My stay at the Magnuson Hotel Virginia Beach on July 12–13, 2025, was deeply unsatisfactory due to multiple issues that made my experience uncomfortable and stressful. Upon arrival, I encountered unprofessional behavior from a front desk staff member, who displayed a lack of hospitality and spoke in a condescending tone. Her demeanor was unwelcoming, making me feel disrespected as a guest. Communication was also challenging due to her accent and abrupt manner, which further diminished the check-in experience. The room itself was in poor condition. Trash was left outside my door, contributing to an unclean environment. The room had a strong odor of marijuana, which was particularly concerning as it was designated as a non-smoking room. The bed was uncomfortable, making it nearly impossible to sleep. Additionally, there was no in-room phone to contact the front desk for assistance, forcing me to walk across the property for any requests, which was highly inconvenient. The advertised “free WiFi” was non-functional. Despite the room description claiming reliable internet, the WiFi did not work at all, preventing me from completing important work on my laptop. This was a significant inconvenience and a misrepresentation of the hotel’s amenities. My sleep was further disrupted by excessive noise. At approximately 3:00 AM, other guests were loudly talking and laughing in the hallways, startling me awake and causing concern for my safety. Additionally, at around 5:00 AM, a guest repeatedly honked their car horn, further disturbing my rest. These disturbances, combined with the uncomfortable bed, made it impossible to get adequate sleep. The overall lack of cleanliness, poor customer service, non-functional amenities, and disruptive environment made this stay unacceptable. I urge management to address these issues by improving staff training, ensuring proper room maintenance, enforcing quiet hours, and verifying that advertised amenities like WiFi are operational. I would not recommend this hotel to others and will not return.

Never left a review before but this place was absolutely disgusting. We booked a room through their website for the night of 8/3/24. The hotel itself and our room looked nothing at all like the pictures. The outside of the rooms are littered with garbage, beer bottles, old food, etc. The entire place was very sketchy and not at all what they advertise on the website. The inside of our room had not been cleaned at all, used soap and trash in the shower, hair and mildew in the sink, and literal cigarette ashes in the toilet (this was supposed to be a “no smoking” room). Room also reeked of cigarettes. There were also no blankets on the bed, just sheets?? And hand prints on the bed board. We left immediately and found a room at a nearby Hilton for almost the exact same price. The employee at the front told us to contact a supervisor regarding the state of our room and a refund. We call the next day and the employee who answered said that her “inspector” found nothing wrong with the room, and that they “took pictures”. Not sure what they took pictures of but when I told her about the pictures I had of the things listed above, she hung up. This only showed us that their idea of “clean” is extremely concerning. PLEASE look at this places reviews before booking here. The website is VERY misleading. (photos of the website picture and pictures from the actual room are attached)

Just checked in so can't say anything about the breakfast yet but... The first room we got was non-smoking and once we came in it reeked of cigarettes and the beds felt like concrete. Tried the call the front desk but the phone was broken. Went to the front desk and they gave me a room on a different floor. The new room didn't smell and beds were soft but I couldn't call the front desk because there was NO PHONE lol Only 2 small towels for 3 people. This is just a FEW bad things that happened in the short amount of time we've been here. The pool is not as advertised and there are many questionable characters around the parking lot. +++ +++ Edited to add: we went to breakfast and there wasn't much to eat, tried to make a waffle but was screamed at and told it was only on the weekends(it's friday). Breakfast was a HUGE disappointment. Housekeeping opened my door without knocking and when I told them I had the "do not disturb" sign up, she looked surprised to see me and said she didn't know anyone was staying in this room. What the heck!! This is only a few bad things, stay as far away from this hotel as you can! But I guess I shouldn't be complaining since I only paid $70 a night but it sucks. Some of the front desk people were nice, though.

Stay Far Away!! This hotel was a complete filthy roach infested dump and NOTHING like the pictures online. The rooms were nasty, dirty and hadn’t been cleaned ever, it seemed. Roaches everywhere! The air conditioning unit was infested with roaches too. Old filthy furniture, heavily dirty carpet that’s never been vacuumed or shampooed, and thin bed throws (no comforters). Not to mention the beds had sand all in between the sheets and that thin bed throw, which tells you housekeeping staff either doesn’t exists or should be fired! There were cigarette holes in all the bed throws. The beds were full size, maybe even twin; but definitely not Queen like advertised. And they were noisy and hard as a brick! My husband was given a hard time when he asked for additional rags and towels. After he proved we were guests there, the lady at the front said she had to be certain she wasn’t give them to “random people off the streets”. There were holes in the walls from incomplete drywall repairs, especially where the tv was “supposed” to be mounted. The tv wasn’t working so we called and “maintenance” arrived to assist. He claimed there was a fire at the hotel and they were going through renovations, but listen, this place was just a money grab sleezy trashy neglected mess! The ice maker was broken and the outside trash cans were full with trash and had trash on the ground beside them. The tub had cigarette burns all on it and the terrible repairs to the fiberglass tub/shower enclosure was chipping. I was unable to adjust the faucet to allow a tub bath because the faucet was broken so we could only take showers. There was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. The toilet was unusually powerful during flushing! The walls were dirty and dingy in the entire hotel room. The thin molding was peeling back from the bottom of the walls where the roaches enjoyed the adhesive! Sketchy people outside roaming the parking lot and looking into guests’ vehicles. I didn’t sleep a wink and didn’t keep ANYTHING on the floor. I was up all night killing roaches!! Take my advice and pay the extra money to stay at a quality chain hotel that takes pride in the accommodations they provide to their guests and the cleanliness and safety of their property. We’ve contacted corporate twice with no response or resolution! We will be filing a complaint with the health department! Lesson learned, my family and I will NEVER stay some place like this...

