From the outside, the place doesn't look terrible. It actually looks kind of cool, you can tell it's very old. From the inside it's the same, probably from around 1920-1940. The first thing you'll notice is no lobby, followed by you getting a fancy key pocket that looks like it was created by a 2 year old. (See photos). Next you get to ride on the adventure of your life! You step into an elevator that has two sliding doors with very heavy springs that you have to hold open to prevent someone from accidentally getting beheaded or perhaps from losing a leg. Once you're in the elevator that can hold either 1 fat person or 2 regular people (from both size and weight restrictions), you arrive at your floor. (If it doesn't break, it broke down after we got out and stayed that way for a few days). After fighting the sliding elevator doors or doom once more and making it to your room, you find that your key doesn't work so you have to repeat the process. (Except using the stairs this time). Once your key is working you make your way into your room, where more than likely 2-3 hookers have died within the past 50 years and their souls still inhabit and haunt the building. Upon inspection of the room we found that the covers were freshly laced with hairs from previous guests (that we're probably murdered). After finding that all 3 layers of the bed was coated in hairs, we moved to the bathroom, this is where the fun began. The washclothes had hairs in them.. The towels had hairs in them, and the floor was covered in pubes. After finally getting it all cleaned ourselves, we went to sleep, wondering if we'd be the next ones to be murdered for our hairs to stuff the pillows for the next guests. Finally, the sun came up, we had survived, and if it weren't for the jackhammer alarm clock, who knows?! We may have slept in until 8!! Overall I give this place 2/5. It would get a 1 except the value helped seeing as all other hotels in the area are 300+/night.

I had seen this place once before when I first visited DC several months ago. It is right across the street from The Church of the Pilgrims, which boldly declares that all are welcome (always refreshing to see). The place is a tavern in the old sense of the word, a local watering hole in the basement, with rooms for rent in the upper floors. In the case of the Baron Hotel, they have a restaurant/bar which doubles as a comedy club at night (i.e., the Bier Baron Tavern and the DC Comedy Loft ). The comedic offerings when I was visiting were not particularly great, but good enough. There were some excellent choices later in the month though according to their calendar and I wish I were staying longer. The tavern has got an excellent selection of beers, and as speciality beers appear to be the wave, this is your place if you are a beer lover. The hotel itself is the kind of place where words like quaint, respectable and old-fashioned leap immediately to mind. The building is relatively old and when you enter you hear all the creeks and groans of a building that is long past its heyday making efforts to withstand the ravages of the modern era. However, the rooms are serviceable, the beds comfortable, and the showers hot. I have nothing to complain about because it was a decent price relative to all the other hotels in walking distance of DuPont Circle. The only issue I had was with the poor internet service. In this day and age, a robust internet connection is an essential utility, and unfortunately, this place struggles with that. You can't even identify which of the numerous networks to connect to in the hotel speak nothing of connection speeds. Also, there was a shortage of electrical outlets; you never seem to need these things until you do when you find yourself crawling on the floor looking at the baseboard trying to find an outlet. Great stay overall. I would stay here again should the opportunity arise.f

Okay. Honesty here. Stayed here because it was the cheapest option for a decent location for extra nights after a work trip. Was concerned there might not even be toilets in each room (glad I was wrong). Moderate regrets but mostly fine. 1. Service at the desk is highly variable. First woman early in the day was helpful, stored my luggage for a while because I was too early. Younger woman in the evening...rude and not particularly helpful. At least she showed me how the elevator worked, but she literally pointed me at an "employees only" closet and told me I could get my luggage. Bags were in there with brooms and extra chairs etc, completely unsecured. 2. Elevator is sketchy as hell, tiny, and aggravating. Manual door = 2 manual doors, one that's spring loaded and has to be held open while you exit/enter. The other is the bloody WALL of the other floor! Which you have to open and close, and the last 10 in or so are misaligned and blocked by the wall! See photos. Also, me and my bags barely fit in. Hallways are narrow and convoluted. 3. The room is adequately mediocre. Not attractive, but generally clean and comfortable. Air conditioning is a window unit. Lighting is BS, overhead is very dim, lamp didn't have a shade so...yeah. Tiny standing wardrobe might have HPotter gremlins or similar. Based on photos in other reviews they are HIGHLY VARIABLE and I got a mediocre one. 4. Wi-Fi is quite slow. Secondary latch on door is broken. No clue if TV works. Minimal ameneties besides bar and restraunt downstairs. View was a brick wall over an alley. 5. Pretty good location for touristy locations, with walking/bike/scooter/metro. 6. Shower was fine once the water got hot, which took a few min. Nothing crazy though.

If you are searching online for Washington for hotels, and you see that Bier Baron has pretty reasonable rates compared to other hotels in the neighbourhood, there is very specific reason for that. And it's that the rates are in line with the quality of the hotel and the amenities.

The experience begins as soon as you climb the stairs and open the wooden door entrance. It's housed in a rickety building that also accommodates a bar/restaurant and a comedy club. The carpet that covers the floor is in a desperate need of renovation. The foyer (or whatever you may call) is dark and damp. There is a creeky and rickety stairs that leads up to the hotel rooms. I was tired and luckily, the hotel had an elevator. But then I realised, that it is still an old-world elevator, where the door needs to be opened and closed manually.

