Austin in the bar was amazing, caring, friendly and attentive. "Casey" (sp), also at the bar, very nice as well. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The hotel is very overpriced and will not book here again nor recommend it. Our room was not "cleaned" until our very last day (spent 3 nights there) until another staff member from another dept. expressed our concerns. Then, on the last night when it was "serviced", there was no extra toilet paper or kleenex to be found. We had to go find our own. The glass tables on the ledge next to the bedsides, were not wiped down --- thus glass marks were still there. The prescription container of pills I had by the bedside were "taken" during the time the room was "cleaned" on our last night. When we reported this to the front desk (using our cell phones since the room phone was dead) the staff did not seemed that concerned nor did they offer an apology about any of the above. They did look for my pill container and finally found it and brought it to the room after me re-emphasizing the seriousness of this situation of having to take my pills. Rooms do not seem to be checked by a supervisor. Even our magnifying mirror in the bathroom had a screw missing. There was no soap or dispenser for soap by the bathroom sink. The products in the showers are very hard to dispense any liquids out. (Be sure to take your own bath products). We got a roll-in shower and during showers, the water gets all over the floor outside of the shower which might be due to the shower curtain being so short.
The general state of cleanliness and customer service is lacking (except for Austin at the bar). The hallways are very dark and dimly lit, making it hard to see. The room we were given was extremely dark with minimal lighting, even with the curtains open. (The rooms you see online are apparently in another area as they appear much brighter). We did not complain immediately about all the above as overall, as the staff seemed aloof and not very interested in customer service. We did not valet park as we think $40 per night is extreme, even in that area (website says $29/night) so we parked in the garage across the street for $4/night. When my husband would come to the driveway in front of the hotel to pick me up (I have some disabilities), none of the valet staff stopped talking to each other to open either one of our doors.
One morning when went to the bar (great Austin again!) to get coffee, Austin arranged it all on a tray so it could be brought to the room. When we were finished, we were going to see if we could find someone in the hallway to take it, and a "supervisor" person (who happened to be there) took it and proceeded to lay in beside our door, where it sat for many more hours before being picked up.
We still wonder why my prescription pill dispenser was "removed" as it was still apparent we were still in the room - suitcases, hanging clothes, shoes, etc in plain site. If I had been a diabetic or had another serious condition(which I mentioned to the front desk when calling to report this), this could have been a VERY serious situation. I am grateful they did not blow us off and wait until the morning to check it out. Again..........no apologies were ever given by the staff for their lack of customer service and attention to detail. (Had our room been cleaned daily as we expected, I would have locked my pill dispenser in the safe, but since the room had not ever been touched, the dispenser was left at bedside). We plan on returning to HSV in November to visit family again, but will stay elsewhere. If we are in the area, we would probably drop in to see Austin (if he is still there) to say hello and have a drink at the bar.
One thing: thank you for allowing us to check in earlier than the posted...
Read moreThe room greeted us with our name on the TV, which was a nice touch. It was an extremely clean room and comfortable beds. The furnishings were very modern. The shower was great and they offered adequate towels for a family of 4.
Mostly, the room just felt clean. It felt like I could have rolled around on the floor without worry. The hotel has a good sanitizing routine that they advertise and listing what they do.
Issue time: apparently the rooms are going through some upgrades and some of the staff don't know much about what is going on with their TVs. They are FireTV sticks, which isn't an issue but they only give you the Fire remote, not the TV's remote. If you wanted to hook up a game system, you have to unplug the existing HDMI from their box and plug it into whatever console you wanted as there's no way to switch the TVs inputs.
Two of our power outlets weren't working, but we were told that was due to the upgrades likely missing plugging in that side of the bed. The beds had USB plugs at their nightstands, and they were very convenient to use. The one person that didn't have theirs working was one of the only ones that needed it, hehe. It wasn't that big a deal, just examples of how the modernization of the hotel chain was causing a bit of confusion.
There was no lockbox despite room instructions telling us to use it.
My biggest complaint (still rather minor all things considered) was that the fridge was tiny. We had some leftover cheesecake from visiting the a great diner/cafe place, and this wasn't a ton of cakes or anything, but the fridge couldn't fit a standard take-out container, let alone 3. It was just too shallow. We ended up getting takeout containers from the hotel restaurant that did fit (barely).
There was no microwave, but there was a Keurig. So no way of brewing a pot, but you could brew individual cups. So there was no way to get warm water to drink other than the sink faucet as the Keurig, even without a kcup, was still spitting out mild coffee water (evidence that it's not purged each time, a common thing among Keurig owners and probably doubly so for hotel chains).
Parking was across the street and required payment as there was no free parking for the hotel. It was downtown, and surprisingly the parking was among the cheapest I'd ever seen. Fifty cents an hour, maximum of $4, extra $2 for overnight parking if you came in late. The hotel had valet parking for $25 extra.
A ton of restaurants and cafes were within...
Read moreWhile the setting of the hotel in quaint downtown Huntsville was picturesque had a number of issues that were unacceptable… it was our 40th anniv and when booking the hotel the diamond desk at Hilton convinced me that this was one of their top hotels… booked 3 nights for a memorable anniversary. with that said we drove 2 hrs from TN stopped for supper and took the leftovers and checked in. While the decor in the hotel was nice the following items squashed the mood … when we entered the room everything appeared micro in size for the value that they were had to give for the room.
