When we got there everything seemed to be okay. The guy at the front seemed pretty nice. He told us that the cards might not work for the doors but we didn’t have a problem with that. So we went to our room and the first thing we noticed was a strange smell. It was a smoke smell. But we didn’t pay no mind to it. Every hotel has a different smell. So we settled our stuff in and went to get something to eat. When we arrived back we went to take a shower, the shower drains had mold. The towels looked to be stained and soiled. While my fiancé was still in the shower, I went to look at the beds. I noticed on one that there was a blood stain, so I picked up the blanket and seen that there was a lot more blood and a urine or some kind of stain on the middle part of the bed. I continued to roll down the bed sheet and saw that there were little black specks. I don’t know if they were bugs or dirt. As soon as I saw that I got a big whiff of sweat and body Oder coming from the bed. I took a video and showed my fiancé. I then told her I was going to show the guy at the front. I went up and there was a couple checking in. I told the guy at the front desk about the stains and bugs/dirt, he wanted me to try to keep quiet since there was another couple in the lobby. He then paged housekeeping saying the bed is really dirty and they needed someone to come clean it. After about 3 minutes discussing that through the phone, he proceeded to tell me that he’d give me bed sheets and everything that is dirty for me to change them. I told him that I’d talk to my fiancé and see what she wanted to do. He did not tell me that housekeeping was coming to change the bed, so we didn’t think they were coming. My fiancé was in the middle of getting dressed and the housekeeping barged in. One man and one woman. They were halfway in the door and my fiancé didn’t have any time to put her pants on. They proceeded to come in. After they came in they took everything dirty from the one bed and put it on the bed that was semi clean. They did not change the pillow cases. Just the sheet and bed covers. They then left so my fiancé and I went online and looked at reviews to see if it was always this bad. We read about bugs, mold and cockroaches. We then read one review about a car being broken into. So we hurried to check our car. As we were walking outside a woman walked in and I noticed her husband and children were in the car waiting for her to pay for the check in. I asked my fiancé if we should tell them about the stuff we saw, so we decided that we should so that they didn’t end up having the experience we were having. So I asked the guy if they were checking in and told him about the bed and showed him the video, he decided to text his wife and tell her about everything. I was walking in and trying to get her to come outside to talk and we were at the entrance when I told her about the blood and dirt. I showed her the video and the girl went back in to get her cards and the guy at the front desk chased out after me, saying “if you guys don’t stop, I’m kicking you out with no refund”. So my fiancé stated “we’re thinking about leaving anyways” he then said “you have 20 mins or the cops will be here”. So we hurried to our room and packed everything up. I told the guy that we left the key cards in the room...

Read moreI was honestly very nervous about staying here based on the reviews we had read. However, my husband was participating in an event being held at the nearby Mt. Orab Sports Complex, and this was the only hotel close by.
Thankfully, it was not nearly as bad as we were anticipating and we ended up really enjoying our stay!
For starters, we requested a ground floor room and a rollaway bed before we arrived, and were accommodated with both. It should be noted that this hotel does not have an elevator.
Another review stated that the chlorine in the pool had a strange odor; that's because it appears to be a salt water pool. My children had a great time in the swimming pool over the 4 days we stayed at the property! The swimming pool is basic, and the hot tub pictured in many of the hotel photos is no longer there, (which disappointed my husband) but my kids still really enjoyed it, which is the main thing!
Our room was fine- I believe it may be one that has already been updated. It isn't a 5 star hotel, and if you don't go in expecting it to be, the rooms will likely meet your needs. The linens were all newer and clean, as were the pillows and mattresses. The room itself was clean and no signs of mold as some reviewers experienced. The AC worked as did everything in the room.
Breakfast was adequate. The buffet was small (just 4 hot items- eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy), along with bread, pre-packaged pastries, yogurts, fruit and cereal. It fit our needs. One morning, I did have to inform the Front Desk Clerk as the buffet was out of the hot items, which she quickly attended to (one day there was a dedicated breakfast attendant, but not the other days). Another day, the coffee machine wasn't working, but again, it was fixed quickly.
The location is a huge plus if you need to be in Mt. Orab for some reason. It is close to fast food, a great Mexican Restaurant called Mi Camino Real, the Sports Complex, and a large Kroger. We went to Cincinnati 2 of the days we were there, and the drive was very easy.
We would not hesitate to stay there again if we were in the area!
Some final thoughts: the hotel was built as a Holiday Inn Express around 2001 or so. From there, it was converted into a Best Inn (I believe HIE changed requirements at some point to require elevators, which is probably one of the reasons this property lost that franchise), and then into a Best Western. I believe the Countryside Inn name may have come next.
It should be noted that many of the professional photos online are of the property when it was a Best Western.
The property seems to be operated by a family, with just a small handful of extra staff members. They appear to be doing their best to update/repair the hotel a little bit at a time. As you can imagine, this is a huge task. Even though the hotel is only about 23-24 years old, it has had a rough life, and it is clear that it was not adequately maintained for quite some time. However, the current owners seem to be trying their best to improve things and I commend their efforts.
For the price per night, this is not going to be a Hilton. Go in with reasonable expectations and you won't be disappointed. You may even be pleasantly...
