I stayed at Off Soho Suites several days ago and was displeased with my experience. There were a few positives, but overall the place is a disaster and I would never stay here again. This place is really just a converted apartment building. Calling them suites is a joke. These are anti-suites. The rooms offer nothing in the way of comfort or luxury.
Whoever owns and manages this place is really trying to capitalize on the location and spend as little money as possible.
The hotel looks like it was given an Ikea-style modern remodel some years ago and received some positive travel industry reviews (they have travel review placards and stickers all over the front entrance) and is trying to live off that glory while spending as little as possible in upkeep and basics like soap (crappy motel soap), tissues (there were none) and the cheapest, single ply toilet paper money can buy.
THE GOOD: Location. It's several blocks to the subway and lots of great Nolita and Soho restaurants and bars and a Whole Foods. Cleanliness: The common areas and room was clean and odorless. Kitchen: There's a kitchen if you want to cook.
THE BAD: Run Down and Poorly Maintained: The room was in desperate need of a complete remodel. The furniture was thrashed, corners of the cheap coffee table gouged and chunks of veneer ripped away. Stains and rips in the black leather couch. Nail holes in the walls and shoddily rehung wall art. Gouges and scrapes in the walls from god knows what. Stains on the old, old blankets. Lumpy old mattress. cheap linens. White paint splatters on black furniture in the bedroom and living room. Hardwood floors were refinished by amateurs. The heater worked intermittently and didn't adequately heat the room. Internet/Wifi: Couldn't connect from my room because of a weak signal and no hard wire available. In general, the room just feels cold, uninviting, and uncomfortable.
It's pretty simple, the owners and management need to take hospitality service 101 classes and hire a decorator to redo the rooms. Until then, stay away from this poor excuse for an all...
Read moreWe've stayed here a number of times. It is not the nicest hotel, but it is the friendliest and the most spacious (for the price). We've always stayed in the suites, which have a kitchen, queen bedroom, foldout sofa, dining area and bathroom.
All of the staff is super friendly and always seems happy to see you and are more than willing to help! The concierge once reserved an on-street parking spot for me at 3AM!
We visit NYC 4-6 times a year and we've stayed in a dozen different hotels between SOHO and 23rd Street. Most hotels in this price range are extremely small and cramped. Some of them are very nicely appointed, but that doesn't really help when there isn't even room for your suitcase! The Off Soho Suites are a converted apartment building, so it is like renting a whole apartment without the aggravation of AirBNB, and with all the services that you get in a hotel.
Our last two visits, a year apart, have been marred by super loud construction (two different buildings!), but that isn't really the fault of the hotel.
The bed in the suite is a standard queen, which I find a bit small, but it is a very comfortable mattress. The kitchenette has dishes, silverware, microwave, stove, full size fridge and freezer and coffee maker.
There is a very nice sitting room with a library on the first floor. There is a vending machine, laundry room and exercise center in the basement. On our last visit, the exercise bike was broken which was disappointing - due to knee issues I'm unable to use an elliptical or a treadmill.
That said, the real reason to stay here is location! The hotel is a short walk to Chinatown, or Little Italy and pretty much any direction you go, there are fantastic restaurants and things to do. There are also a few very nice gyms in the area, but you'll have to pay a drop-in fee.
The hotel used to have discounted parking at a nearby lot, but the lot closed. However, I was able to find a cheap garage on Allen Street, about...
Read moreCan't decide to give it 3.5 or 4 stars. We stayed for 4 days and was like our own apartment. It was great value for money. Rooms were very dated with general wear, but everything worked though we did have to ask for the a/c to be fixed, and our entry door as both were not working. Hotel staff were pleasant but somewhat grumpy and considerably rude & unprofessional on 2 occasions but they always complied with our requests which were always reasonable and staff were otherwise pleasant. I would stay here again but only with the right people because of it's low cost and it is on Manhattan, but this is not for everyone. Beds were comfortable. I slept on the sofa bed and it was surprisingly comfortable. Shower was wonderful! Good strong flow, and lovely and hot! Location is close to subways, but is in a rather smelly and unclean part of Soho, so you will need to overlook all this on your way to the Subway! I did not feel unsafe, though. NOTE: You will save money not eating out but you need to do your own shopping for basics eg dish soap, dishcloth, tea towel, general aseptic cleaning wipes, all food, all toiletries, (shampoo/cond/soap is supplied but is minuscule and poor quality), coffee filters. There is a stove and saucepans, but is limited, so don't expect to a lot of fancy cooking - basic only. We ate frozen veg and frozen meals for dinner and were satisfied. We also brought our own paper plates and cups as the ones supplied were quite ridiculous. There is a Whole Foods in close walking distance. I was glad we had blankets in our car and grabbed them at the last minute because there weren't enough blankets, though we didn't ask for more. I don't know whether they had any more, or not. I liked having my own...
