Misleading and Disappointing - Definitely Not Pet Friendly!
The Burrus House Inn in Manteo, NC (close to Nags Head), claims to be a pet-friendly location. As a frequent traveler who often brings my small furry companion along, I was excited to visit what I thought would be a welcoming and accommodating place. Sadly, my expectations were not just unmet; they were completely shattered.
First and foremost, let me be very clear: this place should NOT be considered pet-friendly by any stretch of the imagination. The website and marketing materials make it seem like pets are welcome and treated as part of the family, but the reality is starkly different. Pets are not permitted in the main property at all. Instead, pet owners are relegated to a small, outdated shack on the outskirts of the property. Yes, you read that correctly—a tiny, uncomfortable shack, far removed from the amenities and luxuries that the main property offers.
We envisioned our dog relaxing in comfort, and having access to the same high-quality accommodations as any other guest. However what is offered instead is a cramped, shabby building that seems more like an afterthought than a proper accommodation.
It's absolutely ridiculous that this place advertises itself as "pet-friendly" when, in reality, pet owners are treated as second-class guests. It feels like they only allow pets because they want to attract more customers, but they don't actually want to accommodate them properly. If you're going to claim to be a pet-friendly establishment, then actually be pet-friendly. This half-hearted attempt is not only disappointing but also misleading to guests who are looking for a true pet-inclusive experience.
To add insult to injury, while the main inn offers gourmet dining, luxurious rooms, and various amenities, we were stuck in a dingy, isolated area with no access to any of these perks. The entire setup is completely unacceptable for anyone who considers their pet a part of the family and expects them to be treated with respect and care.
Strongly advise anyone who is considering this Inn because of its supposed pet-friendly nature to look elsewhere. There are plenty of genuinely pet-friendly locations that truly understand the needs of pet owners and their animals, and this is certainly not...
Read moreOur first time to the outer banks. Couldn't have been happier with our choice on a location to stay at. We did come off season and we were aware that came with a different experience though it did not dissapoint. When we arrived, we were early, Donna Mae took care of us immediately. She not only got us to our room, but they upgraded our room without us asking and boy the view did not disappoint. We had the Mary Carolyn room, it says it's on the 2nd floor but really, it's like being on third floor. They do have an elevator which helps for baggage. Gorgeous morning sunrises with this room. We unfortunately could not take full advantage by sitting out to enjoy, it was too cold and windy for it but it was beautiful. There are quite a few areas at the Burrus House where you can sit or play a couple board games. They also offer breakfast egg sandwiches/pastries along with K cup coffee options. There is an ice/water machine in the main dining. Nice option should you need it. Because we were here during off season, fewer guests, both staff Vicky and Donna Mae made sure we had everything we need. One evening they hand delivered to our room a bottle of wine along with a tray of cheese, crackers and dates. I really feel like they went above to make sure we had a great experience, and we did.
Lots of options for food within both walking or driving distance.
We would be back and next time try during the summer. We realize that comes with more people but to get the full experience of OBX, everything being open, it would be worth it.
Thanks to all the staff at Burrus House. Your home is beautiful, staff are amazing, and loved the location. Hope to you see...
Read moreThis was our third trip to the Burrus House Inn but this trip was under vastly different circumstances from our previous trips.
One Friday September 27th Hurricane Helene rolled through our mountain community in Western North Carolina. We had just received 28 inches on rain two days prior that had nothing to do with Helene so the ground was saturated when Helene's gale force winds blew through. We found ourselves without power, phones, water and surrounded by a myriad of mud slides and massive fallen trees.
By Monday, the Fire and Rescue from Colorado knocked on our door, climbing over debris and vast hazards in order to check on every house in our community. They told us that we were lucky because we could actually evacuate through a firebreak.
I scrambled to find one bar of service on the deck and called the Burrus House. I explained the situation and asked them if they had a space for us for at least two weeks.
Without any questions, they simply told me to come on and they'd figure out the rest.
On Tuesday, we made the arduous 8 mile trek down to I-40. West bound was totally closed but east bound had recently been reopened--- we made the 7 hour drive and were welcomed with hugs and a beautiful room to call home for two weeks.
As I stated, this was not our first trip, so obviously in the best of times they do things right, just as we discovered they do in the worst of times.
We cannot thank Vickie and Donnamae and the entire staff enough. A true shelter...
