I visited this hostel in November 2019 on a solo trip to San Diego. I'd previously only stayed in one hostel prior to this so my comparison is limited, but overall this experience exceeded my expectations. The location is steps away from the beach. Complimentary breakfast is served from 7-11a each day. I met some awesome people here and made some great memories! The staff and fellow hostellers are so welcoming and friendly! There are lots of activities for free or small fee, such as competitive games of beer pong & flippy cup on the back patio, bonfires, bbqs, a bar crawl, a hike up Cowles mountain, free shuttles to prime destinations such as La Jolla, the zoo, balboa park, pacific beach, ocean beach, a coastal bike ride with the group. My favorite activities would be Balboa Park, Cowles Mountain hike, and the coastal bike ride. There are quiet hours that begin at 11. If you don't like noise until then, you may not like this place. It's a fun, party atmosphere most evenings with a majority 20s-30s crowd. I didn't mind it at all. I can sleep through anything but I had an older female in my room who was not happy about the noise and it was only 6pm. They do provide towels but no wash cloths, so I would recommend bringing your own if you use wash clothes.
I stayed in a 6 person female dorm with a bathroom. There were about 8 girls I got to meet who were in and out. We all got along so well! I accidentally locked my keys in the cubby provided, and staff had to break the lock. I didn't go purchase another lock because I was never worried about my belongings getting stolen, which is definitely a plus when staying in a hostel. The bathroom was very small. There are two other private bathroom on the second floor that I took advantage of, which are bigger than the bathrooms in the room. The only minor downside I had was the lack of mirrors. The mirrors in the room and bathrooms were almost too tall for me to see, and I never saw one full body mirror in the whole place. Hope I looked decent while I was there! Lol. In the grand scheme of things, not a huge deal ~ but I would recommend a full length mirror in each of the rooms! Enjoyed my stay & I can't wait to...
Read moreWonderful place. Highly recommend. Found them on Airbnb. They are in a nice area with lots to do nearby. The beach is literally a couple of blocks away. Many good restaurants and shops also in the vicinity. The public bus stop is right on the corner which makes easy access to other parts of the city and also to and from the airport. The place is clean and comfortable. The staff are very nice and helpful. I arrived earlier than expected and they allowed me to store my luggage in a secure area until proper check in, which I was also allowed to use on my day of departure. They also allowed me to use the lounge area etc as well in the meantime. The rooms are well kept and clean, as well the restrooms and other areas. The lounge area is comfortable and spacious. The porch is also nice to sit out on. The establishment is smoke/vape free except for designated areas which I like very much. Each bed in the bunk beds have a shelf built on inside that includes a led light, and some usb plug ins, very practical. The kitchen which is setup for common use is also nice. They have a wonderful farmers market literally right outside their door twice a week. The devil is in the details with this place because they’ve thought of the little things which count such as blankets for the couch, beach towels to use and so forth. In the mornings they provide breakfast snacks and beverages. My only small issue would be that they have couple of coolers to store your items and a spot to where common food can be left for anyone to use. There were some items left that I was using and a particular staff member who took them for herself. In fact there was Nutella like spread left and I was about to use it when she proceeded to tell me that the person rechecked in and grabbed the spread and place it on the shelf but as as soon as I was leaving the kitchen she grabbed it and went and placed in the employee area. Not really a big issue but the food was left for everyone to use and kind of defeats the purpose for a single person to take it for themselves. Above all still return and would...
Read moreI had no expectations as I had never been to a hostel before. Let me just tell you, I stayed here for nine days and it was one of the best experiences and some of the best memories of my life. I shared a room with five other females. I met people from Australia, Germany, Ireland, Africa, and the UK. I'm still friends with many of them. First of all, the actual facility is super clean. The staff cleans every day. They have a ton of meals, tours, and get-togethers that you can participate in. It's just blocks from the beach and right in the middle of Wednesday's farmers market. There's shopping, live music, great restaurants, and bars all up and down Newport Avenue (which the hostel is located on). It's also right across the street from a great grocery store--basically it couldn't be better placed. They have vending machines and a full kitchen if you need to store food. Their honor system in the kitchen is pretty on point. I would say that some things could go missing from the kitchen after a Friday night, but the rest of the time you're golden. I had no issues with my roomies. There's a free breakfast offered every morning, new building codes provided every night so its safe. The staff were amazing. All of them. Cassidy, Ailbhe, Oklahoma Rob, Alyssa,.. Everyone. They went out of their way to make me feel at home, had great suggestions, and hung out like we had always been friends. It really made all the difference. There is a lot of deck activity in the evening (possible noise if your room is deck side) but there were strict quiet hours from 11pm to 6am while I was there. However, laughter and bonfires at night are a sound I associate with San Diego beaches-I was never bothered by the noise (if there was any). I've been visiting San Diego every year for 25 years, and I used to live in OB. This hostel reflects the spirit of OB. I just loved staying at this place. I feel like other hostels have a lot to live up to after this experience! I recently heard that the Hostel is permanently closed as a result of the pandemic...I sure hope that ends up...
