerator to store food brought from home. She said they have a kitchenette in Scoundrels - the addition beside the Belvedere Inn - and put me in Salli's room. Then she must have done some homework and found suitable recipes because every morning she had a fresh, tasty breakfast prepared just for me. The room was actually one of the (or maybe THE) oldest wooden structure in Hannibal and was restored and appointed appropriately with a handmade Jenny Lind style double bed stacked with a plush mattress and lofty feather and down-alternative pillows. There was a small closet with a fluffy terry robe and extra linens, a beautiful antique dresser and wash stand for additional storage, and a full bath. ||I really enjoyed the laid-back evenings on the back porch talking with Bob, Pat, and the other guests while petting the family dogs, Gus the Golden Retriever and Gomer the Great Pyrenees. I felt like I was part of a big family there, and I look forward to returning soon. Maybe I will see you there and we can have a...

We stayed at the Belvedere Inn for one night celebrating an anniversary. This was our first experience with a B&B and we could not be more happy with our choice. The Inn overall is gorgeous and inviting. There is a sitting room with a gas fireplace providing a great place to hang out and a wonderful ambiance. Just behind the sitting room is a pool table open for play. This was very enjoyable and a great place to spend time. We stayed in the Jennie Joseph room. Although it was the smallest of the room options, it was perfect for a couple and for our one night stay. It was beautifully decorated and had a gorgeous tiled bathroom with a stand up shower big enough for two. The bedding and pillows were very comfortable. The hostess Pat was absolutely delightful. She was inviting and sociable. She is great at reading whether guests want privacy, or if they care to socialize. She prepared an absolutely delicious and well thought out breakfast during our stay. The location of this B&B is also great. It is just 4 blocks from Main St. and all of the tourist attractions there. By Pat's recommendation, we had a spectacular dinner at La Binnah Bistro, just around the corner. Overall our experience was amazing and we sincerely plan on staying at this location during any future visits...
