Weeden House Museum and Garden — Attraction in Huntsville

This is a museum in the private home of artist and poet (Maria) Howard Weeden. The cost is $5 and the tour is about an hour long. I found it to be a fascinating glimpse into not only Weeden's life and art, but also the early history of Huntsville and North Alabama. Like many private museums, Weeden house has had to branch out to make ends meet so they rent the place out as an event venue as well. This means that Lynn, their lone employee is stretched rather thin as tour guide, event coordinator, curator and hostess so you should make an appointment for the guided tour. Nevertheless, she was as gracious and informative a hostess as you could wish for. Word of caution- there are stairs so if you have mobility issues you may miss the upstairs part...

Overview of the history what starts with the fact that the house was built the same year,1819, when Alabama became a State. The house was the home of the painter & poet Maria Howard Weeden. Her painting are amazing. Hard to believe what she was able to do with tiny number of hairs as a brush. Unbelievable precise portraits of African American ordinary residence of Huntsville at that time leave you impresion that they like to communicate with you. This is my favorite history tour in Huntsville. It combines history and art. The antebellum house is a gem of interesting preserved features that make you feel like you're stepping back in time. It was also fascinating to see the art and hear about the life of a forgotten Alabama female artist. I would say more, but I don't want to spoil the fun of finding out about her subjects and how she worked.