If the appearance of hotel lobby and corridors is not enough to dampen your spirit, the rooms will. The rooms are dark and damp and tiny. I still regret that I forgot to bring my flip-flops, as god knows what resides in those unvacuumed carpets of the room. The rooms are tiny with hardly any space to manoeuvre, once you have two beds, a writing table and a side table. There is no closet for your clothes, just a rod with couple of beaten up hangers. In case you are looking for an electrical outlet to charge your phone or tablet, there is a power strip lying on floor where you can hook up your phone. I wonder how ESA allows to have a hotel use power strip, as it's a hazard to have a strip lying on carpeted floor.

You have to have a petite figure to fit in the bed. Should you happen to be a tall person (6 feet) or have an ample figure, the beds are not for you. I was sharing a two-bed room with my friend, and my friend ended up having a bad back by sleeping on the bed. Once you lie in the bed, there is hardly any space to move around in the bed. Worse, I was able to step directly into the washroom from my bed - there is hardly any space in the room

The WiFi is slow and will not allow streaming - good luck if you plan to play games or stream movie/TV show on your tablet. The TV is small and has basic channels.

The washroom is aso a marvel by itself. No cupboard or closets or shelves to put your toiletries. Just a basin, where you have to wait ages to get some hot water. Same with shower cubicle - wait for five minutes to get hot water and then struggle throughout the shower to get the correct water temperature. The washroom has a sliding door, that does not close completely and has one of the noisiest exhaust fan. You will end up waking up your companion if you happen to wake up in the night to use the washroom.

The room does not have a coffee machine. You have to walk down the stairs to the front desk to get coffee. The room key stopped working after single use, and i had to get them demagnetised, everytime I used them

The walls are thin and the sound permeates across the rooms. The noise from the comedy club and restaurant downstairs just adds to your woes.

In short, do yourself a favour, and try to book a better hotel in the neighbourhood, if you can afford. This was one of the worst experience I had of my stay...

Okay. First, let me say that I'm a middle class Brazilian, so I've stayed in some pretty crappy rooms, and this one definitely makes the list. But I'll start with the positives regardless.||Pros: |- The location. It's a very short walk from the stunning Dupont Circle and it's metro station, and there are several bus stops nearby, as well as many restaurants, pubs and coffee shops (which is great given that there's no breakfast). The area surrounding the hotel is gorgeous. Reserve a few hours to just walk around and sight-see, if you can.|- The hallways are really pretty!||Cons:|Everything else. But let's break things down:|- Absurd $150 deposit that's just nonsensical considering the rooms offered. I've read on another review that you could thrash the place entirely and it wouldn't justify the deposit's value and I agree: there were literally 5 pieces of furniture in the room (TV included) and all were in very poor quality.|- The room was just sad, man. The chair was ripped and had stuffing spilling out, the bedsheets were ripped as well, the room had a weird smell, and there were no outlets anywhere - we had to use a multi-outlet extension cord on the ground.|- The carpet. Whether it was just very, very old, stained and worn down or absolutely filthy I will never know, as I didn't dare to find out. Bring a pair of flip flops. You've been warned.|- There's no bathtub and the shower area is really tiny and dark - I kept hitting my elbows and stuff on the walls while showering, and I'm an average sized woman.|- This hotel is not accessible! Keep that in mind if you plan on bringing strollers, wheelchairs or more luggage than you can carry on your back. There's a rickety elevator (I've seen people gushing over it for being "vintage" and it is. But it's also very poorly maintained) that's way too small, so you'll probably need to/end up taking the stairs. You also need to go up a flight to get into the hotel.|- No breakfast offered or in-room coffee machine (there's one in the lobby, whether it works or not I do not know). The pub downstairs is more expensive than the ones outside the hotel, so just take a walk and eat somewhere else.||TL,DR: Just stay at The Baron if you absolutely cannot afford...

negative stars if i could but i'm putting 5 so it will actually be read by people who should know. I booked a room here a week prior to visiting for the weekend. I payed in advance through Expedia and showed up there after a 12 hour drive to wait around for an hour with no one at the desk while no one spoke to me double parked because in the Expedia ad they said there was available parking in addition to that they failed to mention the outstanding $150 deposit at check-in and lack of internet or cable which was fine a little ridiculous but it should have been listed on Expedia just for the guy to enter my credit card info in wrong twice, and stood there like a deer in headlights when i said i didn't have another card for him to mess decline with incompetence. It was After bank hours so I couldn't call and fix it took another hour for the fraud notification to hit my email which i found out he simply failed to ask what my zip code was. I ended up having to double book at another place where they actually had parking, and chip reader so, it wen't through instantly without human error, a $50 deposit, and a guy actually working at the counter unlike the baron hotel which is appropriately named I might add, but the last minute booking brought a single room for a day up-to about $400 on a weekend where everyone else was fully booked. regardless I have been trying to get a refund from them for over a week now through Expedia but since the guy who works at the baron hotel doesn't stay at the counter or apparently answer the phone or return phone calls it looks like I will just have to live with $700 worth of hotel booking for one weekend and just expect to never get a return for my reservation. I ended up missing the wedding I drove 12 hours to get to and I would suggest people stay away from this place they are highly unprofessional and I found out I was insured up-to the day of the reservation and I feel like they do this to people all month just charge for reservations and leave no one at the desk so when you get there you can't get a refund and they get paid for nothing. negative stars but like I said I want people to see...
