Oceana Grill was one of the last places that my husband and I stumbled into on our final day of our trip to the French Quarter. We experienced one of the most intense rainstorms the night prior which caused the most extreme humidity on this day, so when I say we stumbled in, we really needed an escape from the heat and badly needed a glass of water. Also, after an extended weekend of stuffing our faces full of so much food, I craved a salad so badly and it was kind of tough find a restaurant menu with a Caesar salad! We found Oceana Grill and breathed a sigh of relief to be able to finally sit down and get out of the heat. The staff was incredibly welcoming and due to it being the middle of the day, we were glad that it wasn't too busy or loud. To my excitement, there was a Caesar salad on the menu and a handful of protein options you could select from: catfish, chicken, shrimp, or gator (still not used to seeing that option on a menu). I landed on the Blackened Shrimp which was absolutely the move! When I tell you I devoured every bite of this salad, I mean it! It was exactly what I needed after eating a lot of heavier foods. The shrimp was plump and the seasoning on it was outstanding; it was such a refreshing salad overall. Now, even though I mentioned having been in need of a light meal, this did not stop me from still ordering the Fried Shrimp Platter. This platter was served with French fries, coleslaw, jalapeño hushpuppies, cocktail and tartar sauce! I was really excited to try out the hushpuppies as I haven't had one in so long, and unfortunately was slightly letdown by them. I was hoping for them to be a bit more flavorful since they were jalapeno, but they did lack any punch and seemed under-seasoned. The shrimp, on the other hand, were fried to perfection and had the perfect amount of crunch and juiciness. The French fries were also executed well and I really enjoyed whatever they were seasoned with. Especially after completely finishing the salad (which was a large portion), I knew I wouldn't be capable of finishing the shrimp platter even with the help of my husband. We took the rest of the leftovers to go, to be enjoyed on the plane on the way home.

Oceana Grill is a fairly highly-rated local eatery that I was excited to try because it's often mentioned in a book series I enjoy, set in New Orleans. We thought it would be fun to experience it firsthand, but the visit turned out to be a mixed bag. Appetizer: We shared the crab cake appetizer. The crab cakes themselves were just okay, and they came smothered in a mushroom sauce that was also merely average. Nothing about the dish stood out or left a memorable impression. Entrees: I ordered the shrimp Étouffée, which had a rich and tasty flavor—but that’s where the praise ends. The shrimp were so small they were barely detectable. They might have been rehydrated dried shrimp, similar to what you’d find in an Asian grocery store. It felt borderline deceptive to call it "shrimp Étouffée" when you have to squint into your spoon and search to confirm there’s shrimp in it. I would have much preferred a few large, plump shrimp over a handful of tiny ones. The presentation was lackluster as well. My husband opted for the sampler platter, which included crawfish Étouffée, jambalaya, and red beans with smoked andouille sausage (served with white rice on the side). The crawfish Étouffée was similar to mine: decent flavor, but with barely any crawfish to speak of. The jambalaya was unimpressive, with mushy rice that detracted from the dish. It’s unclear if this is the norm for local preparation or specific to this restaurant. The red beans and smoked andouille sausage, however, were excellent. The beans had just the right amount of smoky flavor, and the sausage was flavorful and satisfying. My husband said he’d return just for this dish—provided the white rice improved. Drinks: My husband ordered an IPA-style beer, which was decent. I chose the non-alcoholic “Bayou Breeze,” made with pineapple juice, lime juice, and coconut cream. Unfortunately, it was cloyingly sweet, even for someone like me who enjoys sweet drinks. I kept adding water to it to tame the sweetness. It seemed like they removed the alcohol from a cocktail recipe but didn’t adjust the flavor balance, resulting in an overly sugary beverage. Dessert: We ended the meal with bread pudding, a staple in New Orleans. Oceana Grill’s version was solid. It wasn’t the best I’ve had but far from the worst, and it made for an enjoyable finish to an otherwise uneven dining experience. Final Thoughts: Oceana Grill has its highlights—notably, the red beans and smoked andouille sausage—but much of the meal fell short of expectations. With better execution and attention to detail, this restaurant could shine, but as it stands, it’s more of a hit-or-miss experience.

