Had reservations made for our anniversary, wanted so much to stay in an old hotel and not a franchise one. When we first arrived thinking we will go to the cozy little bar and have a drink before we went upstairs to unpack, —sat there for some time—no one addressed us that the bar was close, until finally a someone came up to us and told us the bar was closed. Once up stairs and in the process of unpacking. Thought —oh my what did we get into—- Horrible. All the good reviews I had been seeing—- we must of gotten the rotten egg one! The toilet paper roll was way in the back that hung up the wall in back of the toilet—Bumped my arm on the end of the sink every time I reached for some. When ready to take my shower and pulled back the curtain saw there was a missing water knob to the tub/shower-so could not turn on the water,—- thought ok for 2 nights we’d wash at the sink, —-no hot water. During the night the air condition was so loud we were not able to sleep. We decided to use the fan above the bed, My husband got up went looking to pull the chain, that was so short even a giant could not have reached it., He then pulled over the desk chair that was on wheels and I held it against the bed in order so it would not move and he’d fall (((very dangerous))) finally got the fan turned on. My husband also noticed the toilet was never fastened to the floor — thankful we didn’t see any leaks while there. Yes someone did tell us they would be up to address these negative issues once we made them known to housekeeping —-but that was not negotiable —-all that should of been tended to before they rented out that particular room. How could a hotel rent a room with No knob to turn on water in the tub — then on top NO hot water. The chain on the fan in the room, was dangerously too short to turn on. —Later when coming back to the hotel the the elevator was not working had to get the firemen back twice to fix it -mean while I had to walk the steps being in my 80’s with a bad hip was not what I thought I should be doing. When we were leaving I gave the receptionist a listing the problems we had while staying there, had asked her to see the manger saw it. with no response decided to write one again this time sending it in the mail. Again regarding the poor condition of the room—with no answer as of yet. I’m sure they at the time would of offered us another room, but we were there and all unpacked and settled in —why move if they would of just been aware of the problems before even renting the room, We can not give this Hotel a good review, —-our anniversary of 62 yrs was a big time disappointment. what a shame, when looking so forward to being there on our...
Read moreCLEAN, COMFY, SAFE Seriously couldn't love this place more! It's almost 100 yrs old, has been beautifully renovated but kept it's charm. Most rooms have an exposed brick wall, the tile is original, it's gorgeous subway tile. It takes the hot water a few long minutes to get to you, but it's hot and LOTS of it. The beds are divine, the pillows comfy, the sheets are soft yet crisp, the towels thick and plush. Each room has a table, microwave, refrigerator, big tv, ceiling fan and window AC unit. It's truly like stepping back in time with modern day comforts. Be aware there's only 1 elevator, but you're on vacation, don't be in such a hurry! I'll take old restored elegance over being just a reservation number any day. I checked in at 2am, the night guy was taking care of something, cuz, ya know, that's his job, I only waited about 3 minutes. I was in 3 separate rooms. They are still in the process of renovating so the 1st didn't have curtains, I wanted to sleep in so the uber-polite kid at front desk moved me to another SPOTLESSLY clean room. I was pulling a valuable car to sell at Mecum. The awesome Naomi (manager) offered to move me to a room overlooking the street where I parked. (So nice!) Room # 2 was SPOTLESSLY CLEAN too! Walking the hall I faintly heard some music or a tv, but inside, my room was blissfully quiet. No street noise either. Had a delicious lunch right across the street, fluffiest pancake and a terrific club sandwich. I ordered pizza & pasta from A Touch Of Basil. Delivery was fast and so delicious I couldn't wait to have leftovers! The alfredo sauce was fresh, creamy with the right amount of garlic, the pizza perfection, the salad crisp and fresh with homemade Italian dressing. I dream of that meal Parking's a breeze. I have a 3/4 ton truck and was easily able to park in the lot or right on the street. The hotel smells scrumptious. Smoking used to be allowed, plus it's almost 100 yrs old. As a former smoker I can smell even faint smoke a mile away, and I smelled nothing but clean and a sweet subtle intoxicating aroma that permeates the hotel. If you want 5-star, sometimes I do too, then they are around, but if you want safe, clean, comfortable, with a STAFF that GOES ABOVE and BEYOND to make your stay enjoyable, STAY HERE. Naomi, Denise, the night guy, all so friendly, go the extra mile and beyond! I'll be back in January and plan to stay a week. I CAN'T WAIT...
Read moreSome places are called haunted because troubled spirits roam the halls. Other places are called haunted because they’re dirty spots with staff unwilling to clean. After staying one of a two night reservation, I can affirm: there are no spirits roaming the halls of the Hunter Arms Hotel. Unfortunately the only troubled souls in the place belong to the folks who don’t know what they’re getting into and pre-payed the room. Checking in, I was shocked to find the front desk staff not wearing a mask. My room had yet to be cleaned by the time I checked in. Another indication that the staff have no regard for COVID-19 protocols (or they failed to clean the room during the 24-hour waiting period). Also note the lack of any notice requiring guests to wear masks (or encourage hand washing / sanitation) so, just understand, COVID-19 is killing thousands of people a day, but somehow doesn’t exist in this place. There were flies buzzing around the halls. Which fit the scenery as the rooms looked over the back alley of the local bars. One nice feature was the lack of any need for a wake up call as the crashing of glass bottles in the fragrant trash cans below would no doubt wake the dead. Luckily, the smell of wet tobacco and some hipster-scented attempt to cover it up were offensive enough to keep my kind of the smell. The TV in my room was large, but never worked. I sent a message about it to the staff through my app and never received a reply. (But watch how quickly this, and every other negative review, gets a response!) It’s not that cool of a spot. The bar never opened (but I didn’t stay over a weekend so, might have just missed it) and for all the hype it gavel itself for being “haunted,” there was surprisingly little fanfare made about ghosts or haunting within the building. If you’re thinking about staying here because of the ghosts - skip it. If you’re thinking this might be a good spot for the parks - don’t bother. You’ll spend half your stay driving past literally thousands of better situated, cleaner rooms with far better amenities. If you’re looking for a boutique price but a motel-quality stay, please check your priorities. You deserve...
