I absolutely loved hotel St. Marie. They have the best front desk staff in all of New Orleans and I’ve been coming for over twenty years. I’ve never felt as welcome as I did with them.
The hotel is old but very well maintained. The pillows were incredibly supportive and comfortable. The beds were a little stiff but easy to rest on. And I loved the voice activated tv remote so I didn’t have to wait for a channel guide to load. They had solid water pressure for the French quarter too. So why three stars instead of five? Simple, a few things went wrong that shouldn’t have.
The photos of my room are when I was checking out. It’s clean because I cleaned it myself. You’ll notice the Lysol wipes. I’m glad I brought them because under the counter in the bedroom was grime galore. I scrubbed it like crazy. The top of the counter was spotless. The sink had some dirt and shower too.
You won’t be able to work easily from your room because the chair sits well below the desk top where your computer is. There is no fitness center (but I should have checked before booking so that is on me), but those aren’t the biggest issues. House keeping is a problem.
Do not expect your room kept clean or any privacy. My door didn’t lock half the time. You have to pull it and hope the lock catches. One day while I was there the cleaning person came right into my room without knocking or asking if anyone was in there. He was also not wearing a uniform or anything identifiable as an employee. If he had been five minutes earlier I would have been naked as I just showered. It was incredibly inappropriate. The front desk apologized like crazy, I was just happy it wasn’t a stranger.
Housekeeping will make the bed and replace towels, but that’s it. I had a pizza box and put all my trash in it so it would be obvious it was to be thrown out and set it for them to take. They didn’t for two days so I had to take care of it myself. I also put all my garbage into two plastic bags and set them by the door, they didn’t take them.
You are apparently supposed to take your own garbage to the dumpster and clean your own room. I’m not doing that, I’m a guest in the hotel.
I also accidentally dropped a couple potato chips and stepped on them. There were some crumbs from them so I thought they’d vacuum or sweep, I was wrong. Two days later I swept the floors myself.
I still tipped $20 to housekeeping because I felt bad since they did make the beds and change the towels, but I’d never go back because the breaking into my room unannounced and the lack of cleanliness. If housekeeping is fixed I’d return but I’d go for a different room...
Read moreI checked into the hotel around 6ish pm January 2nd. Due to the tragic attack on Bourbon street the hotel did not have valet or parking. The parking situation was not made known to the guest prior to arrival. I spoke with the desk attendee who asked me to park by the barricade so I could unload my luggage and a bellhop would assist me.
Due to me following instructions, I was yelled at by police for blocking traffic. The whole time I had the desk attendant on the phone who told me it was ok for me to stay put. I had police and citizens yelling at me simultaneously. Eventually the bellhop was able to retrieve all my luggage and I was I had to walk several blocks with small children who were not in weather appropriate clothing. We travelled 11 hours to the hotel and were unable I would be walking blocks to the hotel with my 3 and 7 year old.
After checking into my room, the bellhop delivered my luggage to my room. I thanked him for his help. He then proceeded to say “we work for tips” and extended his hand to me. I told him I was unsure if I had any cash on me and I was so sorry. He proceeded to stand in the room and responded “we all work for tips here. The bellhops, the kitchen, everyone.” He kept standing in the room with his hand out. I looked in my purse and found a $5 and handed it to him. He didn’t say thank you or even smirk. He looked extremely disappointed, turned, and left the room.
The building was apparently having an AC issue. We slept that night in a room that was almost 80 degrees outside. My options were to suffer through it or try to leave the balcony door open so cold are could come in. Keep in mind, I do have a 3 year old son and we were staying on the 4th floor. I was terrified to leave the door open because I rather be hot than wake up to an accident.
The icing of the cake was that today February 21st the hotel tried to run my card for a room when I’m currently in Georgia. I did not give authorization or tried to rent a room from there.
Needless to say, I will not be coming back to this establishment. Anyone who has even stayed here, check your bank statements. Thankfully my bank sent me an alert when they tried to...
Read moreVisited with my wife and 2 college aged children. The place is literally steps from Bourbon Street. That was really cool. The bars are expensive, but I kinda expected that, so... whatever. Was there for 4 days, and spent about $1500 for the four of us for food and drinks. Not the worst, but it is pricey. ||The hotel itself is actually quiet. I was surprised since it was right there in the French Quarter. It's on a side street around the corner from Bourbon Street. Bourbon is a 2 minute walk away. When we finally would wrap things up at the end of the night, the rooms were quiet, and you couldn't hear any of the ambient noise from the bars and such. ||The staff was great! Really friendly, and were extremely helpful. ||The room itself was clean, and had an old school feel to it while still having all the regular amenities that you'd expect from a modern hotel room. I joked around with the staff when I checked in to see if there were ghosts. They laughed a little, and then reacted like "well... maybe." For the record, I didn't see any ghosts. ||The hotel has a neat little courtyard with a pool. We didn't hang out there, but it looked really cool. They also have a small bar next to the lobby. It was a great pre or post party place to visit on your way out or coming back from Bourbon or one of the other bar districts. ||The only set back for me was that the room didn't have a microwave. We had a lot of leftovers that went in the trash because we couldn't heat them up in the room. Not sure if the lobby has one, but microwaves, while not the absolute standard in the Hotel Industry, would have been nice to have handy in the room. ||Overall, I'd absolutely visit this place again. Clean, great location, friendly staff, and had that historic...