I recently visited this restaurant for the first time, guided by my daughter and son-in-law, who are familiar with the area. They led us through the bustling, lively atmosphere of New Street, which was buzzing with energy, even late into the night. Although we arrived for a very late dinner, the place was still packed, and we faced quite a wait before being seated. Once upstairs on the second floor, we had to wait a bit longer before we could place our order. We finally settled on two dozen fresh oysters, a plate of cooked oysters, Mardi Gras pasta, gumbo, and a few local Abita Amber drafts. The fresh oysters were a highlight – briny, cold, and deliciously fresh. However, the cooked oysters, while unique, were a bit too heavy on the cheese for our taste and didn’t go over as well with our group. The Mardi Gras pasta was good, with a balanced flavor that wasn’t too salty, although my daughter mentioned that the portion size seemed smaller compared to her previous visits. The restaurant itself had a memorable ambiance. It was decorated with a quirky, almost spooky charm, featuring framed photographs of famous visitors and other eclectic New Orleans-inspired decor. Each frame seemed to tell its own story, capturing the spirit of the city’s rich history and lively culture. The ambiance made the experience feel like much more than just a meal – it was like stepping into a vibrant piece of New Orleans itself. Despite a few minor disappointments with the food, the setting and atmosphere left a lasting impression, making it a memorable night out.

So we decided to try Oceana Grill tonight because it's mentioned many times in a book series I read that based in New Orleans. As soon as we walked in, we were so excited. And then the best thing happened! We got Damon as a server. We were immediately drawn in by his personality and friendly demeanor. He was one of the best servers I have ever experienced in all my travels. He explained specials, helped pick out things we really wanted to try, and picked me the best non-alcoholic drink for someone who doesnt much enjoy alcohol even tho were in a city that's known for alcohol! ;) Damon made our experience top-notch and Oceana Grill is extremely lucky to have him. The Oceana Famous Oysters were our favorite. They were melt in your mouth delicious. The Taste of New Orleans was also extremely good and was a great option to try three amazing dishes prepared wonderfully. The Shrimp Po-Boy was HUGE (seriously, fricken gigantic) and my sister ate it so fast she didn't breathe, it was THAT good. The seafood gumbo was also really, really, good and my husband scraped that bowl clean. The food also came out within minutes of ordering. It was so crazy fast! We also went around 5pm so it wasn't super busy. It did start to get busy around 5:30-6pm. Definitely make Oceana Grill a must stop on your visit to the French Quarter and ask for Damon!!! Seriously, Oceana Grill.... Damon is one of a kind. He was so incredibly kind and so fun to talk to. He is one of those people that will make this a never forget dining experience.

In town for a concert and stopped by for dinner! It's hard to go wrong in New Orleans and this place did everything right. Highly recommend. Here are my takeaways: Environment Located in the quarters, we had to wait in line because of how busy it was but the wait wasn't too long and it was well worth it. Large space with plenty of character. There are tons of options for dining and places to sit at the bar as well. We had a great seats near the window for people watching. It's a lively vibrant fun place that looks to always be busy. Service Our server was amazing. She made sure we had everything we needed and was warm, friendly and made us feel like we were at home. She gave us great recommendations on food and drinks to try. Although they were busy, the service was fast and attentive. Loved it! Food and Drinks What can I say - all the food was amazing. I had the shrimp poboy and fries and we had a side of gator bites. Everything was delicious ESPECIALLY the gator and the sauce. I will be back for more and to try other things on the menu. So good! I can't remember the drink I had but it was good and strong just like it should be. Overall This was perfect place for dinner. We had a great meal and great drinks with a fun and upbeat atmosphere to get our nights started. Service was great and although we had to wait to be seated, we didn't wait long and it was well worth it. I will be going back and highly recommend. Run here!
