Solid hotel! Comfortable stay in SF for a good price. Comfy bed, nice staff, everything was pretty nice.
Gym is awesome for a hotel gym. Although some things on the peloton were kind of breaking (foot strap, water bottle holder thing) and it was very well used, the gym overall was super well equipped with lots of options. Water and towels were provided. I loved that the center atrium doors opened, nothing better than working out with a lovely breeze coming through. Had nice music that wasn’t too loud so I could still be in my pace in my headphones.
One thing that was slightly weird was the main windows were like, sliding balcony doors with a key in them. I opened them and stepped outside and all of the rooms were connected by this path. I’ll include pictures in the review. It made me feel slightly unsafe as a single woman in town for business. I wish I could have slept with a window open but I was very vigilant in keeping those locked.
I wish there was a bench or something for me to put my stuff at the foot of my bed, but otherwise loved the room and was very comfortable.
No room service right now. I went down to the bar for a bite to eat as on the website it says they have burgers and small bar food. I go down and they let me know that the menu is incorrect and they only have like drinks and chips. Was super disappointed as I was there on business, got in late, and the had to figure out food. The restaurant on-site was incredibly expensive. No snacks like kind bars or nuts or anything in the room either, and the coffee machine didn’t work. Just prepare to figure out food or snacks for the room. And again, because I was by myself I was a little nervous about just wandering around the neighborhood pretty late at night.
Now that that’s out of the way, the front desk staff was super nice and helpful! The doormen were AWESOME and offered to call a cab for me every time, very nice and helpful. Everything was clean, the lobby was super cute and had a bunch of different chill spaces. If you needed a spot to work it was easy to come by, and if you needed some quiet there was some space downstairs near the gym with long tables and was more quiet.
Cute art, cute spaces throughout the hotel, the courtyard areas were so nice to have a space to chill in a garden in the city. They had OK coffee available for free by the bar in the mornings which was sweet. Neighborhood was cute with lots of Japanese food. Lots of grandpas walking around doing their daily routines, felt very safe in the daytime. Really close to Fillmore which was awesome. Slower pace than when I stayed in Nob Hill which was also refreshing. I wouldn’t go walking around by yourself at night but streets were clean and I never felt unsafe. Harder to walk around to all of the central stuff compared to closer-in, but super easy to get an Uber. There was a parking lot with a covered area where your Uber could come get you which was actually super useful. Easy check in and easy check out. Lovely stay. I’d stay here again! I think I’d prefer a different hotel if I come back for business, but with my partner on a weekend trip would be...
Read moreA GREAT STAY WITH A REMARKABLE STAFF.
To be clear: I ALMOST GAVE FIVE STARS. My SLIGHT mark down was merely because the room w as a little plain-Jane and I didn’t like how they make the bed. That may be personal taste, and didn’t ruin the experience, but it was just shy I of perfect.
My number one with hotels? Cleanliness. And Kabuki seemed pristine. Indeed the cleaning staff themselves were friendly and seemed very on top of their work. Five stars for cleanliness.
The staff at the desk was brilliant. Patient and informative and ALWAYS greeting with a smile and friendliness. I felt hosted, and it was nice.
I was on a working stay, and the common spaces were ideal. It was big enough to find a nook yet still a vibrant enough space that you enjoyed being in the lobby. This lobby is HUGE, and the variety of places to sit will please any taste. From lounging to upright seating at tables, I spent LOTS of time in the common spaces and actually enjoyed them. The endless tea (and coffee) made it very special, and in less Covid-strict times their cocktail bar looked well equipped.
I especially loved the patio. Serene without being sleepy, it was a quiet oasis. (I a write by hand and loved sitting in the sun writing.) You get visited by honeybees (who are not the stinging kind, don’t worry) and there are happy coy swimming in the pond, so overall it was a favorite space for me.
The gym was EXCELLENT for a hotel gym. I am a long time weightlifter, and while the equipment was obviously not for the super-strong, it was certainly excellent compared to most hotel gyms. If a weightlifter can find good training, it’s a good gym. With boxing, cardio, and a terrific little studio space, it was awesome to have it on premises.
Now, about those sheets . . .
The Hotel Kabuki has a strange way of making beds. They do not have fitted sheets over the mattress; they just use flat sheets. And the sheet they use is not quite big enough to fit over the mattress. So in the night, if you turn too much, you end up inadvertently tugging up the lower sheet and quickly end up on a bare mattress.
Now, like I said, the place seems super clean so I didn’t get skeeved or grossed out, but it was kind of an annoyance. I’ve stayed in hotels that don't use fitted sheets yet the sheets over the mattress, and usually they use are at least big enough to cover the mattress and not “untuck” in the night. This weird bedding choice was what kept it from five stars; which is a shame because it is SUCH an easily-fixed glitch.
I LOVE Japantown, and this hotel fits nicely into the small area. Being right next to the quaint Peace Pagoda Park was a delight, and meanwhile there are LOTS of great restaurants all around the hotel. I ate something different every meal – from quick take out to sit down dining, I was never more than a ten minute walk tot he next treat! Plus a supermarket five minutes away on foot – PERFECT for longer stays. (My room had a fridge.)
I would stay here again in a heartbeat....
Read moreThis place definitely was an experience! We booked a king bed room with a city view and ended up on the top floor. The view was amazing! The room was clean but felt cluttered by frills. The honor bar and mini bar were expensive considering the availability of these items within walking distance of the hotel. Water bottles and sleep aids for sale on the night stand. I suppose it's convenient for someone who wants to pay up for it. Wish the mini fridge had space for my food and drinks. The complimentary WiFi wasn't strong enough for us to stream Netflix and we didn't want to pay $7 for the high speed access to find out if it'll work either. I'm assuming a big hotel with a lot of professionals staying at it has a lot of people tying up the bandwidth. I specifically booked this to have an out of this world experience. They advertise the spa and complementary bathhouse but do not tell you in advance that the spa is actually only open to women/men/coed on specific days nor did the clerk offer/mention it while checking in. I did however enjoy the extra deep soaking tub in our room. My husband wasn't fond of the super short shower head though. I booked this hotel knowing I was going to be eating out in the area so I did not partake in the $17 continental breakfast offered by the restaurant in the lobby. It seemed extremely expensive for the offerings it had. For our stay we used the valet parking for $50($41+tax). This was a first for us so it was pretty weird to have someone park our car in a spot we drove by in the entrance. We were coming and going a lot so it would've been nice to have the option to just have a reserved parking space instead of the whole valet thing. It felt especially weird when they insist on getting your car when it's maybe 15 steps away. The staff operating the valet through the day were very nice and courteous though. I think we saw 4 different people operating the valet in one day. A conference was being held in the meeting rooms during our stay and we didn't feel welcome to look around the hotel. The building and facilities have a lot of artwork and nice Japanese features to look at. The ambience is enjoyable. This hotel is a great location and really a reasonable price for the area and amenities. Enjoyed walking around the Japan mall beside it and going to Benkyodo for...
