I had high hopes for this salon based on all the reviews and the Instagram posts. I booked an appt with JP for base color, lowlights and hairline highlights at the sink in two steps. Here is my convoluted experience at Yves Durif.
JP said he does the highlights at the same time as the base because it saves time. This makes absolutely no sense. I was highly suspect as this will make the high light placement and process time a mess and it not achievable. I came in looking like the first photo and asked for my roots to match my natural color. I wanted lowlights to cut the brassiness and i wanted gold highlights around my hairline only, close to the hairline as in the photos attached.
He did it all at once and let the bleach process for 15 minutes and didn't get close to the hairline, because he couldn't as the base color was already applied to my hairline. Also, the toner he used made my hair so dry and ashy, when i specifically asked for gold tone. Meanwhile, I paid for high lights and left with none.
When I booked the appointment, they told me that there no one available to dry my hair. This is not a problem as I can dry my own hair. I assumed I would sit at a chair and dry my hair....Nope! they took me in to the bathroom with terrible lighting and gave me a folding travel hairdryer so i can dry my hair in there with all the clients going to the bathroom. The electric outlet had a short and the dryer kept turning off. I asked Natalie if she could give me a professional dryer and she said no they don't have one.
I walked into the hair styling room and saw plenty of professional dryers. I told the lady at the front desk how unhappy I was and she said she'd tell the manager Megan to call me. Like a fool I paid the full price and tipped JP and the assistant.
I called the manager 2 times to tell them about my pathetic experience, and no one has called me back.
You lost a good client who lives in the neighborhood. I am shocked by this treatment. Absolutely shocked and you ruined my day and now I have to go somewhere else to fix my...

I have super fine, straight hair. It’s slightly damaged from hair loss and over processing and my blunt bob desperately needed a trim before an upcoming first date I had planned that week. My previous stylist had retired and moved to Chicago, so I needed to find someone new who was well-known for giving great haircuts on my type of hair. I did my research and Yves came up on a bunch of top “Best” stylists lists. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get an appointment with someone so sought-after, but I figured I’d give them a call anyway. The Carlyle salon fit me in for a cut with Yves, the owner, within 3 days of making the appointment, which worked out well because it was the same day as my upcoming first date. On the day of, I ended up getting stuck in traffic and was nearly 30 minutes late for my haircut, but the entire staff was incredibly sympathetic and if there was any issue on their end, they did not make it known. Yves and his assistant Natalie were beyond accommodating as well, they were genuinely kind and fun to be around. They are the type of people I’d like to actually be friends with.
Yves cuts with precision! He had me stand up initially and stand very still so he could cut my hair to the exact the length we had discussed at the beginning of the appointment. Then I sat down for the rest of the cut while we chatted about all sorts of topics and I enjoyed a glass of complementary rose. He took his time and it really shows.
Meanwhile, the first date I went on afterwards was a complete disaster, but at least I knew I looked great. I was confident and I couldn’t be happier with the result even a few days later, after having washed it and styled it myself. My haircut is super sexy and somehow voluminous.
To sum it up, Yves is the coolest and gives a masterful haircut! I had the absolute best experience I’ve ever had getting my haircut at the Yves Durif salon last week and I am thrilled I have found my new salon...
Read moreI walked into the Yves Durif Salon with great trepidation. Mainly, because I was in the process of growing my hair out from a (REALLY) bad cut that I had received a few months before (not at the Yves Durif Salon), and it had just now, finally, started to look OK. So the last thing I really needed or wanted, was another cut. But I had wanted to try this salon after having had an amazing manicure/pedicure from Emily, & as I was only in NYC for a few days, it was now or never. But I had no idea what I was even going to ask for. I didn’t want my hair any shorter, I didn’t really want to change the style & I certainly didn’t want anything drastic done by someone new. (I was going to be THAT dreaded client - totally impossible!) So what was I even doing there? It did not bode well for a happy outcome. That was how I walked into the Yves Durif Salon. This was how I walked out: with one of the best cuts of my Life. Yves knew exactly what to do, he tweaked the style & shape, giving me a whole new, better look, without seemingly, having done anything at all. To say that I walked out happy, would be an understatement. And not only that (as if that weren’t enough?!) I had just spent the last hour+ talking with one of the loveliest ppl I had ever met (Yves). We discussed everything from travel to family to Buddhism. Lots of deep things in such a short time, all while he performed magic on my hair. It is a bit pricey, but at the end of the day, worth every penny & I can see myself going back for (hopefully) many years to come. Oh, and the coffee is great too. It doesn’t get much...
