We stopped and ate here on a Saturday night pause in Vicksburg on our roadtrip. I called to see if Anchuca could seat the four of us, and they could. This is a bed and breakfast in a historic inn set in the historic section of central Vickburg. It was a short drive from the Best Western where we had to stay because we were traveling with a dog. If we'd been able to book at the Anchuca, I would have now that I've seen it because it is a very charming property, with very sweet people working there. Anyway: their food is delicious. It really is. The seafood gumbo is one of the best I've ever had, and we go to New Orleans every few years or so just to get our fill of favorites like Mr. B's Bistro and Atchafalaya. Their paneed catfish with creole sauce was amazing. Their shrimp and grits was very good. My husband liked his beef filet but I figured that is something you can get anywhere, so... One of us ordered the chicken piccatta which was fine, but my family recipe is a better one. I bet the pork chop is great. Good rolls. Meh wine list. It is your mega producer Kendall Jackson type stuff, which does do the job. Even though the Anchuca is charming, my heart sank at first as we came in and were seated because the only other party there at that early dinner hour were disrespectful of the niceness of the place enough to be wearing clothes even McD's would give them the stink eye for (leggings with plumber peek-a-boo situations), and had kids who were popping up and down in their seats with some whining even though they were old enough to hold it down with more style. But that was really no biggie, southern hospitality means you keep it polite and make guests comfortable. And despite the disrespect of the other diners, Anchuca is actually special. Their chef is making very delicious, high quality food worthy of a special occasion. I'd be happy to dine there again, and the next time I would get a bowl instead of a cup of that...
Read moreFrequently journeying between Texas and Georgia, I'm always looking for safe, comfortable and service oriented accommodations. Imagine finding this treasure! This historic B&B embodies beauty, heritage, and refinement. Vicksburg, like all Southern cities, has its contradictions and paradoxes. But this place balances the history and redemption of so many of Mississippi's homes. On arrival, I was greeted with curtious and warm hellos. The restaurant has classic and unique selections. Pimento cheese grits for the win! Staying in the pet friendly carriage house, I was able to enjoy the restoration of a Southern treasure with modern conveniences. The bed was comfortable with luxurious linens. (One of the best nights of sleep I've had in a while) There is a pool in the back courtyard for the warm Mississippi weather. And don't forget to enjoy coffee and tea in the cozy library. The breakfast of fresh fruit, quiche , bacon and biscuits was accompanied by a telling of the home's unique past and preservation. The coffee with a touch of cinnamon was perfect. We were then given the opportunity to tour the place and soak in the grandeur of the architecture, rich rooms with gorgeous furniture, and see the stunning grounds. This will definitely be a place for many future stays. Located less than 10 minutes off of I-20, it's convenient, comfortable, safe and provides award winning dining. Try some of the unique custom flavored macaroons from the owner, art in itself. Thank you, Anchuca for a new favorite dwelling for this weary traveler and her fur babies....
Read moreThis is a long delayed travel review. My wife and I visited Anchuca over 10 years ago and I promised that I would write a review. How about that for procrastination. The thing that kept nagging me was that I had a wonderful time, yet I had never fulfilled my promise. To start with, when we arrived we had rented one of the large rooms on the 2nd floor along with a separate room for our then teenage son. The owners let us know that we would be the only ones there that weekend, so we had the run of the house. After we had toured Vicksburg during the day, we returned to an absolutely fantastic meal. The owners were outstanding host and cooks. Later on my son went to his room to listen to music and talk to friends. We decided to go downstairs and check out the den. Almost everything was period specific including the baby grand piano. My wife is an excellent piano player, so I relaxed in one of the super comfortable chairs while she played tunes on the piano. As I was relaxing and my mind was drifting, I almost felt as if I was back in time. What a wonderful thing.... then a sound from this century rang out. My teenage daughter, who had stayed at home to attend some school functions, reached out to me from another century to disturb my peace. The mood was broken, but the experience has lingered with me. The next morning we experienced a wonderful breakfast. I really can't think of a better experience at a bed and breakfast. It was amazing. You really need to...
