After my booking I received an email, this was the first thing that was written. "The Wild Ginger Hotel is an old, Hawaiian-style Hotel and not a luxury resort. The building is full of history, character and aloha. It is truly a unique Hawaiian experience, and we are excited to share it with you." I'm going to break this down for you. Old Hawaiian-style Hotel - this means dilapidated single wall construction with warped floor boards, slanted hallways, no outlet covers, and rusty tin roof that probably leaks (I wouldn't know as they jammed me in the basement room under the stairs). The building is full of history, character and aloha - this means you'll get to find remnants of previous guests in your room in the form of about 15 different hairs on the floor. Don't worry if you're traveling by yourself, you won't be alone. You'll be graced by the presence of spiders in the shower, around the windows as well as fruit flies all over the bathroom and towels. A note is provided in the room on how to activate the hot water, you're supposed to leave the sink and shower faucet on simultaneously and wait.....I waited and waited over 20 minutes. The hot water never came, it wasn't even warm. It is truly a unique Hawaiian experience - this means getting to experience how the poorest of the poor live in Hawaii, in brokedown bug infested crackshacks with no hot water. My advice spent $10 extra and stay anywhere else. I paid $137 after taxes an fees which was supposedly a heavily discounted price - Not Worth It! I've spent a 10th of that in Third World Countries that were cleaner and less rundown. You'd be better off sleeping in a park and showering at the beach, there'd still be bugs and a cold shower but at least you'd have saved your money. STEER CLEAR! I brought up my concerns and complaints to management, they told me they'd look into it. It's been 3 weeks and I haven't heard anything so my review is posted. HEED THE WARNINGS.

This is a hostel at best, use of the word “hotel” is not only inaccurate, but outright misleading and fraudulent. This “hotel” is run down and unsafe and not only needs to be removed from booking systems but shut down. The area this place is in felt unsafe, and we were worried about our car being left in the parking lot. After booking we received a email stating: 1. The Wild Ginger Inn is an old, Hawaiian-style Hotel and not a luxury resort. The building is full of history, character and aloha. It is truly a unique Hawaiian experience and we are excited to share it with you. While I was not expecting a luxury resort, this “Hawaiian style hotel” that is branded “it has history and built in 1911” is exactly what your getting.. a place that has been allowed to continue business with nothing being renovated or kept up to safety code since 1911. The stairs were shot (was surprised luggage didn’t go through them) The gardens are overgrown and decrepit. The room had no fire smoke alarm and a bathroom door that either would not shut or if slammed closed you need the help of someone to kick it open or be trapped in the bathroom that had no hot water… The bed had 1 top sheet and no blanket to keep warm and the noise of other guests that had also been scammed by booking this place filled the hallway. The photos do not match the reality of what this place actually is. This place needs to be shut down and reported. DO NOT STAY HERE..

This place is DISGUSTING. The building literally looks like it should be condemned. The photos online are not accurate and must be from 30 years ago. Our room was full of spiders and mold. The shower floor and walls were covered in mold, mold in the bedroom. I counted at least a dozen spiders crawling on the wall within seconds of walking into the room. My room didn’t even look like the photos and I felt like I needed a shower just standing in there. I’ve stayed in hostels in third world countries that were cleaner than this place. There also isn’t even a proper working door lock on the room. We immediately went back up to the front desk, explained the situation and that we couldn’t stay in that room. I asked for a refund and the girl at the front desk told me she needed to contact the owner to ask who was not on site. I called back two hours later, was told they hadn’t heard back. Went back the next morning, another girl at the front desk said she would call the owner, she walked away and came back telling me the owner would not give me my money back. I asked to speak to him and she said that he would not take my call! DO NOT STAY HERE! This place is a literal scam set up to rip people off. Their other reviews must be fake. I noticed now several other people are making similar complaints. Stay away from this hell hole.

