Upon reservation of this boutique hotel I was emailed by the Complex Director of Sales and Marketing. I thought this was a thoughtful gesture and responded with a few questions to which I never got a response. I should have paid attention to this bit of foreshadowing. Unfortunately, we were unable to stay at the hotel, because despite having booked our stay 5 months in advance we were told at the time of check-in that the hotel had been over booked. Hotel staff attempted to reach out to other hotels in the area to find us another room, but were ultimately unsuccessful and we were forced to find our own accommodations. Hotel staff did mention reaching out to one hotel that they deemed "expensive". When I asked if the Moderne would be covering the difference, I was told that they do not do that. I understand walking patrons is not an uncommon practice, however, it was extremely inconvenient and caused us a lot of trouble. As state previously, we booked this hotel 5 months in advance in an effort to be close to all of our planned activities and remain within our budget by walking. The hotel we ended up staying at was more expensive with a last minute reservation, and farther from our booked activities, and because it was more expensive we were unable to afford to pay for transportation. It is my understanding that had we cancelled at the time of check-in (as was done to us), we would have been charged for the room, but we were not granted any guarantee that our accommodations would be upheld or even offered any compensation for the last minute cancelling of our reservation. This was our first boutique hotel experience and I was excited to move away from chains in an effort to support smaller businesses and in the hopes of a more personal experience. Unfortunately, the service did not meet those expectations and nearly ruined our trip. I would not recommend staying here as your reservations are not guaranteed and you could end up stranded without a...
Read moreI want to start by saying we would absolutely 100% stay here again.
The staff was very nice. They have a doorman during the day. The lobby is adorable, and they put up such a lovely tree for the holidays.
The rooms are clean but not well laid out. Very soft bed and comfortable pillows. There is no full-length mirror anywhere and no mirror at all in the main bedroom. The mirror in the bathroom is great unless someone else is in there. Good lighting, though. Loved that.
There is a wardrobe with plenty of hangers and even a branded umbrella! There is a little desk under a mounted TV. They advertised that you can cast to the TV which is great! Buuut they didn't say that you have to download an app and that it's the only way to use the TV. You can't actually just watch TV. You can get to the guide channel, but once you click something, it all goes away.
The bathroom is spacious, but only because they don't have shower stalls. It's an open shower with no glass walls or anything, so everything in the bathroom gets wet. Including the open socket.
The sink. Is. Horrendous. It's so deep that I could bend 90 degrees and still not hit the tap. It has one of those little faucets that's super close to the edge and a massive flat basin. It's not great to use, especially to wash your face in.
The location is EXCELLENT. This and the staff and cleanliness are the reasons to return. This was in our price range, it was clean, the staff was great, and it's walking distance to so many things we wanted to do, including MOMA. It's literally a block or two from subway stations. It's a few blocks from Times Square, Rockefeller center, Central Park, tons of restaurants.
We walked almost everywhere and we're steps away from the subway for the rest of it.
We loved our stay here, and even the complaints we had weren't that dire. Oh no, they have a crappy sink. Not going to stop me from having a great...
Read moreI am not sure if 2 or 3 is most appropriate but I'll give it a 3. Let's start on the positive: the room was clean and the housekeeping was friendly and efficient. However, on the negative side there are a few things that were disappointing. First, the room was very small. More importantly, if you're short, you can't reach the bath towels, which are perched on a ledge in the shower. I was only able to get it by standing on the think ledge separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom, and that isn't safe for someone who is more elderly. Also, there was one tiny soap bar, for two people. At the price the room cost, I think another soap bar could've been there. There also are no hooks in the bathroom and just one small towel rack, so it was hard to hang anything. There's a lounge on the second floor that offers coffee, hot chocolate, tea, etc....I wanted hot chocolate, but there was none there on any of the three mornings I visited the lounge. There was coffee, however. Also, the elevator wasn't working one evening, which, hey, s* happens, but when you only have one elevator, that can be a problem, and yes, they only have one. Finally, at checkout the host asked if there were any issues, and so we took the opportunity to mention some of the things above, but she did not seem interested, and if anything seemed surprised we were actually responding to the question she asked. Like it's something they say at checkout, but don't really care to hear. She didn't write any of it down. Anyway, for the price we paid (yikes), I expected far more. But giving it 3 stars because I don't think any of the things I noted were...
