TLDR: Loud and too bright. We spent two nights over Labor Day weekend at Hotel Burg, and my overall impression is that whoever owns/runs the hotel either doesn't have a ton of experience in the field, or made a lot of hasty/cost-cutting decisions in an attempt to save time and money.
Corners were clearly cut in the construction of the hotel as you can hear EVERY SINGLE NOISE in the entire hotel. This means, doors opening and closing in the hallway and floors above, chairs moving, people walking around in the rooms, nearby bars/restaurants dumping their glass recycling at 3am, conversations in the room next to you, every single car being pulled out of the valet lot all night long (regardless of engine size), and ALL THE DOGS running around and barking (because the hotel allows dogs.)
There are a handful of sensor/monitor/alarms on the ceiling that emit bright blue lights making it difficult to sleep (see photo.) This could probably be remedied by tape or swapping out units, but it's evident no one actually bothered to sleep in the rooms before letting the public in.
Our room had the aircon unit pointing directly at the head of one of the beds, rendering that bed nearly useless as it blasts cold air on and off throughout the night (meanwhile, the other bed would get fairly warm in between cooling cycles.) Again, seems like no thought out the sleeping situation when installing the unit.
Vanity kits are not provided in the room, which seems like a miss for a hotel trying to pass as "luxury." I needed a shower cap and when I initially asked at the front desk, they told us they didn't have any. A few minutes later, someone came to our room with one, but having to ask for basics definitely takes away from the experience.
The floor in the shower is also extremely slippery when wet. We're in our 40s and almost fell several times. I would imagine older folks, folks with mobility issues, or littles not yet sturdy on their feet may risk serious injury. (I would also like to note that we travel pretty extensively and this is an issue we seldom, if ever, encounter anywhere else - that is to say, I don't think we're super sensitive to slippery tile)
Bed linens are pretty itchy, don't seem to be quality percale. Toilet paper is also on the thin side for a "luxury" hotel
No phone in the room, not pamphlets listing/explaining hotel amenities. Do they offer room service? Is there a rooftop? A gym? What lounge areas are available to guests? What benefit is there to joining the membership? I have NO IDEA because no one talked to us about anything. We also were not told that the way to contact the front desk was via text - I learned about it by reading someone else's review.
Honestly the only "pro" to our stay was that the staff was pleasant, and went above and beyond, engaging our 7 yr old son -- an act I never expect of anyone outside a children's-based business, and so really appreciate as an "extra." The location is also great - within easy walking distance...
Read moreWe stayed at Hotel Burg for our anniversary a couple of nights ago. Overall, it's a really nice hotel in an amazing location downtown and the rooms and amenities are great. For the price you pay for a room here (we booked a rooftop suite), the room is worth it, the service definitely isn't. It may just be a new hotel working out the kinks with staffing and service, but I feel like they need to continue improving if they're going to charge $500-$700/night.
When we checked in, the staff were great, but oddly sitting at desks chilling behind laptops. It was pretty laid back and they seemed like college kids hanging out, not professional front desk staff. We got a couple of free drink tickets for booking while they're newly opening the hotel, which was really nice. We tried out the rooftop bar and the drinks and setting were great. We asked for a 1-hour late checkout since we arrived pretty late, and they were accommodating and said no problem. Overall the room was incredible and we slept great. We loved the rooftop deck and fireplace.
The next morning, while walking to Goosecup for coffee, we just stopped in with the front desk staff to confirm a noon checkout and the girl seemed to be training someone. The trainee didn't speak or even recognize anyone's presence and the main front desk girl was pretty rude and inconvenienced. She made it seem like we were an annoyance and she'd reconsider whether we could check out at noon. She didn't extend our room keys, so when we came back to head up to the room, our keys didn't work in the elevator. We had to wait 10 minutes while she used a poor system on her laptop to re-key the cards. She also waited to fix our keys while she chatted with someone who arrived for a conference going on that day. It seems like the front desk are so new to this that they don't know to make sure room keys are working or notes are in the system so all staff know what's going on. When we were packing to check out, the housekeeping staff came pounding on the door to the room (even though it wasn't noon yet). When we went to get our car, we waited for the valet who was probably vaping around the corner (where we could see our car).
Overall, the room and hotel were great, but the staff interactions and valet felt like we were staying at $150/night hotel. They aren't trained well enough and they seem to selectively treat people differently based on their mood at the moment. We'd love to stay here again, but going to wait until they work out the rough edges or get staff who make it worth the...
Read moreI am writing to formally express my concern and disappointment regarding my recent experience at Hotel Burg on 8.11-8.13. While I had expected a welcoming and professional environment, I encountered treatment that I believe was both discriminatory and indicative of insufficient staff training.
During my stay, on the date of 8.12.2028 team member by the name of Bella not only made inappropriate assumptions about who I was and questioned my presence on the property while I walked through the lobby. She stopped me by placing her hand in my face asking for me to provided my ID. To the front desk. I stated to her is my room key not enough once showing her my room key who laughed and I kept on walking. She did not ask one other individual who was entering the lobby getting on to the elevator for there ID. Her behavior is not only discrimination but is unacceptable.
This interactions left me feeling uncomfortable, unwelcome, and singled out in a way no guest should experience.
It is my belief that this issues stem from a lack of proper diversity, equity, and inclusion training, as well as inadequate guidance on professional service standards. Proper training would ensure that all guests are treated with the same level of courtesy, respect, and attentiveness, regardless of background or appearance.
I would also like to note this property is still under construction and the noise starts as early at 7am. Lucky I was up at that time but if you are planning to relax this might not be the best place.
Also note the front desk is chatty and ask a lot of person questions where are you from why are you traveling here. As I had a full interview at 10pm at night explaining I was from Boca Raton FL and was traveling for work. I asked the young lady if my room was going to be quiet as I start work at 4am and would be returning at 2pm to go to sleep she said yes. Instead of asking me questions she should have focused on the fact that she but me in a construction site to sleep it.
Also there is no food or room service on this property. The restaurant opens at 4pm. The front desk will instruct you to leave the property to eat.
I hope this feedback will prompt meaningful improvements in your...
