I don't even know where to begin but I will start with the property itself. We had never been to a bed and breakfast before, so our only mental guide was stories shared by others and from tv shows and movies. This beautiful Victorian era house, built in approximately 1889, nestled in this tranquil town near the end of Main Street at the corner of Church street in downtown Smithfield VA, catches your eye from the color and architecture alone. There is a garden blooming fresh vegetables at the rear of the property with a mural of flowers painted on the garage/shed doors adjacent to the house and garden. ||||With ample parking behind the building, there is entry access at the rear of the house, which makes you feel at home and not as if you are entering a stuffy business, as well as access via the front doors. Once you enter, you can almost feel yourself hopping into a time machine of nostalgia. The house on the inside looks museum-ish, but is definitely worthy of perusal. ||||The caretaker resides down in the basement and, while pets are present, they reside in the basement area and are do not share access to the main B&B common areas or sleeping quarters. There is a gorgeous dining room with plenty of room to accommodate a large booking. The setting is romantic there are plenty of books and antique items to take you away from 21st century technology so that you can focus on reconnecting with loved ones, however, not to worry. There are televisions and wifi if you are really insistent on those ‘necessities’. ||||There is a formal sitting room, a sun room to have coffee/tea, etc. The second level boasts a large bedroom perfect for a couple and a secondary large adjoining bedroom or sitting room. The third level has 2 additional bedrooms that are perfect for a family trip if you to bring other family or friends along. There is a microwave, a nicer than average dorm sized freezer/refrigerator combo on the 2nd floor to store drinks and food. ||||The master suite bed is quite comfortable given it is well over 100 years old. The air condition is supplemented with several fans but if you don’t like heat, the unit is strong enough to keep you in the 70 degree range. ||||Staff/Service: ||||There is ONE person at the B&B who takes care of everything!! Dawn Riddle, has been the caretaker of the establishment for approximately 16 years. She is very friendly, accommodating and goes above and beyond to make sure you have the amenities you desire and to make you feel like you are in your own home. Our breakfast was spectacular! A delicious omelet which had the quality and texture of a gourmet quiche, and even more amazing and tasty French toast. Both were beautifully garnished and served with a bowl of mixed fruit, orange juice and sparkling non alcoholic juice. There are menu choices and she is very conscientious about checking for food allergies or aversions to certain foods. Her personalized service went above and beyond. I had a flower delivery from an outside vendor that did not show up as planned and Dawn, knowing the weekend was a romantic getaway, hand-picked and arranged a beautiful bouquet of flowers to fix a problem not caused by the B&B in any way. ||||Price/Value: ||||After tax, $150 for an evening and the high level service we received was worth every penny and better than any hotel you could have stayed at for basically the same price. ||||I would give our overall experience 8 stars on a scale of 1-5.. I really cannot find anything about our experience that would keep me from coming back again and again for years to come. ||||There is plenty of fun to do around town and Dawn will fill you...
Read moreFor my wedding in July, we had many out of town guests to accommodate and we found this beautiful old home to be a better deal than placing everyone in hotel rooms in some impersonal hotel. We rented the entire home, so instead of running as a bed and breakfast, it was more of a house rental - which was perfect for our needs. We were happy to have everyone under one roof, so that they could better get to know one another, and enjoy feeling "at home." I started to worry that the home would feel cramped or small, but on arriving I was pleasantly surprised that the rooms are much bigger than they appear on the website. The camera used to photograph the interior spaces does not do it justice. They are large, comfortable rooms with large beds, not stunted like their website seems to indicate. I will upload photos when I get a chance because it really was a beautiful place and somewhere I would recommend you if you want to enjoy a relaxing visit to Smithfield, or even a special...
Read moreBeautiful old home packed with antiques and amazing architecture inside and out. Rooms are well appointed and AC keeps the temperature comfortable, private bath, tv, all of the creature comforts. Breakfast was superb and our host Kristen is very sweet and accommodating, answering all of our questions and just awesome overall! We were hoping for another haunted adventure but this place is not! Lol. What it is is a gorgeous turn of the century home that feels like home, we love it!! If you get a chance go to Betty’s (the owner) antique shop next door, wow!! We had a great weekend so far and really just love this place, the town of Smithfield is very quaint and has lots to offer someone looking to slow down and enjoy a small town weekend getaway, highly recommended and we...
