The homeless people surrounding the area are MORE FRIENDLY then the hostel stuff. If I could I will send CONTROL to forse them clean. I arrived around noon. I ring the 2 bells but nobody answer. I call the phone number on the banner outside-nobody pick up. I went to the website and call the number-no answer. I went on my reservation and call from there-No answer! I sit outside the door. After some time a boy walk out-I ask if there is someone-he said yes and let me inn. The receptionist Indian girl with thick accent. She invited me to sit and wait! The check inn was at 3 pm! She charge me for the stay. Requested me 20$ for the 🔑! Around 2.30 pm the so called receptionist invited me to check IN. I requested to be near a window. She CLAIMED THE MAIN ROOM'S HAD NO WINDOWS!!! She give me a key and said ok GO! Room 208. 6 beds. THERE is a window facing toward a muddy whole. There is a lady advising me to lock after myself even if I go to the restrooms. Common area's.. The common spase is almost non existing. There is a kitchen on the main floor that has 6 chairs around the kitchen table- the table itself sticky/dirty. There is few chairs on the small side areas always full. Few big trashy bags around make everything even more miserable. Not friendly environment. The 2nd floor had a trash bag on the ground-which make me recognize it's "my" floor. No trash in the room and no small light's. There is a roof top where in the corridor is small bench-dude was sleeping there. The roof is full of trash and not really even spot to sit. Showers/toilet. The toilet is small w shower cabin inside. Very untidy. There is a dirty spots inside the showers. The sings seam never wiped-extremely DIRTY. The toilets itself extremely dirty. There is a toilet on the 3rd floor that stink terribly. I went to shower. The water never get really worm. .. When you step into the showers is slippery-because is that dirty. There is a cartoon to keep the water out of so called shower- that is too small..on it you can admire hair and brownish grease spots. I was looking for a plastic bag-the cleaning lady in the kitchen open few extremely dirty closet saying we don't have. I said:"is ok I see the conditions!" The conditions are miserable. Today someone was 🚬 marijuana inside the room It stink. Older lady snoring constantly bug me tell me what to do-lock the room when you go to the restrooms.. The entire thing is MISERABLE. Stuff-0*!! They are RUDE-watching movies behind desk. The kitchen-extremely dirty. The toilets and showers are miserable. The corridors to the rooms stink terribly. Everything is sticky and NASTY. It is JUST offal! I don't know how this please get 6.7 🌟 on hostelworld! Probably they pay for ratings. I book Yesturday and I paid for flexible cancellation-which the receptionist told me I can't cancel flexibly-because is valid ONLY 48h BEFORE I check IN!! But I Purchise it like 4 hours before I made the reservation!!! Just SHAMEFUL! So I can't cancel they ALREADY charged me SO I am obligated to stay!!!

The European Hostel is a budget place, so crowdedness and noise are to be expected. The house is located in a convenient spot in the city, however it's close to the food bank etc. so many homeless people are living right there. We stayed for three nights. On our first night I helped our host Nick to calm down an aggressive guest who let in people from the street and threatened and insulted me and him. So the overall security is not great - neither outside nor inside the hostel. The level of dirt is beyond anything a budget place should offer paying guests though. I am an experienced traveller and haven't seen the like in budget places in Yemen or Sri Lanka. Accordingly, I should have moved out right away, but stayed the full length I booked. The last night I got more than 300 bug bites all over my body. While Nick easily accepted the fact, I was not allowed to talk to the owner to make sure they're getting health and safety in. I got one night refund - a ridiculous compensation for the inflicted injuries. I've filed with the SF Department of Health - hopefully other travellers won't have the same experience.

Hopper advertised "parking available". I showed up to be told to go pay $30 for parking, after I already paid for a toll bridge to get here. That would've made it more expensive than a normal hotel! No way I was doing that! While not angry with the owner at the time, I called Hopper to explain that their services weren't as advertised to get a refund. Was just notified that from contact with the owner, Hopper was unable to refund me. Seeing reviews about how defensive the owner gets, when I certainly sensed he was angry with me, I now am upset with him for my hardships. I have included a picture of the Hopper screen, just so it's seen that "parking available" is advertised. I understand that this isn't what you tell Expedia and something was just lost between them and Hopper, but it's unacceptable for me to not be refunded over this. I am contacting my bank at this point.

