There are so many reasons that we loved staying at the White Doe Inn. The staff went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable, pleasant and safe (more on that later). The innkeeper, Liz, was nothing short of amazing. Always happy and helpful and such a pleasure to talk to. Any time we ran into her or Topanga, we immediately felt valued and special. This staff works hard to make sure every guest feels like they are at home.
The house and property grounds are well kept and intended to feel like the home is still in the period it was built in, but provided with modern touches that we all "require" so it feels both cozy but not super modern where it loses its charm. Breakfast can not be missed! The 4-course breakfast was really a huge highlight every day, and we truly looked forward to it each morning (we're not even breakfast people!). If you have early plans, they offer a takeaway breakfast that was pretty darn great. Where most places give you a standard continental breakfast in a doggy bag, the chef made great, hot breakfast in to go containers for my wife and I and even took into account her need to not have eggs. Absolutely delicious and we ate it over an hour after it was made... still hot and fresh!
The one downside of our stay had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the White Doe Inn or its responsibility. An old power line across the street blew apart. Flames and sparks everywhere (for a brief moment) around 11 at night. We were scared and ran outside, thinking the fire was inside the house, but realized it was from the power line outside across the street. I text Liz (they provide the innkeeper's number for just such needs/emergencies) and she responded immediately and came over since she lives adjacent to the White Doe Inn. Called police and fire departments, and then made sure each guest was alright. She proceeded to call the owners who came right over. Let me tell you... Bebe and Bob were the sweetest, funniest people and are an absolute treasure to the wonderful inn and town of Manteo! Again, Liz was phenomenal in making sure every guest was taken care of and stayed up until the power was restored four hours later. I tell this story to remind you that this property and its staff will stop at nothing to make sure you're taken care of!
Ultimately, though, what makes the White Doe Inn such a special bed and breakfast is the little things. My wife and I have stayed at other b&b establishments and enjoyed them, but the little details at the White Doe are what stands apart from the others. Each day they had a happy hour with free wine and beer. There were afternoon pastries boxed for each room in the house to take back which were amazing! Free cold water, homemade ice cream sandwiches, popcorn and all the amazing coffee you could want. And they had bicycles you could take around town, as well as beach equipment and towels. They really thought of everything, making the trip so much more carefree.
The only regret we have about the White Doe Inn is that we weren't able to stay longer. I know this is a long review, but great places deserve all the praise they can get, and the White Doe Inn set the bar so high that we're confident all other places we visit will pale in comparison. We can't wait...
Read moreOur stay at The White Doe Inn can only be described by three E’s- Endearing, Excellence, and Extraordinary.
Endearing because The White Doe Inn is just like home thanks to the hospitality of Liz Myers, the Managing Innkeeper and her Assistant, Topenga Beacham! They made our stay special and memorable! Superior attention to each guest was genuine, as if we were the only ones staying in your beautiful Victorian. Liz is a part of the Manteo fabric with her enchanting smile, her sweet stories of her Corgi, Pedro and lore of The White Doe Inn. Topenga has a welcoming personality, a thoughtful heart, and manages the breakfast room effortlessly and with ease. For Liz and Topenga, being Innkeepers is a vocation which you can see in their love for the Inn and the cherished community of Manteo.
Excellence because the meeting rooms and little nooks dotted throughout the Inn, are well appointed and festively decorated. They are places to enjoy family conversations, games, and reading which helps to reflect on the joys of the past and nurtures new experiences. Our room, The Scuppermong Suite, had all the comforts of home in a beautiful decor fitting that of the Outer Banks Seaside theme. The White Doe Inn lives up to its promises for a wonderful night sleep by staying warm with cozy down comforters, a gas fireplace and being relaxed on a dreamy mattress! Our family awoke refreshed each day!
Let's not forget the delicious coffee and scrumptious, robust four course breakfast, homemade baked goods, and fresh ice cream sandwiches that graced our stay. Liz and Topenga are helpful and also give you tips for the best places to sightsee and dine in the area! They check in to make certain that you are enjoying Manteo and the Outer Banks! If you bring your pet, they will also be given lots of cuddles, soft beds, and a special goodie bag with cookies and toys! Everyone is sweetly cared for at The White Doe Inn!
Extraordinary because Liz and Topenga make a beautiful team. They naturally greeted us throughout the day as we toured the charming town with quaint shops and eateries. The White Doe Inn surpasses all others with bikes on the property to use freely to meander throughout the side streets to be captivated by the historic homes and to wander to the docks and to see the boats moored off Shallowbag Bay! Later you can rest by the fire-pit with handy snacks and s'mores to invite tranquility and laughter.
Thank you Bob and Bebe, Owners, for the gift of The White Doe Inn and accolades to Liz and Topenga and all of your staff, from housekeeping to your chefs and cooks. They are truly passionate about managing and maintaining the integrity of the Inn with pride! Our OBX Dream met with Endearment, Excellence, and the Extraordinary by choosing The White Doe Inn in the seaside resort area of Manteo!
Our Warmest Regards,
The...
Read moreMy husband and I just got home from a four day stay at the White Doe Inn to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. I don’t have enough words to describe how wonderful this place is. We booked the “Love for All Seasons” package, and we were treated like absolute royalty. Chip, a staff member, was waiting on the porch for us to arrive and immediately made us feel welcome. He gave us a quick tour and told us to treat the house as our own home, going as far as to show us the unlimited homemade ice creams sandwiches (which are killer) that live in the freezer. He also helped my husband carry our bags from the car to our third floor room. I realize this is probably standard practice, but when you’re used to carrying your own junk to a hotel room, this little touch was superb. We were shown to our room, where they had put a chilled bottle of champagne on the fireplace mantle and a plate of (fabulous) gourmet cheeses and chocolate covered strawberries for us to enjoy. We had one small hiccup in the form of a stained comforter, but Chip immediately changed the bedding (personally) and gave us a second bottle of champagne for the minor inconvenience. Aside from the blanket, the room and bathroom were extravagant and cozy. Each breakfast was a delicious four course experience, with so much food offered that I was never able to eat it all. We were also treated to an anniversary dinner consisting of steak, caprese salad (fresh from the garden), soft shell crabs, and an incredible desert. My husband swears it is the greatest meal he has ever had. We were unable to meet Pam, the innkeeper, until our second day there. Let me tell you, this lady was worth the wait. She is so kind, warm, welcoming, and INTERESTING. My husband and I came to this bed and breakfast with the intention of secluding ourselves and spending time together, but we both found ourselves hoping to run into Pam in the kitchen and the sitting areas because she was just such a joy to spend time with. We are already planning our next trip to stay here, and it cannot come soon enough. Our motto this week was “Chip gets a tip, Pam gets a Christmas card.”
I can’t wrap this up without mentioning the littlest Innkeeper, Peanut. Pam’s little pooch was the best boy and was so happy to see us every time we got back. He will probably get a...