If I could give this place -10 stars I would. There was so much wrong with my experience at this this hotel I don't know where to begin. So I will just start with the con artist that runs the place. I booked through Expedia four days before I arrived. When the time came for me to check in, the owner told me that Expedia never infomed them of my reservation and I would have to buy two rooms to accommodate my family, adding an additional 200 to my booking price. Unable to find comfort with that solution. I contacted Expedia, who after speaking with the owner informed me that the owner had magically located my reservation and could give me the second room at no charge. However, when I arrived to check in for the second time I was told that I still would have to pay for the second room. Clearly this man wasn't above lying to stay in Expedia's good graces. So, accepting this as a last resort I paid the extra $200. As soon as "Appoved " flashed across the card reader. The owner says. "Oh you know its termite breeding season right?"  "No" I relpy "How would I know that." He continues by informing me that the hotel is under a strict "black out" policy and guest at the hotel may not turn on the lights in the rooms until 8pm because termites will mate in the room leave behind feces and it would be a mess. Now allow me to touch on the condition of the property it is old and run down and honestly if you judged this book by its cover you'd be spot on it's absolutely deplorable and should be condemned. When the owner was showing me to my room I noticed a slant in the floor. Yes, the property is leaning. When we arrived at the room my family and I would be staying in we where greeted at the door by two dead roaches that where the size of my thumb. The owner noticed the expression on my face and said " Don't worry those are tree roaches not sewer roaches." As if there's difference in my opinion. A roach is a roach and whether it comes from a sewer or a tree I don't deal with them. That was the last straw. There was no way I was going to subject my family to such flith. Needless to say we checked out not even 30 mins after checking in and with the help of Expedia we eventually where able to find an acceptable room. If you have ANY standards at all, this is not the place for you. PLEASE DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE POSTIVE REVIEWS AS I WAS, IN MY EXPERIENCE THEY...

Listen, I’ve stayed in my fair share of sketchy spots while solo-traveling for work around the islands, but this one really took the creepy cake. The photos online were giving tropical charm. Don’t get bamboozled like I did.

I’m a woman in my 20s, used to traveling alone and rolling with the punches. But walking into my room that first night felt like I had just lost a bet with the universe. It looked nothing like the pictures. And to set the mood, there was a woman screaming somewhere in the distance like she was in a slasher film. Cozy, right? My neighbors weren’t any better—shoutout to the couple next door who treated me to their full-volume relationship meltdown. Nothing like a screaming match to lull you to sleep.

Oh, and I’m pretty sure they worked there. So… professionalism? Never heard of her.

I almost left after night one, but thanks to volcano tourists, I had no choice but to tough it out. Then came the shower saga.

Picture this: it’s 4:30 AM, I’m half-asleep and just trying to feel clean before going to work all day. I turn on the water in my room—ice cold. Like, glacier-runoff cold. I waited five minutes hoping for warmth. Nope. So I gather my shower gear like I’m back in a college dorm and head to the lobby showers.

Plot twist: the lobby bathroom light is out. No big deal, just showering in the dark with a phone flashlight while hoping I don’t audition for a true crime podcast. Oh, and the lock on the door? Useless. I MacGyvered a table in front of it like that was going to stop anyone. Took the fastest, most paranoid shower of my life but hey the water was hot. I can respect keeping old buildings functional but come on.

The whole stay had me on edge. I felt like I was waiting for someone to break down my door. You can hear everything in Hawai’i buildings in general—like, I now know my upstairs neighbor’s favorite karaoke songs and that they like to redecorate at 10 PM. Also, every towel I got was stained, which was just chef’s kiss on the whole experience.

To be fair, housekeeping did a solid job making my bed and taking out trash. And front desk was lovely with a smooth check in. But honestly, a fresh towel and a smile can only go so far when the rest of the place feels like a survival challenge.

Bottom line: If you’re a young woman traveling solo—run, don’t walk, to literally...

Absolutely Disgusting – Should Be Shut Down

This place isn’t just the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at — it’s the worst building I’ve ever stepped foot in, period. Calling it a "hotel" is an insult to every decent place of lodging on Earth. I paid $288 for two nights, and here’s the worst part: I didn’t even stay a single night. That’s right — I walked in, saw the nightmare I had paid for, and walked right back out within 10 minutes.

The room was an absolute disgrace. A cramped, suffocating box that barely fit the bed. The window was filthy, covered in grime like it hadn’t been touched in years. The door lock was rusted and looked like it would fall off with a strong breeze — zero sense of security. The towels looked like they’d been dragged out of a swamp and forgotten for a decade — stained, crusty, and smelled awful.

Despite having lived in Oahu for three years and being fully aware of tropical weather and bugs, I was disgusted to find a mosquito filled with someone else’s blood flying around the room. That’s not “tropical weather” — that’s unsanitary and potentially dangerous. When I brought it up to the front desk, they dismissed it like it was nothing. Unbelievable.

The room wasn’t sealed properly, the walls were paper-thin — I could clearly hear every word from the next room and every car passing by on the road. It was like trying to sleep in a cardboard box on the sidewalk. I immediately left and booked another hotel just down the road for $10 more and had a completely different experience — clean, professional, and actually worth the money. Meanwhile, this place refused to refund a single cent, even though I never spent the night. I essentially threw away $288 to be traumatized for ten minutes.

To make matters worse, they called me after I left and tried to offer me a “suite” as some kind of compensation. Are you kidding? After seeing that disaster of a room, there’s no way I would ever spend a single minute in that place again.

If I could give this dump zero stars, I would. This place should be investigated, shut down, and scrubbed off the face of the internet. Avoid...