It's very disappointing to say the manager ( I believe his name is Nick ) is the rudest, most discriminative person I've ever met in my life! This is my first and last time staying here! When I first arrived with my suitcase and backpack, he looked me up and down like he was disgusted by the fact I even exist. ( Keep in mind there's nothing about my appearance that would signify that. I'm a very clean person. ) There's a lot of homeless people on the street here and most of them are black. When he saw that I myself am also black it's like something inside him snapped. He started immediately yelling at me and refused to let me in for 5 minutes. When he finally did, I gave him my government issued ID and he tried to act like it was fake and started interrogating me, but his machine showed him it was real. He gave me a very nasty look before he gave it back to me. This was my first impression of him. If someone else entered the room he would be all smiles and like a whole different person, but as soon as they left he was back to how he was. He tried to immediately over-charge me, but after I brought up the prices I saw online he stopped. Each day I've been here, he keeps threatening me and yelling at me. As of the moment I'm writing this, this is my third day here and I have two more. About 10 minutes ago I went downstairs to tell him that I need a new blanket, because the one he gave and said was washed had all kinds of people's hair and crumb looking things on it. ( I don't have blonde or long brown hair, so I know it's not mine ) It irritated my skin to the point I can't even go 30 seconds without itching like crazy and every time I used it and tried to sleep it felt like I was getting bit up all over my body. I went to the office to let him know and he starts yelling at me again louder and louder after seeing I'm obviously upset. He threatened to kick me out immediately and starts taking about how he has permission from the city to have this building and they wash/ do pest control every month and I don't have the right to do an investigation, they do. Keep in mind all I wanted was a new blanket. The carpet on the floors are turning BLACK from all the dirt, the bathrooms are FILTHY with no toilet paper. There's always water and mystery liquid on the floors. The rooms are so stuffy I can barely breathe. Whenever I exit the building to go to work I end up coughing up so much dust and mucus just from being here. When I wake up in the mornings it takes so much to even be able to breathe comfortably. Even with the windows opened it doesn't make a difference. After the way he treated me today I had to call him out that he's been extremely rude to me since before I even walked in the door when I first got here. He thinks he can treat anybody any kind of way. I usually don't match people's energies and try to move on with grace, but I had to call him out. Sometimes one can only endure so much. I've seen him treat other people this way too during my stay. No offense but the only time I've seen him not treat people like this was when there was a white lady or a white guy in his office. I don't know why he feels so bold to do all of this on camera consistently. Keep in mind all I wanted was a different,...

Money grubbing owners. If I could give it an across the board negative negative review, I would.

My husband and I checked in with no problem, paid our 20 deposit in cash having already paid for 2 nights on hotels.com. two exceptional young guests (omigod I sound like an old granny) helped us up to the third floor as I pack too much, and the Hostel has no elevator.

I met up w my sister who happened to be in the not-so-nice neighborhood. I brought her to our room to rest before heading home. She was there late, 2am (night owls we are) we were very quiet, compared to the high pitched female laughter coming from the hall. But, it's a hostel, it's to be expected. No big deal .

She left after I walked her out, and went to sleep. 💤

9am the next morning POUND POUND POUND. No visitors, the owners say you have to leave, um, NOW.

Shoot, total misunderstanding. So sorry, would never ever had done that if I knew.

Nope.

we had to pack up and leave. Extremely humiliating. We are a middle aged couple, who are experiencing a difficult housing situation; by no fault of our own.

We are also on a fixed low income, or we would have booked a fancier spot, as it is the cheapest rooms in sf run 48- plus 16% tax.

I asked for our deposit and that nights room cost.

Nope. Huh, really? Seemed fishy, I get the deposit. I willingly ate that, it was my bad that I didn't research or ask enough questions.

I was told to get it back from hotels.com. who also (when I called later) absolutely — because of my misbehavior!?;?— would not refund anything, AFTER they called the Hostel.

We walked out and were accosted by a patron, almost physically, called my husband "Brody" and really got in our physical space (hey mannnn personal bubble) —so much for discretion—after he insulted us he mentioned that some folk live there...hmmm... and we had caused a serious breech. By my 54 yo sister.? Who almost walks with a cane, who feels absolutely terrible. Who (out of respect for the venue) I walked out.

I reiterate, if I knew no visitors were permitted I would never had broken that rule. I have booked rooms all over sf, Oakland and Berkeley. I'm not an idiot.

BTW I looked on hotels.com, there is/was zero mention of no visitors (I'm sure it will be changed now), and the lovely young woman (no not facetious) who checked us in said nothing.

Ps. The young man who wouldn't refund anything threw the owners right under the bus, and I get he is not responsible for no refund. BUT he also had no discretion, and that is bad customer service.

I am disputing this whole cluster-cuss with my bank.

All that aside:

Lord, I really feel like a granny with all of the young man this young woman that...but just because I...
