Quick synopsis...the Astro has a very nice family running it, our two rooms (big family) were incredibly clean and very comfortable, the value is perfect, the location is very convenient, and the area is safe although it may not feel that way to the frequent suburban hotel chain user.||||LOCATION / SAFETY||||Let's start with location since others have called it out as a bad part of town (MarieW1965) and not safe. Like others, when we first arrived late on a Friday night, we were uneasy about how things looked. You have to bury your biases of staying in a hotel chain that was built in the last ten years. The location is PERFECTLY SAFE and, if you want the local experience, the location is VERY CONVENIENT.||||The Astro is in the heart of the original downtown. 1 block off of Main Street. 4 blocks from the true center. Like most big Small Towns, the center of commerce has shifted over by Walmart and away from downtown. Over by the Walmart (about 10 minutes away), it will look like the suburban cookie-cutter that some of the other reviewers may have been seeking.||||When we arrived, there were people sitting outside on the stairs, at the pool, etc., drinking beer and talking. But the weather was beautiful and a motel has no lobby for that beer and chat. The parking lot is the lobby and the people were incredibly nice and interesting if you take the time to chat.||||The downtown area did seem abandoned, but that's because it was 9pm and most of the businesses are family-run. They closed about 5-6pm.||||LOCATION / CONVENIENCE||||If you are looking for that local feel, the Astro's location gives that to you. Our highlights included Daylight Donuts (one block away, great donuts), the Fox Theatre (see other review...but incredible if you get the chance), the Anchor Inn (really good Mexican food), and Fraese's Drug & Soda Fountain (great comfort food).||||The Cosmosphere, one of our reasons for going to Hutchinson, was only 5 minutes away.||||Also nearby are the downtown parks, one with a water play area. We also happened to be in town during the Hutchinson BBQ competition which was held downtown as well.||||THE MOTEL||||The rooms were very, VERY clean. This is our most important criteria for a hotel and Astro Motel passed easily. Our rooms really were cleaner than we find at the chains.||||The rooms were also spacious enough. Essentially what you expect. We had two rooms, one with two doubles and one with two queens, and both were very comfortable.||||Our two rooms were a little different. The one with the double beds was finished/decorated a little nicer (maybe more recently updated?) and the queen room was a little bigger and had a DVD player (which my boys liked having).||||Our first floor room was the only one with any issues:||1. the door did not latch automatically, so we almost left for our sightseeing with the room open and unlocked, and||2. being a motel, the parking was next to the rooms, and many of the guests left early in the morning so we had the noise of cars and people (fine for me, but my wife is a light sleeper)||||There is also a pool at the Astro, but we did not use it during this trip.||||The Astro does offer a free continental breakfast, but it is only served 6-8am which is too early for our family. Since we didn't use it, I can't review that part, but we felt the free breakfast wasn't key to the overall value of the Astro anyway.||||OVERALL VALUE||||At the prices we paid, we were able to get two rooms for our family for the same price as one room at the chains. THIS WAS HUGE. More comfort. More fun for the family.||||If the rooms were more expensive, we would likely have stayed at a chain hotel instead. When we go back to Hutchinson, though, we know that Astro Motel offers great value, a cleaner room, and...
Read moreTL;DR: Exceptional value! A clean, comfortable bed, everything working, and breakfast too. Full story: I have had to drive from NM to MN and back multiple times in the past few years, and each time I have stopped in a different small town in Kansas, about mid-way, to sleep for the night; always for under $60. As you might expect, many of these stays have been rather dismal. With that as my comparison group, this stay was by far the best: a clean, comfortable bed, everything working, good wifi, no bad smells, a personable host (even told me about local attractions), and a passable breakfast included (really, I could not believe it)! Yes, at this price point you expect cosmetic imperfections, and there were some, but the owner is working hard to improve the place and is being smart about what to focus on. Everything I needed worked well and was clean. The bed and pillows were new, clean, and comfortable, and I slept well (though I am used to urban life and sleep soundly through trains and traffic, especially after a long day on the road). The main challenges for this place are its location, with a pawn shop and McDonalds as neighbors (yeah, that part of town), and some of the clientele (cheap rooms bring all kinds, including me). On the up side most folks staying there were friendly, you can walk to a nifty Mexican restaurant (Celayanse), and there is a Dairy Queen just down the alley. While it may be lacking in curb appeal, this inn has a good core and is a good place to stay; an exceptional place to stay at the price I paid. Follow up: Having stayed here a few times now, I'll add that there is usually one thing or another that's not as clean as I might hope for (usually the sink), and that while breakfast is ostensibly 7am-9am the timing is malleable and if you want to count on it I recommend asking about it the night before. But it's still the best deal around, which is why I stayed here multiple times after the first, as opposed to the other places I tried, which were one-and-done. The pictures they advertise with are honest pictures of the real rooms, not shots of a "model" room that nobody is actually...
Read moreI recommend this place 100% it feels soooo homey, you can tell it’s taken care of with a lot of love. Chris is the owner and he was so helpful ! He hooked us up, we needed something last minute because we were coming from a horrible hotel before and we needed to get out of that ASAP and we called Coratel Inn and Chris gave me the prices over the phone, we weren’t at his hotel just yet and he said he would wait for us, and he held the room for us. We needed 3 rooms, 2 with 2 queen beds and 1 with 1 queen bed and he didn’t have the 1 room with 1 queen so he offered us a king bed for the price of the queen ! He was so sweet and helpful and very genuine ! Everything in the room worked perfectly! We left for a couple of hours to an event and when we came back our trash was replaced, everything was clean. We even asked him if it would be okay to do a late check out at 12 ok instead of 11 and he has no problem with it. The price was amazing !!! And just Very very good service !!!! Loved it here ! Definitely...
