I want so bad to give this place 5 stars but there’s just so many reasons I can’t. First the good stuff. Whoever answers the phone (a guy and a lady) are so polite and kind and I feel like if they were there in person maybe the whole stay would have been better. Their outdoor pool is great for a late night swim after a long hot day (it was honestly the best thing about the stay) and unfortunately that’s as far as the good stuff goes 😭 we stayed in the green suite and unfortunately all the beds are pretty firm and you can’t turn the air down past 72 degree which the combination makes for a rough night 😅 While loading our bags in the car to leave the young gentleman there stopped me at the door and gestured me to kiss him on the cheek I immediately got a pit in my stomach as I realized with all the up and down of packing up my 10 year old daughter had not been by my side the whole time. This made me very uneasy but we still wanted to stay for this amazing breakfast I heard about on all the reviews! The presentation of breakfast is amazing five star presentation but again unfortunately we just couldn’t stomach it. 2 of the 6 people with us tried it and didn’t get past a bite. I asked my brother in law his opinion and he said the fruit was good. The lady who serves the breakfast speaks nice but comes off cold and not welcoming maybe it was just to us. We didn’t stay for the tour.
We did travel with 3 kids and 3 adults and I’m thinking maybe this place is perfect for older adults (seniors) and maybe they would have a good time and maybe that’s where all the great reviews are coming from but for a youngish family with kids just the kiss gesture alone was enough for me to not want to stay again or...
Read moreWe planned a last minute culinary trip to Vicksburg, and didn't realize the dates coincided with the Ms. Mississippi pageant, so everything was booked up, including our first choice, the Anchuca Mansion (our plan was to eat brunch at Anchuca, so that's why it was our first choice). But we found a room just a block away at the Duff Green Mansion, and I am glad that we did. We had a very pleasant (and surprisingly affordable) stay in the Pembrant room, and enjoyed a quiet late-afternoon dip in the courtyard pool, and a pleasant morning coffee among the treetops on the third floor balcony. High praise to concierge, Tonya, who was warmly attentive throughout our stay.
To be sure, this is an old house, and it does show its age in some places, which, to me, is part of the charm when staying in a historic property. But if you're more accustomed to modern hotels, I'd advise keeping an open mind about just what it takes to keep-up a nearly 200-year-old home.
We did end up eating off-site (at Anchuca) the next morning because we had non-refundable brunch reservations, so I can't comment on the Duff Green breakfast offering at this time, but the dining room decor and table-settings were immaculate, so we've decided to return later this year for that experience.
My only advice to management would be to provide insect repellant spray at the pool area, because the citronella torches that were provided were just not enough to keep the summer mosquitoes at bay.
I generally do not return to a property I've stayed at before, rather preferring a new experience on each trip. But I will return to Duff Green, and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys staying at historic...
Read moreOn the upside, it is a very convenient location in downtown Vicksburg and has a lot of history behind it. Some really impressive rooms to explore on tour. I had high expectations for the bedrooms and general area, but it is a very old home still in need of some serious repairs I think. We were shown to our room and told if we wanted to tip the housekeeping there was an envelope to do so, and a phone number for the man who is "in charge" if we have any issues. This room was avg. as far as housekeeping goes. We called the number left when we had a water issue, but the mailbox was full. I did reach the proprietor and she told me that the manager man was away on vacation and there is an issue requiring us to run the hot water for a very long time to get it warm. After about 15 mins. it did get warm. The walls are very thin so if people are talking out in the general area (it has couches, books, etc.) you can hear every word.||The "mini-bar" type area is outside of the rooms and contained a very old, sea foam green dirty Keurig type coffee machine and mis-matched cups beside dirty cups in the sink. We skipped it and went to a coffee shop downtown. We opted not to stay for the breakfast. We did explore the house a bit on our own - stairs are VERY steep as in most old homes of this age.||The balconies are rotting on the edges in a way that made me feel a bit nervous about standing on them, but the view from upstairs balconies is nice.||All in all - I think if they addressed the issues mentioned and if we had been told ahead of time about the water it would have been a...
