Specifically booked a room that was NOT a micro king but received one anyway and paid the regular king price. No room for a regular sized suitcase, carry-on, and handbag except piled on the floor next to the bed. I was climbing over luggage every time I needed to get out of the bed, because the bed was literally the only space you can occupy in the room, unless you are in the bathroom. I had luggage piled from the edge of the bed nearly to the door. The sink had the poorest lighting I have ever seen in any hotel. I had to use my cell phone's flashlight to put on makeup. The room was so tiny I felt like Harry Potter living under the stairs.
After checking in, I tried to nap but there was extremely loud scraping from the next floor up (the bar?) that sounded like moving furniture for about 3-4 hours. Even after the furniture moving stopped, there was constant noise due to the location of the room, which jutted out into the hallway and was close to the elevator. One wall of the room was on the other side of a dead end hallway where people would go to have loud cell phone conversations in their search for a decent signal. This was about two feet away from my head while I was sleeping and the walls are thin enough I could follow entire conversations.
Luckily, I had my door blocker engaged when a maid tried to open my door without knocking while I was not dressed. I also had a do not disturb hanging on my doorknob. Had the door blocker not been engaged, it would have opened onto the main hallway, including the elevator area, as the door points straight down the hall, not at the wall as many rooms do. After I dressed, I talked to another maid about it, and she was properly horrified, and explained that she had a new maid who didn't read/speak English very well and didn't understand the do not disturb sign. She apologized every time she saw me for the rest of the trip.
I had two laptops with me for work/school reasons and the room safe was not large enough for one laptop so I was unable to use it. Like the room itself, the safe was the smallest I had ever seen in a hotel. Maybe large enough for a tablet? I did not feel my belongings were safe lying around in the room, especially after the maid tried to barge into my room while the do not disturb was displayed.
The positives, while not many, were the amazing location, right on the main strip, and the staff, who were polite, pleasant, and helpful. The sparkling water provided was nice. Overall, this might have been ok if I had booked the micro king on purpose to save money. But I had paid extra for the regular king. I also checked out a day early because I was miserable in my Harry Potter room. I was unsuccessful in getting any refund or reduction to the...
Read moreI wrote the following concerns to the hotel, but got no response.||||The woman at the desk was super friendly and when I expressed concern about being given a first floor room (noise), she assured me the best rooms were on the first floor and that we had a great room. We approached the door to our hallway and saw that it did not require a key to enter, which gave us pause. Salem was packed with people and many were coming in and out of the hotel to go to The Roof. I'm very surprised that more security is not in place, especially when you see the city is using enormous flood lights at night to deter crime. ||||The room. My husband and I have stayed in a lot of amazing boutique hotels. Hotel Salem is hands down the most expensive room we've ever booked and it is also hands down the worst room we've ever booked. Dorm room came to our minds. ||The huge vaulted ceiling allowed us to hear not only our own voices echoing, but also amplified the noises in the room above us where a couple was fighting. ||The lighting choices throughout the hotel were a mystery to me, but the dim/cold/shadowy light in our room was oppressive and uncomfortable. I've never experienced a light that is less comforting the dimmer it gets. We also couldn't open the curtains because hundreds of people and tour groups were directly outside our window.||The exit sign that glowed 24/7 inside our room was especially gross - it was like sleeping in a hallway or something. ||We walked around the outside of the hotel to where our balcony was located and encountered a homeless man who was high as a kite and shouting at us. Right by our room. Needless to say, we kept all shades firmly drawn and didn't leave anything of value in the room.||The carpet was dirty and obviously old so I kept my shoes on the entire time.||The walls were scuffed badly all the way around the room and patch jobs were super obvious because the paint color didn't match. Similarly, the fixtures in the bathroom had paint all over them...because care couldn't be taken to either clean it off or remove the hardware before painting? ||No hooks for towels next to the shower where there was plenty of wall space for them.||We typically sleep in as long as possible before checkout, but we woke up and couldn't wait to leave.||We went to The Roof for dinner and had to take the elevator which was putrid. Not only was the floor so stained it was sticky, every surface was smeared or had handprints on it. The smell was so foul I had to cover my nose with my sleeve. ||||Hotel Salem was not quite on par with Motel 6. Lack of care in maintenance, absence of beauty in design, shabby. I'm just so heartbroken we spent so much money on it when we could have...
Read moreI am beyond thrilled to share our phenomenal experience with The Hotel Salem for our wedding on July 11, 2024. From start to finish, our special day was nothing short of magical, and it's all thanks to this exceptional venue and its fantastic team!
The mid-century modern décor throughout the venue provided a stunning backdrop for our celebration, and the attention to detail was evident in every corner. From the modern lighting, design and elements with sleek lines of the lobby, to the nod to a speakeasy feel in the cellar, the venue was a no-brainer for our art deco inspired wedding. The coup glasses for our cocktails were a lovely touch that added an elegant flair to our reception.
A tip of the hat to the incomparable Olivia Keefe, whose dedication and enthusiasm truly made our wedding vision come to life. We cannot thank her enough for all she did behind the scenes. Olivia worked tirelessly with us for over a year, ensuring every detail was meticulously planned and executed. Her ability to not only see our vision, but to troubleshoot concerns that never even occurred to us make her premier in the wedding league. Every recommendation for vendors was top notch. Her passion for her work and her genuine care for us made the entire process smooth and enjoyable. We are endlessly grateful for her expertise and support.
The food was another highlight of our day—absolutely phenomenal! From the delectable offerings during the cocktail hour: the raw bar, Mediterranean board, arancini, etc...to the mouthwatering dishes of salmon and steak served at dinner, every bite was a delight. Our guests spoke about the food and meals throughout the summer, elevating the event to such a memorable one.
Every single staff member of this hotel was warm, accommodating, professional, with top notch service. I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Zack, who was instrumental in making sure everything ran seamlessly. His help with guest check-ins and his creative touch in decorating the venue ensured that every detail was just right.
Our wedding at The Hotel Salem was more than we could have ever hoped for, and we owe it all to the outstanding team and the beautiful venue. If you’re looking for a place that combines historic charm with modern elegance, look no further. The Hotel Salem will make your wedding dreams a reality!