DON'T ever stay here. This is the worst place that you could ever stay and especially the worst place to place your family. Due to a botched hotel reservation by a popular internet booking service earlier this month, I was forced to find another hotel for a night. This part will be the only part of the story that was decent - Upon arriving, the staff was friendly, easy to communicate with and front desk service was good. Welp, that's the end of the "Pros" . Immediately after walking out, the sense of watching your back comes in full force. As you make your way to your room, regardless of driving or walking, you are followed by eyes of many people with the "Sketchy" vibe. That awkward feeling you get when stared at in a way that is certainly not polite, but down right creepy, multiplied by 100. You look for the safest place to park your car while knowing all these people are watching where you park and which room you are going to. I want to make a note that this is in no way being dramatized or exaggerated. Many people use this particular hotel as residence as 4-5 people squeeze into their 1 bed room. So you could guess the possible struggles, activities and desperation of some. All part of the information you uncover during your stay as you start researching this place once you get settled in. I read stories of people being robbed at gun point, knife point, cars broken into along with stolen and damaged vehicles. Occasionally even by the many wild and down right disrespectful children running around unsupervised that I witnessed for myself. Experiencing these troubled kids (6-14 years old) first hand as they ask people they have never met for money and cigarettes. While the outside environment of the hotel is dangerous enough to stay far, far away from this place, the room condition is nothing better to expect. My room, a 1 bed, non smoking. Where to begin? Smell of mildew, a stale and humid feeling inside, dirty microwave, damaged door lock (Go figure, right?), dirty bathtub, a loud and rattling AC unit, NO Smoke Detector... Um, Hi? May I speak to OSHA? Anyways... As I could continue this One-Sided list of Pros/Cons, I think I have made my point clear enough. Based on my experience and others as well, this is NOT a safe place to stay. Certainly not a place to bring your family, or yourself. Visitors seem to be viewed as "outsiders" or worst, targets. Lesson learned for future travels. Best of luck to everyone else...

I definitely should have read the reviews and hope you do too. I ended up leaving after one night. This place was gross. Not I am not bougey or anything, I came from the hood, and my family has been homeless before, but this place was too ghetto for me. Right out of the gate I knew it was going to be bad. Just past the reception desk a dead roach was on the floor as I made my way to my room. Bad omen. Since I was not familiar with the layout, and there were 2 stairwells leading up to my room I picked the one closest since I walk with a cane. Big mistake. Apparently the way leading up to that stairwell is poorly lit and used as a bathroom and the smell of urine was awful. A huge fresh urine trail stained the wall to my right as I just tried to hurry to the stairs. I didn't want to touch the railing, but hair no choice and at the top of the stairs I was greeted by a used condom and a fire damaged ceiling that extended almost all the way to my room. Yikes. Garbage bags were sitting outside rooms on the path to my own room. Residents opened the door to get a look at me as I passed by before quickly closing the door again which was sketch. Once in the room I thoroughly washed my hands, but was completely grossed out. Room did not smell very pleasant and the bathroom looked dirty with stains all over the bathtub. The fridge was dirty so I definitely wasn't putting food in there. The bed had no blanket or comforter, just a sheet which has a cigarette burn in it! I have literally never encountered that even in the cheapest hotels I've stayed in. The sofa chair was hard and uncomfortable. The night tables were filthy and I didn't want to touch them. The phone was also grimt and missing buttons. The desk had no desk chair(what the heck?!) so it was useless for me to work at. The bed was super uncomfortable and I slept maybe 4 hours. I was supposed to stay another night, but decided to check out in the morning due to how skeeved out I felt. Didn't want to bother arguing with anyone and just went to Holiday inn which was way better. You definitely get what you pay for and I ended up wasting money on a night I didn't use because I just wanted to get the hell out of there....
